Shoemy's Rants
Cell phones
Ok, this is my first little attempt at doing a journal, so if it's terrible I apologize in advance. Constructive criticism is welcome.

Cell Phones

A lot of people own one today. Most families have at least one. And they're becoming more advanced seemingly by the day.

But do we really need all the things that have been added to them?

Seriously, when I got a cell phone, it was just to call home if I would be staying later at school or something. That was all I needed it for: emergencies... and the occassional long-distance call to a friend, but that's not the point... I usually just needed it to make a quick call to my parents, say "Hey, I need a ride, the meeting's over." , and that's it. And I used it for talking.

Last time I checked, phones were for talking on (hence the term cell phone), not text messaging (essentially instant messaging), checking e-mail, listening to music, etc. If a person (usually teenagers) can't take time from their "busy" schedule to sit down at a computer to do all that stuff, then they seriously need to make some. It bugs me that a person can't just call their friends anymore. It takes like 2 minutes to say what it takes 10 minutes to "text". What annoys me even more is when people text to other people sitting across the freakin' room. If something is really that secret, and I can't even think of another good reason to text to someone that close, wait until later to say it or lower your voice. That noise of everyone just clicking away is going to drive someone in the group right up the wall.

Another thing that bothers me is the age that some people are getting cell phones.

When I got mine, I was in 10th grade and I've had the same one ever since. Now you see little grade schoolers walking around at the mall with them. Why do they need them? I can understand the possible need to call parents from a store or something (even though they probably shouldn't even be there alone in the first place, but that's another rant), but what else do they really need them for? To waste their parents money because they don't understand the concept of "minutes"? Sure.

And the reason that some of them get them is because they constantly whine about it. A lot of parents' reaction to this is to just get them one to make them stop. How does this teach them anything? A classmate of mine, who is a parent, said something quite smart on the topic today: "It's so much harder to be a good parent, than to be a bad parent and give in." He was absolutely right. A the parents who give in are teaching their children is how to be spoiled. Nothing admirable.

Anyway, I guess all I'm saying is that cell phones have pretty much gotten to the point where they're not phones anymore, and little kids really don't need them.
