Vampiress’s Revenge
Prologue
I was born into a world of flowing ball gowns and strapping tuxedos. Where we fought with swords and old fashioned pistols. Men and women rode in horse and buggy instead of the social status car.
Ouí, this was France in the eighteenth century. We lived simply for the pleasure and the thrill to party.
It was to be a night to remember. The royal family was hosting a masquerade. Their first annual masquerade. It was to comemberate the day my brother was engaged to his fiancé. I was in my room fixing up my hair in the mirror.
My reflexion held the image of a twenty-one year old woman. She had light green iris with almond shaped eyes. Brown, waist-length, curly hair was bunched up in a high curly bun. My womanly features, high cheek bones and a prominent chin, were lightly dusted with powder and blush. I pursed my ruby lips and grinned at my reflexion and it grinned back.
I turned at a knock on the door. I called for them to come in. I watched as my childhood playmate walked in and bent forward in a bow. I inclined my head to him and told him to shut the door.
This was Alderen. I greeted him with a smile and swiftly walked towards him in my white ball gown with white bead work. He embraced me in his arms and once again I was safe. He pressed his lips against mine and then held me for what seemed to be an eternity.
We parted and I stood back to take a looked at him. He wore the royal family's guard uniform. It was black and tight fitting. It buttoned up on the left side, but the right was a mirrored reflexion. His black hair was neatly bound back. And his dark chocolate eyes held a deep happiness. He was now my official bodyguard.
I showed how happy I was for him by stealing another kiss. I walked back to the mirror and checked myself. I must admit I was slightly nervous.
"You look beautiful, Amilyia, Mon Amor. No need to be afraid. You'll do fine." Alderen whispered against my neck.
I turned and thanked him. I jumped slightly as a plump service woman bustled in. She was a wonderfully, spirited woman. She wore a long, black dress wish a white apron that ties in the back. Her light brown hair was drawn back in a long braid.
She stopped in the door frame with a bright smile that extended to her bright blue eyes. "Good evening, dear." She moved in to straighten Alderen's uniform and then tend to the ties of my gown.
Alderen excused himself and shut the door behind him, but I knew he was standing outside the door, waiting. He's going to be good at what he does.
I hate these new corsets. How does anyone expect me to breathe in this? I stayed quiet, though. It's not lady-like to complain unless they have good reason to.
"So, Sir Alderen is your new bodyguard as of today." It was a statement not a question.
"Yes. I feel honored to have him as that." I said, watching her in the mirror. Her fingers worked quickly and her blue eyes held concentration.
"What do your parents thing?" She asked.
"They are the ones who appointed him. They had done that because we've known each other since we were young. They have that reason to trust him." I said.
"And," She started slowly. "Do they know?" She asked in a demanding tone.
I hesitated. "No." I sighed. She was referring to my secret relationship with Alderen.
Me being a princess is a horrible position. Our marriages are set up by our parents, even if we hate the person. We are not allowed to be with the one we love. If caught we will be tried and then punished. Depending on the parents, some of them are put to death.
"Your parents haven't picked a suitor, have they?" She asked. Her French was soft and motherly.
"Not yet. They still think I'm too young." I replied.
Any normal person would find this absurd. I was over a hundred. My brother was over two-hundred. That was the right age to find a suitor and marry.
She finished up and moved away to make sure everything was in place. She then walked over and picked up a small box. She pulled out a gold locket my mother had given me for my hundredth birthday.
She put it on me and turned me around. She smiled brightly like a mother on her daughter's wedding day.
"You look perfect." She said.
"Thank you." I leaned down and kissed her cheek. I smiled down at her.
She placed a hand on my cheek. Her blue eyes started to water a little. I stood there watching her for a bit.
"Oh...Nana!" I threw my arms around her and embraced her tightly.
She pulled away and smiled. "I'm sorry, dear. I shouldn't be crying. It's just you look so beautiful in this dress. I can only imagine what you'd look when it's your turn to get engaged and married."
I smiled and a small blood tear slid silently down my cheek. My nana picked up the hem of her apron and dabbed at my eyes and cheek. She fixed up my make-up and smiled again.
"Come on, dear. You don't want to be late for your brother's party." She said and led me to the door.
I turned the roman brass handle and walked out. Just as I suspected, Alderen was waiting for me.
He gave me his arm and I slipped my arm through his. He walked me down the vast hallway and down to the second floor. We reached the door of the cavernous ball room and waited to be announced.
The doors swung open and a deep voice rang out above the heads of the others. "Now entering, Mam'zelle Amilyia and her newly appointed bodyguard Monsieur Alderen!" We walked down the stairs. My head tilted skyward in the charade of regal air. How I loathe to do this.
Aunts and Uncles. Grandparents and cousins. Even people from other countries whom I’ve never met before, turned and clapped respectfully.
Alderen and I smiled and nodded at people we caught eyes with or with those who congratulated Alderen for becoming a bodyguard and me for having him.
Alderen pulled the chair out for me and I sat down beside my parents. Alderen sat beside me.
My mother touched my shoulder and I leaned towards her. She whispered in my ear. "Many great and powerful men have come here to ask your hand in marriage." She said. Her voice was like honey. Unlike my father's who's voice sounds like a bear. It was deep and raspy.
I only smiled and nodded, but once I looked straight ahead at the others, my face turned into an impenerateble mask. I rested my hands in my lap.
I felt a hand slip on top of mine. I looked at Alderen and he leaned forward. I moved towards him and he said,”Don't worry. I'll speak to your father."
I sighed lightly and nodded. I turned back to stare glassy-eyed at the people dancing. I didn't even realize that someone was trying to speak to me.
"Mam'zelle Amilyia?" Someone questioned on my mother's side.
I looked up and met the green eyes of a young man in a dark forest green coat and trousers. I moved back a bit to get a good look at him. He had a young baby face with brown hair. When He smiled brightly he showed perfect teeth.
"Ouí?" I asked.
"Can I have the honor of a dance?" He asked. HIs voice sounded young as well. Deep but not so deep.
I glanced at my mother and she nodded. I looked back at him and took his waiting hand.
I looked back at Alderen and I could see his eyes averted and his cheeks a tinge of red. I sighed quietly as I was dragged to the floor.
As we danced, he talked pretty much about himself. I learned his name was Jon and he came from the eastern side of France. His family is a long line of very famous vampires. Unlike him I was a direct descendent of Dracula.
I tuned him out a bit after that because I knew he was only talking about himself and family to impress me. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Alderen walking around with his hands behind his back. He was keeping an eye on me. He had a sour look on his face. I knew he was touching the dagger in the back of his pants, thinking of things he'd like to do to Jon.
A pang of guilt went through my chest, but it was over rode by the sound of Jon's voice coming close to my ear and neck. I could feel his breath against my neck.
I jerked away from him and he stared at me in confusion. My eyes narrowed.
"What are you doing?" I asked angrily.
"Y-you were showing your neck. I thought you were giving me an invitation." He said. He was nervous at first, but his voice became more authoritive.
A voice sounded behind me and I sighed with relief. "Is everything alright, Mam’zelle?" Alderen said.
I turned. "Yes. Monsieur Jon was just leaving." I said, darkly and turned to glare at Jon.
Jon bowed and turned to walked off to his family's table. H bent down to hear what his mother had to say and he shook his head. I glared again and turned to Alderen and we walked back to the table.
I sat down and placed my head in my hand. My mother touched my shoulder and I shut my eyes.
"Not having fun, dear?" She asked.
"Not really. All these suitors ware pitiful. They only seek to impress me with their family history." I said.
"Don't worry. You'll find someone." She said.
I opened my mouth to say something, but I was interrupted by my brother tapping a glass. The red liquid swished around.
I closed my eyes in annoyance and waited impatiently for my brother's speech. I pretty much tuned him out. His voice was just like as deep as my father's.
My eyes flicked open and looked around. Everyone's attention was focused on my brother, but I couldn't help feeling that I was being watched. And then I felt a wave of anger and hatred course through my body. After that horrid images of death and gore flooded my mind.
I felt a hand touch my shoulder on my right side. I quickly looked at Alderen and he had a looked of concern on his face. He leaned towards me.
"Are you alright?" He whispered.
Before I could tell him a loud bang could be heard. My brother stopped speaking and everyone started to look around.
The sound of glass shattering and the thud of a cannon ball hitting the floor ripped through the ball room.
Many people got to their feet, including Alderen and I. He moved close to me, getting ready to move.
A loud crash from behind made us jump. We spun around and the doors of the ball room splintered off its hinges. Slayers from the town flooded in.
My father yelled for the guards to move in and I felt an arm around my waist. I was lifted off the ground and thrown over Alderen's shoulder. He slammed his fist against the wall and a secret door opened up. My family and I were rushed in.
My family's bodyguards followed in and shut the door. The other royals had their own methods of escape. We ran into a small room with five onyx black coffins.
Alderen set me down and pulled open the lid. He grabbed me and put me inside. I was too stunned to refuse. My parent, my brother and his fiancé were placed in the rest of them.
I could hear noises coming down the corridor. Someone shouted something I couldn't register.
Then the worst of it happened. A few of the slayers had followed and were now trying to enter through the coffin room's doors.
They rammed the doors and two managed to get in. Right before my eyes they snapped their crossbows and two stakes went through my parent's chests. Their faces contorting in pain and finally their ashes crumbled to the floor.
I stared in shock, but one aimed at me. Alderen closed the coffin door and I felt it fall through a shute. The ride felt like it went on forever.
Finally, it stopped. A gas like vapor sprayed around me. I screamed for Alderen and scratched at the lid. Soon my screams became inaudible whispers as my body started to shut itself down for a long slumber.
Before my eyes closed, I swore to myself that once I woke up that I, Amilyia Lotys Hawkins, would hunt down the descendents of slayers and any slayer that got in my way.
Chapter One
The air flowed in and I choked on the dust that was thick on my body and the bottom of my coffin. I stared up at the scratch marks on the inside of the lid and wondered how I was going to get free. The memory of the night my parent’s death still haunted me as if it was yesterday.
As I lay there, I took the moment to learn more about my surroundings. The air in the ground smelled like decaying flesh. I assumed that I was in a graveyard. How I got there I wouldn’t know till later.
The advances made by humans were amazing. They had invented new technology that included the automobile and the computer. I knew I’d have to go much greater lengths to understand and learn more about this world.
Across the way from where I rested, I felt the mind of a young male. Age nineteen and had an astounding love for the music called rock.
I tapped into his mind and went through his memories to learn about this strange new world. I learned the writing style, the language English, and all the new technology. I learned everything. I soon found out that I was no longer in France, but in a city in Louisiana.
I soon found the mind of the care taker of the cemetery. I learned from him that a bunch of the coffins, including mine, were transported from France to Louisiana to make room.
I didn’t find out a year yet. He didn’t know what year it was. Something was wrong with his mind. Something called short term memory loss.
Over the next couple of weeks I learned everything I could about this new world. The people, the technology, the culture. Everything. Now it was time to get out of this tomb made of onyx. Unfortunately, I don’t think the men who made this escape route escapable. I was weak from the lack of blood I used to ingest. The thought made my stomach clench.
When I crawled out of my resting place and leaned my back on the headstone that may have been put there a long time after I was put to sleep, I thought about what I needed to do. First, I would need to feed. Then get my hands on new attire. Third, I would need to find out what time period I was in. Simple enough, I thought.
I summoned enough energy to get up and walk around. My ball gown was decomposing as I walked. Soon I was in rags. I guess feeding would have to wait.
It was dark and no one was really outside. This was good being that I wouldn’t want people to see me walking around half nude. I ran to the nearest clothing shop and broke in without tripping the alarm.
I knew stealing was against was against the law, but this was a dire emergency. There was enough light to see what was in the store and what I’d look in the clothing.
I looked around at the clothing on the racks. Most of it was black. I noticed the sign on the door said, “All Goth Store.” I had always thought that Goth and Gothic was a form of architecture. Guess I was wrong.
I picked out a few of the women’s under garments and tired to figure everything out.
I pulled off the rack a long, black skirt. It had ruffles and it looked to be layered. I tried it on and it just brushed my feet.
Now for a top. I found it odd that women would wear corsets on the outside. Normally women of my time would wear it under our dresses. I thought wearing it on the outside was better.
I picked a white corset while black vines spider webbing a crossed it with black netting. Just a little tummy showed.
That’s all right. Just as long as I can move. With centuries of practice, I tied my long, brown hair back into a braid. I stood up and it fell to the middle of my back.
I started heading towards the door. As I walked, a shooting pain entered my foot. I hopped up and down in a circle, clutching my aching foot.
Cursing under my breath I walked through the tons of shoes. I grabbed a pair of knee-high boots and pulled them on. Not bad for getting the right size in the first go.
I made sure all tags were off and I had everything I needed. Cameras weren’t good for customers these days so there wasn’t anything to worry about. I walked out and scanned the area for a poor beggar of one of my kind.
For two hours I searched the streets and alley ways for a suitable source of food and didn’t find anything. I stood in a small dark alley confused at the lack of food.
In my puzzlement and my weakened state, I didn’t notice a figure walking up behind me.
A flash of silver and an arm pinned my arms. I figured it was a man by the strong grip he had.
I felt his dirty tongue run across my neck and cheek. His cold voice whispering, “Mm…You taste good.”
A flash of what he planned to do to me flew across my mind. My laughter rang through the air.
Startled by this, his grip loosened giving me the advantage to turn around and grab his head and tilt his neck. Two sharp fangs pierced his flesh. I slowly drew blood from him. The sweet bitter taste of blood rushing into my mouth and down my throat.
It only lasted for a few minutes. Just before he died I released him and let him fall to the ground. I licked my blood stained lips and stared down at him with cold eyes.
“Thanks. So do you.” I said to his cold corpse.
As the man’s blood churned in my stomach and my powers regained their strength, I felt another being watching me. A young woman. No older than I was in appearance, but younger than me in years.
Turning quickly, I came face to face with my watcher. She smiled down at me and jumped off the roof.
She was a few inches shorter than me so she was around 5’3”. She had brownish red hair that came down to the middle of her back. It was curly and it was swept behind her at all times. He blue eyes twinkled with respect and admiration as she watched me. She wore a pair of jeans with old in the knees and a Victorian style, cream colored top. The front was ruffled. Her eyes had eyeliner and shadow. Dragons hung from her ears. She had a wide-open smile, showing teeth. But something caught my eye. She had fangs.
I looked into her blue eyes and she winked at me.
I smirked and looked at my deceased victim and then back to her.
For the first time she spoke to me. “You should burn the body. Mortals freak when they see this happen.” Was what she said.
She handed me something and I looked at it. She laughed at my puzzled face.
“It’s a lighter. Watch.” She knelt down and reached into her back pocket. She grabbed notebook and ripped a piece of paper out. She clicked the lighter and lit the paper on fire.
Laying the paper on the corpse it slowly caught fire. Fifteen minutes later we stared at the burning inferno. The stench of burning flesh and hair filled the air.
I looked at my newfound friend and she looked back.
“I’m Jiye.” She said and held out her hand. “I’ll help you if you need it.”
I looked at her and smiled. “I’m Amilyia. Your held is greatly appreciated.” I took her hand and grasped it.
Chapter two
For a week, since the day of my awakening, I had stayed in the home of my new friend. Her house was a large apartment on the top floor. Fortunately, she had a second bedroom and her brother normally slept in the living room. Now he was to move next door.
Lector was a vampire as well. In appearance he was older than Jiye, but was turned a year after her.
He had light brown hair that was not quite shoulder length and slightly curly. His cheeks were slightly hollow. He has bright green-blue eyes. Any mortal woman would kill to have him as their own. If only they knew.
Over the past week I also learned that the time period was 2020. I also had a birth certificate and driver’s license made and I took out a large fortune out of the bank for immortals. It depends on your title about how much money you get. Soon I had a black 2020 Suzuki GSX-R750 and a black Mustang sitting out front. I had my own apartment up on the top floor with Jiye and her brother. We had the top floor to ourselves.
My choice of weapon changed too. Normally I would not fight, but I learned how to use a gun. They grew to be a favorite with me. Lector got me one every year after that. A collection of bullets under my bed consisted of silver and regular bullets.
But what I don’t understand is that when someone of the royal family gets drained and they got to sleep, their most trusted warrior follows them. So far my warrior hasn’t come for me. I fear that something may have happened to him. Personally, I hoped not.
Gazing out the window, I thought of my missing-in-action warrior. He was as old as I am. Still is. My thoughts were interrupted by Lector’s singsong voice.
“Amilyia! I have new toy for you!” He sang out and walked into the room, but stopped dead at the look his sister was giving him.
“What? What’s wrong?” He asked.
Jiye glared at him, but told him that I was worrying about my warrior. Lector nodded and went into deep thought.
He did this on a regular basis. Soon enough you just get used to it. It’s funny when he suddenly does it when you’re talking to him.
“I have an idea on how to find him.” He said after a few moments of silence.
“Uh oh. He has an idea.” Jiye said sarcastically and ran to hide behind me. Lector’s ideas usually involved dangerous things.
“No really it’s not that bad. All we need is his name and where you were buried.” He said, running out the door and into his apartment. He came back with a box of stuff.
He placed the box on the table and pulled out five candles, a medium sized circle mirror, and a box of colored chalk. Jiye moved out from behind me and looked puzzled at the items. Suddenly, her face brightened and she turned to me.
“He can do magic. I forgot he could do that.” Jiye smiled and pushed over to the table. Magic in my day was considered evil.
“Don’t worry. This is good magic. Nothing bad can happen. Unless you want to use it for evil.” She said, seeing me face harden. She’s good at telling what I’m thinking by looking at my face.
I nodded and helped lector set up. He drew a series of circles and drew a few runes on the wooden table in the living room. As he drew them he told me what they meant: Seeing, Knowledge, and Physic in different colors.
After, he placed the mirror in the middle of the circles. Jiye and I sat around the table. He concentrated on my graveyard, repeating the name over and over, five times. Alderen.
A picture appeared in the mirror and we leaned forward to see it better. A man. Walking through the graveyard. Black pants. Black tight t-shirt. Muscular. His trench coat hid something behind him. I caught a glimpse of his face. Young, handsome. Early twenties, like me. Short, ear length black hair. Kind of wavy. And just like that, he was gone.
Jiye looked at her brother and then went to look at me, but I had gone.
The sound of a motorcycle being revved-up filled the night sky.
Chapter three
I sped down the street towards the graveyard. The streetlights ran across my helmet. My red leather coat fluttered slightly in the rush of air.
I skidded to a halt, almost throwing myself off. I jumped off and pulled my helmet off and headed through the archway of the graveyard.
Looking around, I tried to remember what was around him in the background. A winged angel.
Seeing the angel, I ran towards it. Running as fast as I could. Several times I almost broke my neck by tripping over a very low head stone.
The last one was really bad. I tripped and slammed into the angel. I fell over and lay on the cool grass. Licking my lips, I tasted blood. It seems that one of my fangs pierced my lip. No matter. It would heal in a few minutes.
Tasting my own blood only made me realize how hungry I was. The last time I fed was a week ago.
I rolled over and sat up. My head swam. I felt dizzy. I drew my knees up to my chest and held my head. I closed my eyes and leaned back against the cool stone. No sooner than I had leaned back, I heard footsteps.
Opening my eyes, I quickly stood up and reached behind me for my gun. A shadowy figure moved towards me.
My head swam again and I almost fainted. I gripped the angel for support. The figure zoomed in and out of sight.
The figure moved closer and spoke in a deep voice. “You took quite a knock there. Sit and rest. I won’t hurt you, my princess.”
I hadn’t been called ‘princess’ in a very long time. Doing what he said, I sat down and looked up at him. My warrior looked back with a smile on his face.
I ran my fingers through my hair and felt the warm, slightly sticky blood that poured from the gash in my head. Drawing my hand away and looking at it, my vision flickered again. I looked up at Alderen and then everything went back.
***************
I dreamed. I dreamed of the night my parents died. I saw their faces contort in pain. Saw their skin and bones turn to ash. Saw the faces of my attackers. And there, I saw my betrayer. He came closer, and closer to me. Finally, I woke.
Sure. Lector might be good looking, but have him stare at you while you are sleeping only inches from your nose. I smiled slightly, but placed my foot on his chest and kicked him back into the wall.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” I yelled, getting up.
Jiye was laughing hysterically on the floor. Lector helped himself up and rubbed his chest.
“I was only making sure you were alright. You didn’t have to kick me.” He said, pouting.
“Well, you shouldn’t be that close to my face.” I said, sitting up more. I rubbed my head and felt my lip. The bleeding had stopped and I had a small bruise on my head.
“That bump was a lot worse.” Said a voice behind me.
I started and turned around. Alderen was standing a few feet away from me leaning on the wall. I realized I was in Jiye’s apartment.
Jiye sat next to me and smiled. “He carried up over here. We heard wings outside and saw you in his arms. We thought you had died. You really did look it.”
I grinned. “Don’t I always look dead?” I chuckled slightly, but stopped at the sight of her worried face.
I sat and thought about what she said, but as I thought I felt eyes watching me. I turned and looked at Alderen and then at Jiye.
“You said you heard wings. What did you mean?” I asked and looked back at Alderen.
Jiye was about to say something, but was interrupted.
“The new technology here is amazing. I awoke a year before you did so I could learn for you. The Black Market got involved with giving people new powers.” He moved towards me as he did he took off his coat.
A span of wings stretched out behind him, white as snow. I stood up and went behind him. From where the wings were implanted, I ran my fingers from there, up and over and down to the tips.
I walked back around him and looked him in the eyes. “You can feel that?”
He nodded. “There is so much that I need to tell you. Are they allowed to hear?” He asked.
I looked at Jiye and Lector and then back at Alderen.
“Yes. They are allowed. They helped me out.” I smiled at them.
“Very well.” He told of how he had risen and what he had learned. HE had told us of how he interrogated several slayers to find out about the traitor. The betrayer. He went to the library and accessed the computer to see his family tree, but only found a less recent document. Two people were missing from it. All below them had become slayers and killed a lot of vampires. The only royal living was me. They will never stop killing until every last vampire is extinct.
I was left with a lot to think about. I stayed out on the roof, sitting against a still standing gargoyle. I didn’t even come in when it started to rain. The water was cool against me skin and dripping off everything.
Alderen came out to check on me and watch me, to make sure nothing happens to me. Just like the old days when we were young. Relationship of a princess and warrior were forbidden in the past.
Alderen’s wings seemed to glow in the dark. Not even the rain made it dark. In fact, the rain made it shine. He looked angelic. Only a few knew of the real evil of him and I was one of the few that knew.
“Please change.” I said when I finally let him know that I knew he was there.
“Why?” He asked. He always asked that. I always tell him the same answer.
“Why not?” I said, turning around and smiling at him.
He smirked and changed to his true from. His skin turned a dark, gray color. His fingers turned long and bony. Sharp nails sprouted from the tips. His fangs grew longer. And finally his eyes turned a dark blood red. With the wings he looked even better. Half vampire. Half wolf demon.
I stood up and walked quickly towards him. He embraced me in his strong, gentle arms.
“I have been so lost without you.” I whispered into his chest.
“As well as I.” Now we don’t have to live the old ways. Humans and immortals alike can love whomever they want.” He said, leaning his head on mine.
I looked up at him with tearful eyes. “I saw them. I saw them as I slept. Their pained faces haunt my mind.” I buried my head in his chest again, sobbing.
“Hush now. You will avenge them soon.” He said, hugging me closer.
“I miss them so much.” I said, calming myself down.
“I know.” He said, rubbing my back.
I felt so safe in his arms. So not alone. I didn’t want this moment to end. I wanted to stay with him forever.
Funny. I could stay with him forever. I am immortal.
Chapter four
The rain continued as we all slept and then finally at night, it was on and off down pours. Tonight I was going to hunt for slayers. No one will come with me.
It took a long time to convince Alderen not to come. As I waited for the last rays of light to fade, Alderen tried to catch me off guard and surprise me with things like, “They are more skilled than you.” He even attempted, “They smell.”
Finally, I couldn’t stand for it any more.
“The only time I would let you come or stay here and not go is for you to change me to the wall.” I said in a dangerous voice.
Alderen thought about this and said, “Does anyone have chains?”
“Alderen!” I said, looking at him in surprise.
“All right. All right. I’ll back off.” He said with a look of defeat.
“Good. I’ll see you all before day break.” I headed towards the door, but felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned and looked up in Alderen’s smiling face.
“Be careful.” He said and he kissed my forehead.
“I will.” Turning quickly to hide my blush.
“She’ll be fine. She’s a strong girl.” Jiye said, as I headed out the door.
I climbed up to the roof and opened the door. I looked around and breathed in the familiar smell of when I woke. I walked on the edge like a suicide attempter would. The only way to lure a slayer is to kill between dusk and midnight. It’s always fun to cause havoc.
I hopped and ran across the roofs to a more crowded place. About three blocks away from the apartments I stopped. I scanned the crowd for anything worthy of my taste buds.
Looking deep in their minds, I found a mortal that had just finished committing a murder. Murderers didn’t disserve to live.
Without missing a beat, I jumped down and grabbed my target. I sank my fangs into his soft flesh and drank deeply. The pulsing valve in his neck pumped the blood into my open mouth.
Women screamed as men ushered them away. I let go of my dying human as his heartbeat began to fade. I let his guilty blood drip down my chin.
Thinking that this attack didn’t work I faked to go after a young woman. Before I could even touch the girl, a gun was fired and the bullet that left it lodged itself deep into my shoulder.
I screamed out in pain and turned to my attacker. As I looked into the eyes of my attacker, the blood drained from my face and hot anger flared up in me. Not letting my anger get the best of me, I ran into the alley way and dashed around corners.
I heard footsteps behind me, which only made me run faster. I looked behind me and he was right on my tail. How the hell is he catching up to me so fast?
When I wasn’t paying attention, I took a wrong turn and ran into a dead end. I stopped short and looked for groves in the wall, but I heard him coming up fast. I turned and pressed against the wall and he slammed into me, pinning me.
When I ran, everything was going so fast, not it was dragging on. All I knew is that I wanted to rip him limb from limb. For my attacker was none other than my betrayer.
I struggled in his grip, but my arms and legs were pinned, and he was very strong.
“Stop struggling.” He hissed.
“Why should I? So you can kill and betray me like you did to my family.” I growled angrily.
“No. So I can look at you.” He said.
This startled me and it stopped me in my tracks. Staring at his face, I noticed it was unchanged. The same pit less, black eyes. Same messy, black hair. Face flawless and smooth. He stared back at me. I opened my mouth to ask a question, but he interrupted me.
“You are wondering why I’m still alive.” It wasn’t a question, but a statement. “The answer to that is your great aunt’s fault. She thought to make me suffer the immortal life, but instead I used it to wait for you.” He said in a strong French accent.
“Why? So you can kill me?” I yelled.
“Again with the killing. I don’t intend to kill you. I never did. I was going to get you before they brought you o that chamber, but your aunt grabbed me first.” He moved closer and pressed against me.
I didn’t know what to say, but the burning flames of anger flared again.
“You killed my parents. How could you? I hate you!” Everything just poured out. I started sobbing. I struggled against him and tried to get away. He held me until I tired myself out.
I bowed my head and sobbed quietly. I felt his right hand grabbed my other hand and lift my arms over my head.
He touched my face and I looked up at him.
“What are you doing?” I said in a dangerous voice, but I couldn’t keep the note of panic out of my voice. “Stop!”
“I’m living in the moment.” He said without looking up at me, but watching his own hand.
His hand traveled from my face, to my neck, and slowly to my chest. Not wanting to do what I was thinking I struggled again.
This time I got my foot out and kneed him in the groin. He let go of my and staggered back to grab himself. While he was down I kicked him in the stomach. He went down and I jumped to the roof.
I ran all the way to Jiye’s apartment and down the stairs. I rushed into the apartment and leaned against the wall. The only thing I wished to do was wash my face and neck. I could still feel his traitorous hands.
I turned to go into the bathroom, but stopped dead what I saw. The room looked as if a tornado hit it. Furniture was turned over and torn up. Blood was all over the floor. Even white feathers covered the floor.
I walked around looking for any signs of my friends. Under the couch I saw a pair of black boots.
I flipped it over and knelt down beside Alderen. He was bleeding, but not bad. I shook him slightly and he opened his eyes.
I smiled, but I was still worried about Jiye and Lector.
“I’m all right.” He said. “Go find Lector and Jiye.”
I stood up and walked around. I went to the guest room and found Lector sitting up against the wall, his head bowed.
I knelt beside him and looked at his wounds. He touched my hands and smiled. “I’ll be fine.” He said. “Just need rest.”
I smiled and nodded. I stood up and walked to Jiye’s room, and lying on the floor next to the bed was Jiye. She was lying on her side, slightly curled up. She had a large slash that extended from her collar bone to her hip bone. It was a clean cut with a sharp edge, but it was bleeding profusely.
I walked over to her and kneeled down. I listened to her shallow breathing and sighed. She was still alive, but for how long?
After that I went right to work. I grabbed the bandages out of the closet and placed them on the bedside table. I got out a washcloth and cleaned off the blood. To heal a large wound like this you need to wrap and clean it.
After I put her in nightclothes and tucked her in. I hoped she would live through the day.
Chapter five
The last rays began to fade and a small band of light crossed my eyes. Normally if I was a younger vampire this would burn my eyeballs out of my sockets, but since I’m not I only flinched and blinked to wet them. I have been up for the whole day. Not sleep after my run through the night. My eyes had turned a light red as sleep and hunger took over my body. Vampires need to sleep in order to conserve energy, but all energy and strength were slipping away slowly.
I blinked again after five minutes and looked up at Jiye’s bed. Her breathing was steady and in rhythm. I have been sitting in this corner, watching her in case there were any problems. Fortunately, there was none.
Movement in the corner of my eye made me get up and pull my gun out reflexively. Lector’s head popped in and he smiled slightly.
The lack of sleep made my knees buckle under me. I fell to my knees and dropped my gun. It felt as if someone knocked the wind out of me. Lector walked over and helped me up.
“You should rest. She’ll be fine.” He helped me to the couch and I sat down, leaning my head back. Alderen walked over and sat beside me. I laid my head on his thigh and closed my eyes. The last thing I remember was Alderen running his fingers through my hair.
****************
I woke in pitch, black, nothingness. The shades were drawn and the lights were turned out. The shades were mad to shut out all light.
I sat up and looked around with my night vision eyes. Even immortals would jump at the sight of two pinpricks of light suspended in air.
I stretched and cracked my neck. I stood up and snapped my fingers. The lights in the sitting room lit up the dark room. The fight from the night before was gone.
I peeked in Jiye’s room and saw she was gone. I walked into the kitchen and there was a note on the fridge:
Amilyia,
Jiye woke and she needed to feed.
We didn’t want to wake you.
There is a fresh bottle of blood in the fridge.
Help yourself and meet us in The Rose Bud.
Lector
The Rose Bud. I’ve always wanted to go there. It’s a bar for the immortals. Where all kinds of night crawlers come to have fun. Lycanthropes and night elves. Children of magic. Hags and people from the Black Market. In order to get in you need to show the bite marks of an immortal or a certain tattoo that can only can be seen under a black light. Fortunately, I have the tattoo. I was birthed a vampire, not turned. When I went for my birth certificate, they did the tattoo as I waited. I choose to have it on my forearm. The tattoo is a dragon wrapped around a rose with a letter ‘A’. The letter varies on the first name of the person.
I walked across the hall to my apartment and into my bedroom I quickly stripped of yesterday’s garments and changed into a short black skirt and a black halter-top with a red dragon. I pulled on my knee-high boots from the night I awoke. I quickly did my make-up. Black eyeliner and black eye shadow. Deep red lipstick. The last thing I grabbed was my long fitted coat.
I pulled on my helmet and started my motorcycle. I rode down the street and followed the beat of the techno-rock music.
I pulled up and parked in an underground parking lot. I got off and pulled my helmet off. I took my hair out from its bindings. I let it flow down my shoulders and back.
I started up the ramp to the street, coat fluttering as I walked. Looked as if I was walking on air. I opened the door and a wave of emotions hit me. Some heightened and some sexual.
I walked in and eyes began to watch me. Whispers sounded like hissing snakes. Those whispers were: “Amilyia.”
Yes. I was well known. The story of my awakening and past had gotten around. Probably thanks to Lector. Speaking of him, I scanned the crowd for any sign of my friends.
Spotting them in a small corner, I moved towards them. Alderen’s back was turned toward me and I grinned to myself as I saw the defined lines of his masculine back. I slipped my arms around his waist and buried my face in the soft plumage of his wings.
He turned around and embraced me in his strong arms. I nuzzled against his chest. He kissed the top of my head and I looked up at him. Being shorter than him, I lifted up on tiptoe and pecked him on his lips. I pulled back and saw a red tinge in his cheeks. I giggled and kissed him more passionately.
A groan sounded behind Alderen and someone said, “Awe. Get a room. For all that is good. Please get a room.”
I looked behind him and stuck my tongue out at Jiye. She stuck her tongue out back and said, “Don’t stick it out unless you plan to use it.”
“Just remember, I saved your life. You should be more grateful.” I said, walking up to her and staring down at her.
“Yeah. You’re right.” She said, hugging me. “Thank you.” She added in a whisper.
“So what are we here for?” I asked.
Lector grinned. “To get away from things.” He said, spotting a lovely young thing and starting to court her in his own strange way.
I turned to question this to Jiye, but she was already in deep conversation with a young man. Alderen touched me on the shoulder.
“Come. I’ll show you. Jiye taught you how to dance, right?” He asked. I shook my head. “Here. I’ll show you what I’ve observed.”
It started out bad and ended horrible. I was so clumsy. To me in my respectable old age, the music was too loud and the dancing was too personal. I ended up giving up and going to the bar and having a drink.
I picked out a liquor I was familiar with; Rum. The servants of the house snuck it in and I used to sneak down during the day and take a few swings. Of course, I couldn’t drink it straight up. There were a few you were kind enough to give me a few drops of blood.
The bartender gave me my drink and I sipped it. I smiled to myself. It was just how I remembered it. Warm as it went down.
I turned in my seat to watch the others. Lector was still talking to the girl but she didn’t look too happy. She suddenly drew her hand back and smacked him across the dace. She stormed off and Lector walked over to the bar.
“Too hot to handle?” I asked with a smirk.
He shrugged. “She’ll be back.”
Jiye and Alderen joined us soon enough and we spent the rest of the night drinking and laughing. Talking about the first thing that came to mind.
***************
I woke the next night in a very groggy state. I didn’t drink enough for a hang over, but enough to want to stay in bed forever.
I looked over at Alderen. He was still out cold. He drank the most out of all of us. He’s a funny drunk. It was fun to mess with his head.
I gently woke him up and he rolled over to look at me. He smiled and lifted his head. He winced and laid his head back down.
I laughed. “Looks like you have a hangover.” I said.
“Mm…” He said as he rolled over to get out of bed.
Alderen winced as Lector yelled through the door.
“Get your hung over asses out of bed. We’re going back to The Rose Bud.” He yelled.
Alderen groaned and held his head. “I should rip his vocal cords out.” He grumbled.
“Oh stop. He’s just being…Well, he’s being him.” I said.
After we showered and dressed, Alderen and I took the Mustang this time. Of course I drove. I sped down the street, following the familiar sound of the music.
We pulled into the parking lot and I shut off the engine. I was ready to get of the car when Alderen’s hand clasped around my wrist. I turned to look at him. He waved me over as if to tell me something, but when he leaned forward he kissed me gently on the lips. I pulled back and grinned. He smiled softly at me.
I got out of the car and headed up the ramp with Alderen, hand in hand. We neared the front door and a beefy immortal stopped us.
“Show me your marking.” He said in a deep, growling voice.
Alderen flipped his arm over and exposed his forearm. The vampire at the door pulled out a black light and shined it on him. The tattoo glowed brightly.
“Go ahead.” He said.
Alderen walked in and I showed the tattoo branded on my forearm. He shined the light and nodded and I walked in. The same wave of emotions washed over me.
We saw Jiye and Lector and walked over to them. They smiled and we sat down in the booth.
“We ordered you drinks. Alderen you have what Lector has. And Amilyia, you have what I have.” She pushed over a martini glass and the liquid was a coppery red.
“What is it?” I asked, taking a sip of the concoction.
“Vodka with a hint of blood.” She said, downing hers. I did the same and felt is slightly burn.
Alderen stood up and grabbed my hand. He dragged me to the dance floor. He danced behind me.
We danced for maybe an hour or so. By that time my sides and legs hurt from using muscles I don’t regularly use. Not to mention my head was buzzing after trying the bar’s strongest drink.
While sitting at the booth with Jiye, Alderen and Lector, the noise level of voices started to decrease. I also felt the sense of someone coming.
I turned as the crowd of people started to part. My betrayer and a group of men with very few women, walked towards us. Vampires only attack if they have to. The slayers don’t attack because they were so few.
“Fancy meeting you here, Amilyia.” He said.
“You b*****d! How dare you speak to her.” Alderen stood up, but I grabbed his wrist. He looked down questioning.
“Still obeying orders like a dog, Alderen.” He sneered.
Alderen went to lunge forward, but I stood up in front of him.
“That is enough.” I glared at Alderen for his rash actions. I turned to my betrayer and said, “What do you want, Delano ?” His name stung my lips, for he is nothing but a betrayer.
“Oh nothing really. Just trying to imagine you chained to the wall and that pretty little face of yours screaming in agony.” He grinned as he heard growls from Alderen. “Hurts, doesn’t it. Never heard such horrible things said about her, have you?”
My face was impassable, but my eyes blazed with hatred. My hand reached for my gun at my side, but the storeowner walked over, not caring if anyone got hurt, just for his store.
“Take it outside.” He said, staring at me.
“There will be no need. We’ll just leave.” Said Delano . He and his group of followers turned and headed out the door.
There was a sound of glass breaking and I turned to look behind me. Shards of glass were on the table and in the palm of Lector’s hand. Blood slowly dripped through his fingers. The owner looked as if he was going to have a heart attack.
“You broke a glass. You’ll have to p-.” He began to say, but Lector interrupted him.
“I don’t care! You shouldn’t either. You are immortal and you let scum in like those slayers. We are powerful. We should be making them beg at our feet for mercy.” He finished with a vicious growl.
The owner didn’t say anything after that. He turned and walked back to the bar. Jiye stood up.
“We should go. Come on.” She walked out and we all followed suit.
Alderen and I didn’t say anything on the way home, but I could still hear the growls coming from him.
I parked and I got out, without a word. We walked up to my apartment. I found that the door was unlocked. When I opened the door, Jiye and Lector were sitting at the kitchen table, bandaging Lector’s hand.
When we walked in Jiye stood up and watched me with eyes as if I was going to lash out at her. She looked like a child that had broken her mother’s vase and tried to put it together with super glue. The scent of her fear filled the apartment.
“What’s wrong, Jiye?” I asked as I took off my coat.
She looked at Lector and he nodded at her. “We have something important to tell you.” She said in a strained voice.
I leaned on the back of the couch and Alderen went to look out the window. “Ok. Shoot.” I said, fixing my eyes on her.
“Well, you know how there were two people missing on Delano ’s family tree?” She asked.
“Yes. What about it?” I pressed.
“Well, Lector and I are those missing people. We are the descendents of Delano .” She blurted out. She closed her eyes as if waiting for my outburst.
This shocked me. My eyes widened. It felt as if she slapped me in the face.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.
“We didn’t want you to go against us. We want to help you get rid of the slayers and Delano .” She said softly. “I’m sorry. Please forgive us.”
I watched her for a moment. She did look upset about not saying anything. I turned to Alderen.
“What do you think?” I said in his head.
“I say forgive them, but I have my own secret. I knew who they were. I met them in The Rose Bud. If they wanted to kill you they would have.” He said, turning from the window to look at me. “Forgive them, but I don’t think you’ll forgive me that easily.”
I turned back to Jiye. “I forgive you. I just wish you could have told me earlier.” I said, watching her face break into a smile.
“Thank you. Remember the scuffle that happened a few nights ago. That was Delano . His men came to kill Alderen and us. He doesn’t care for us. Just because we got turned and didn’t become slayers.” She said, keeping the conversation friendly.
“I see.” I sighed and closed my eyes for a few minutes and then opened them. “I’m tired. I think I’ll go to bed.”
Jiye nodded. “We’ll talk later.” She looked to Lector and he stood up. They left and I closed the door.
I walked into my bedroom and into the bathroom. I took off my make-up and brushed my hair. Alderen stood at the door and watched me.
“Are you mad at me?” He asked.
I looked up at him and saw that he looked saddened. I sighed again and set my brush down.
“No. I’m not. Just a little frustrated with this whole situation.” I said, walking past him and sat on the bed. He took off his coat and sat beside me.
“Then talk to me. Tell me what you want to do.” He said, taking my hand.
I looked down at his hand on mine. “I want to put this behind me. Tomorrow I’m going to think of what to do about Delano .” I squeezed his hand gently.
“That all?” He asked.
“Pretty much.” I said, taking off my boots and getting undressed.
I pulled on a pair of black pajama pants with a black tank top and sat in the middle of the bed. I watched Alderen pull his shirt off. It was interesting to see the wings slide through the holes so easily.
“How do you do that?” I asked.
“Do what?”
“Get your wings in and out of the holes in your shirt.” I said.
“Oh. Let’s just say since they are artificial they don’t flex like normal wings. I can make them like puddy or strong as iron. It’s just a simple control.” He said.
“Oh.” I sat and thought on that a bit.
He finished getting undressed and he lay on his side of the bed. I moved on top of him and laid my head on his chest. I listened to him breath and I closed my eyes. He placed his hands under my shirt and he rubbed my back. Being this comfortable, I slowly drifted off to sleep. Not knowing what tomorrow had in store for me.
Chapter six
I was aroused from my sleep, once again seeing my parent’s faces. But I didn’t cry. I have spent enough tears on their memories already. Now it was time to plan my revenge. Moonlight flooded through the window. Sooner or later I’ll have to get up.
I sighed and got out of bed. I changed into a pair of tight pants and a black shirt where the sleeves flared out. I braided my hair and wrapped it in a bun. I let a few strands of my hair hang in front. I frowned slightly at my appearance as I tried to make it perfect. I hated being a perfectionist. Alderen came up behind me and hugged me tight.
“You look beautiful.” He said, smiling.
“Thank you, but I can hardly call you handsome since your hair is all messed up.” I grinned.
“Well, excuse me for giving a compliment.” He pretended to pout and walk away.
I stuck my tongue out at him when he wasn’t looking and I walked out. I was taking a drink from the bottle of blood, when there was a knock at the door. I opened it and there was a young boy standing there.
“Can I help you?” I asked when he didn’t say anything.
“I would like to serve you in fighting against the slayers.” He said, giving a slight bow.
I was startled by this. I didn’t know what to tell this young fledgling.
“Hold on.” I got Alderen and told him to watch the kid. I walked over to Jiye’s and knocked on the door. Jiye was already up and dressed.
When I asked her what he meant she said, “After Lector’s little speech last night people have been wanting to join you to subvert the slayers.”
“But I wasn’t going to subvert the slayers.” I said, hysterically.
Alderen came from behind me and said, “Maybe you should.”
I thought on it. I turned to the fledgling and asked, “How older are you?”
He looked a little nervous. “Eight.” He said, looking at the ground.
“No. How long have been turned?” I corrected.
“Oh. A year tomorrow.” He said, looking up.
I was right with how young he was. I studied him a moment. He was well built for an eight year old, but he had a shy personality.
I’ve met other vampires, but never really talked to them, but mostly all of them had a gun on them or at home. This young one didn’t have a weapon.
I reached back and pulled my gun out. I pushed it into his hand and watched his reaction. He was surprised by this.
“Have you ever used one?” I asked.
He held the gun as if it was a bomb ready to go off. “No, but I’ve watched others in fights use it.”
“Uh huh? Well, what makes you think you’re a match for a slayer?” I said starting down at him.
“Well, I…um. Well…” He stuttered on his words.
“I’ll tell you what. Go to The Rose Bud and tell everyone to meet there tomorrow night. But if you think about turning traitor and going to the slayers, I’ll make sure you die first.” He nodded and ran down the stairs.
“You could have been nicer.” Alderen said, staring after the boy.
“I don’t want any problems.” I said as I turned to Lector’s. I kicked the door in and there was a girlish squeal from the kitchen. Followed by a deafening crash.
“I think you over did it.” Jiye commented.
I shrugged and walked in. I entered the kitchen and Lector was on his hands and knees picking up the glass shards from a bottle. Blood was splattered all over the floor.
“Yup. You over did it.” She said, watching him.
“Sorry Lector.” I helped him clean up.
When we were finished, he fixed me with a hurt stare, but waited patiently for me to say something. I put the last of the shards in the garbage.
“Your speech last night has made you famous. I just had a kid come to me and asked to serve me.” I said, watching him back. “And I said I was sorry so don’t look at me like that.”
He crossed his arms and stared at me with more sorrowful eyes. I rolled mine. “We just need to figure out what to do. Should we wage war or just lie low and be killed?” I looked at each of my faithful friends.
“I told you my views already.” Lector said with slight bitterness in his voice.
I looked to Jiye. “Jiye?”
“I’ll have to agree with Lector. This has gone on long enough.” She said, walking over to Lector.
“Alderen?” I looked over at him.
“What ever you want to do?” He said, but I can see in his eyes he wanted a war.
I nodded and thought a moment. A war would mean a lot of people would die. And that includes slayers. In order to win we would need a lot more than just the group of vampires that lived here.
I looked up and turned to each of my friends. “Yes. We’ll do it.” I looked to Lector. “Don’t hate me, but we need guns and ammunition.”
Lector grinned. “Good. You’ve picked my specialty.”
“Every time.” I said.
Alderen and I walked out into the hall and stood there for a moment. The young boy was standing there, staring at his hands.
Blood covered them. It dripped on the rug. Some blood was on his chin and it dripped down his neck and stained his shirt.
But his face. I thought I’d die. He was ready to start crying. I guessed he lived with a vampire with more experience and fed him what he needed. Even though he was turned a year ago, this was his first kill.
Alderen pushed me in the back. I sighed and walked over to the kid. He looked up at me and started crying. His shoulders were shaking. I pitied him for a moment.
I knelt down and hugged him close. He melted into me and sobbed bloody tears. I patted his back to comfort him.
“It’s alright, little one. It’s alright.” I said. For an eight year old, I thought he was a baby, but being only a year, he is.
“I didn’t mean to. I hadn’t eaten in three nights. I didn’t mean to. I didn’t mean to.” He sobbed into my shoulder.
“I know. I know. Don’t worry. It was an accident. It happens to the best of us.” I said. I looked up at Alderen and he smiled.
I pushed him back a little bit and lifted his chin so he’d look at me. Red tears still streamed down his cheeks.
I called to Jiye and her eyes widened at the site of all the blood. She looked as if she was going to panic.
“Don’t worry. It was an accident. He didn’t mean to kill the innocent human.” I nodded and gave her the hint that he was upset about it and scared.
“Could you clean him up?” I asked.
“Sure.” She took the boy’s hand. “Come on. Let’s get you all cleaned up.” She led him into her apartment.
I stood up and stared after them. Alderen placed a hand on my shoulder.
“You did well. You’d be a good mother some day.” He commented.
I snorted and walked into my apartment. I was not fit to bare children. I didn’t really favor children. I have no patience for them.
“What? You don’t think you’d be a good mother?” He followed me in and shut the door.
“Yes.” I said flatly.
“Why?” He asked.
“Alderen. I have no patience for them. I just don’t like them. The thought of having one is irritating.” I said, a little harsh.
“I don’t think that.” He said, shrugging.
“Well, I do and I’m not changing my mind.” I walked into my bedroom and laid on my stomach, on the floor. I reached under my bed and pulled out a huge box. I took the lid off and reached inside. I pulled out a 9mm with some extra designs. It was black, but it had engravings of roses and dragons.
“A little dirty, but it can be cleaned.” I said to myself.
I walked into the living room, Alderen had gone out, and placed the box on the coffee table. I pulled out the gun and started to disassemble it. I took each part and cleaned it well. I even took care of cleaning the barrel.
When it was clean and reassembled, I loaded a few rounds of lead. I cocked it back to feed it. I aimed at a vase, but didn’t fire.
I sat down and placed the gun on the table. I jumped when the phone rang. It was so quiet. I picked up the receiver.
“Hello? Hawkins’s residence.” I said.
There was cold laughter. “Amilyia. You sound so common now.” More laughter.
“Delano. What do you want?” I growled.
“I’ve heard of your war. I have heard the rumors. Everyone is talking about it. Since you’re going to be in it and you’d want to be the one to kill me, I’ll make a bet with you. One bullet. One shot. If I miss. I’m dead. You miss. You’re dead. You see? Do we have a deal?” He said slyly.
I thought a moment. “You’re on.” I hung up the phone.
When Lector gets the new guns, I’ll load that one with the one bullet. A silver bullet. One shot through the heart would be good. Problem is, will I be quick enough.
I leaned back and closed my eyes. I took deep calming breaths. In through the nose, out through the mouth. I concentrated on those words. Kind of a meditative state.
I didn’t hear him come in. I felt a touch on my hand. My eyes snapped open and I looked into the big brown eyes of the kid. He had his hands behind his back.
“Do you need something?” I asked him.
He held out his hand and there was a rose in it. I took it and smiled. The little boy smiled. I wrapped my arm around him.
“Thank you.” I ruffled his hair.
“You’re welcome.” He said.
“What’s your name?” I asked after a pause.
“Davey.” He said, softly.
“Well, Davey. Who put you up to this?” I asked.
He hesitated. “The one with the wings. He said it would be good for you.”
I smiled. He always knew how to make me smile. Even by using this boy.
“He did, did he? Well, I guess we’re going to have to pay him a visit.” I stood up.
I took his hand and we walked over to Jiye’s apartment. We walked in and Alderen was lying on the couch. He looked up when we came in.
“So, you got my gift?” He said, sitting up.
“Yes. Thank you.” I said.
Alderen saw me holding Davey’s hand. He smiled. “Does that mean that you like them?” He asked.
“Just this one.” I said, ruffling his hair again.
Alderen shook his head and stood up. He walked over and kissed me. Davey made a face.
“I’m sorry.” He said to me. “I just want one of my own, but it won’t work if you don’t share my feelings for children.”
“We’ll work on it.” I said.
There was a loud awe from behind Alderen. Jiye was standing behind him.
“You’re talking about having a baby. When? Tell me now.” She demanded.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. We’re not going to do that now. Too early. Plus, there is still the war.” I said. Alderen nodded in agreement.
“And Amilyia isn’t fond of children.” Alderen added.
Jiye faked a loud gasp. “How can you not like them?” She hugged Davey and lifted him up. “They are just so cute.” She rocked him side to side, his legs swinging.
I giggled at Davey’s face. His face clearly said, “Help me.”
“Okay. Okay. Put him down before he dies of affixation.” I grabbed her arm.
She let him sown and he staggered a bit. He ran over and hid behind my leg.
“Oops. Over did it. Sorry Davey.” She said, apologetically.
He looked at her from behind me leg and smiled slightly. He still clung to my leg. I placed my hand on his head and smiled.
Alderen, Davey and I walked back to my apartment. I was thinking about why Davy came to me. We walked in and I knelt down to talk to him.
“If you haven’t eaten in a while, then where is your creator?” I asked him.
At this he looked as if he was going to cry again.
