Just Flowing Along...
I game. I read. I watch a little T.V.
and this might help my lovecraft speach:

LOL! I recall the quote, though not the exact wording; it was something
like: "I first try to produce terror; if I can't reach that, I go for
horror; if I can't get there, I go for the gross-out!"

Does anybody think that 'going for the gross-out' is purely a modern
American genre, or is it just that we aren't 'grossed-out' by what we read
in the scary fiction of our gaslight era? Did those authors intend to
gross us out and has their language/fear simply paled in comparison more
graphic modern portrayals, or did they not intend such reactions in their
readers as an average viewer might feel upon seeing the latest slasher
film?

Athan

it's a good point!
