Chapter 12 Peace and Conflict
“Tornado how are you feeling?” Flora asked as he stumbled into the parlor. Two couches sat facing each other with a low table between them.

“I’ve been better.” He answered taking a seat beside Aero. He sighed as he pressed his palm against his aching forehead. He answered the other’s worried looks. “I hate staying in bed. I’m fine.” He still felt the stares from across the room. “Did Aero tell you what happened?”

“Not in detail.” Flora answered. “She just said you didn’t seem yourself.”

“What happened?” Rook questioned.

There was a knock on the door. “Please excuse our intruding.” A servant entered holding the door for another to push in a cart of beverages. They glanced over at Aero and Tornado whenever they got a chance. When the first servant reached Aero she offered, “miss, if you’re cold we can light a fire.”

“Oh! No it’s perfectly fine.” Aero answered embarrassed, “but thank you.”

Panic filled the air as they left the room. Nervous glances passed between Aero, Tornado, and Flora.

“Aero, Tornado,” Rook began as he placed his drink softly on the low table, “why don’t you ever take off your cloaks? If it’s anything I can help you with please don’t be afraid to ask.” The three glanced at each other frantically.

“Say Rook. You must travel a lot. What do you think of ethereal?”

“I’ve never met one before so I can’t exactly feel a certain way about them.” Rook asked, “why are you so curious all of a sudden?”

“Well, um-”

“I’m an ethereal.” Aero blurted out twisting the hem of her cloak.

“Just you?” Rook asked glancing at Tornado.

“Y-yeah.” Aero explained. “I was embarrassed so I asked Tornado to keep his cloak on, too.”

“We’re both ethereal.” Tornado contradicted.

“No. Tornado it’s okay you don’t have to-”

“Wouldn’t it be odd if I kept my cloak on while I’m the one who’s supposed to be faery?”

“Oh. You’re right.”

Rook laughed. “I don’t mind if you’re ethereal. You two may not have noticed but I don’t exactly fit in here either.”

“What do you mean?” Aero asked confused, “You’re faery.”

“I may be faery but I’m not light. In fact, I’m the only dark faery in this entire city. The same is the case in the capitol.” Rook explained. “This realm prefers the light to rule. When it falls to darkness, as it has now, chaos ensues. Now, not only do we lack a queen we also lack light.”

“It wasn’t chaotic where we lived.” Aero pointed out.

“Actually it was.” Tornado informed her. The people may have been at peace but nature wasn’t. Since it was all you grew up knowing you probably couldn’t notice the war between the nature and elements. I came from a ‘grey area’ where light and darkness were at peace.”

“So once Flora becomes queen there will be true peace?” She aksed.

“Aero!” Flora scolded.

Rook laughed “Yes that would be the case.”

Despite Rook’s assurance that he didn’t mind if he was ethereal or not Tornado kept on his cloak. Rook’s story of how he didn’t fit in only gave Tornado more reason to keep on his cloak. He persuaded Aero not to worry about it since she was accepted because of her light.

Tornado sat on the windowsill in the corridor facing the private yard of the palace. The lake reflected the shimmering stars that lit the night sky above.

“You’re still keeping on your cloak?”

Tornado jumped down from the sill. “Oh. It’s you.” Rook stood in the torchlight. “If this is about the memories I already told you I have nothing you need to know.” He leaned back against the wall. “As for the cloak I have my reasons.”

“I think I know just the thing.” Rook headed back down the hall. “Don’t you worry. They’ll be here by morning.”

Tornado was thoroughly confused but didn’t consider the situation until morning when he was woken up by a knock on the door. He walked over passing the curtain behind which Aero slept soundly to the door. When he opened it no one was there and the hall was empty. Looking down he found two packages.

“What are those?” Aero asked sleepily sitting up in bed.

“I’m not sure but they’re for us.” He handed her the package with a tag labeled with her name. She opened her package and revealed an elegant faery style dress.

“It’s beautiful!” She exclaimed.

“I guess they’re expecting us to stay a while.” Tornado informed her reading a letter attached to his package. “More will be delivered tonight.”

“I’m so excited!” Aero exclaimed holding the dress up to herself. “I can’t wait to show Flora!”

Tornado held his cloak close as he stomped down the corridor. When he came to the parlor he slammed the door open scanning the room. “You!” He growled.

“Ah. You’re wide awake this morning.” Rook calmly answered placing down his book.

“What game are you playing at?” Tornado accused. “I know you did it!”

“Did what?”

Tornado threw his cloak down to show the outfit from the package. “When I came back to my room my old clothes were gone.” His shirt had ridiculously puffy sleeves and frills by his collar. Over top was a very pale red vest that extended nearly to his knees. Embroidered along the bottom were images of spring and beneath he wore dark purple tights.

“It’d look better with the hat to match.” He smirked.

“I knew it!”

Flora and Aero peeked into the room trying to muffle their giggles. Tornado grabbed his cloak and covered himself.

“The hat’s not that bad.” Aero smiled putting on the pale red hat fit with dark purple plume.

“I refuse.” Tornado grumbled.

“Maybe if it wasn’t so… flamboyant.” Flora agreed.

“I’ll talk to the tailor.” Rook walked over to Tornado. “If you talk about the memory.”

Silence filled the room.

“Aero and I are not part of your prophecy.” Tornado glared. “I don’t care about all this fate and destiny garbage. What happened to us back then isn’t something that should happen to anyone. We’re finally free from it so don’t you dare drag us back in!”

“Tornado.” Aero stepped between them. “There’s no harm in telling him what happened. If more people know about it won’t it show how unjust the hate between light and darkness can be?”

Flora added. “She’s right. Fights between faery and ethereal are just as unjust.”

“Tch.” Tornado turned away.

“I’ll tell you.” Aero offered. “I’ll tell you the true story the memory.”
