Things of Value


Through my nineteen years of life I have been graced with many things that hold great value to me. Some are of extreme importance and I was lucky enough to be born with them. Others are small and may not seem to be important but hold great value and meaning all the same. There are many different catagories that these values can fall into, and for the purpose of truly introducing myself I have chosen five different catagories and the things of most importance to me in each.

I will start with the person that I treasure the most and have been gifted with their presence since birth; my mother. My mother has always been the most important person in my life and I can say with certainty that she always will be. She is accepting of all the things I wish to try and supporting of all the things I wish to be. I know that she loves me more than the world because she tells me so every day. I admire her strength and her compassion and her great sense of humor. She is funny and nice and can always be counted on to lend a helping hand or a supportive shoulder to lean on. The most important thing, however, is that she is my mother and I have the utmost respect and love for her and that is what makes her special to me.

The next categorie is for the personality trait that I find the most valuable in myself and others. The trait is commonly called nerdiness, a somewhat derogitory term from people that don’t understand it, but for lack of a better word I will use it anyways. Nerdiness to me is simply a great enthusiams/ boarderlining obsession for certain subjects ranging from academics to comics. It could be having read every Harry Potter book more than once and waiting up till midnight at Chapters to be one of the first to pick up the next book. It could also be someone who loves comic books/anime and is willing to put time and effort into making a costume for Cosplay or even knowing all the facts and history about a favorite sports team. Nerdiness is the willingness to fully embrace a topic and allows everyone a chance to let loose in the world of their fan-favorites where everything else is so serious. So don’t hide your nerdiness, embrace it, because I think its cool.

Specail places are sometimes needed where you can be completely free with yourself and be as much of a nerd as you like. My room, otherwise known as my sanctuary, is one of those places. People can enter my room, but they will never see exactly what I see because every nook and cranny of it holds meaning to me. It holds all of my secrect memories and treasures such as my many bookshelves stacked with my novels, comic books and manga. Its where I can dance and sing to my hearts content without hurting or scaring anyone. My room is where I let my imagination run wild and where I have my hidden sword collection. My room is mine, my own, my precious (gratuitous Lord of the Rings rip-off) and I find it essential to have a place to wind down when the world or my family becomes too much . If I move I will still be able to take my room with me, even if it is just a corner of a dorm scattered with books and fluffy toys. My special place that is just for me is not made so from the objects that adorn it, but the sense of freedom, space and safety it gives me. These are the reasons why my room has made this list.

Another thing that brings me comfort and is worthy of mention is my bunny. My bunny is not a pet, nor is it alive and kicking… or hopping. It’s a wonderful stuffed animal that I borrowed (read, ‘Stole’) from my mother. Bunny is the guy who gives me good dreams and whom I generally snuggle with (read, ‘Squish) when I sleep. He is soft and white and I doubt I could get a good nights sleep without him. He also does well as a pillow because he is a little soft around the middle, but don’t tell him I said that, it might hurt his feelings. My bunny reminds me of my mother and because of this fact and that he also guards my dreams, he is something of great value.

I cant be asleep all of the time however, so when I need something to lift my spirits and make me laugh I find a quote from a book or the internet that reflects my current mood. One such quote, my current favorite, was said by Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) and rang true with one of the ways I view the world. "Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you." This particular quote has always amused me. In my mind sanity is boring, an afliction, and if you happen to be suffereing from it, you must immediately seek out someone, such as Mr Carl Gustav Jung or myself, who can help you get that fixed. This is my mindset just now, and so that is my favorite quote.

So though this is but a short list of valued things, and though they may or may not be the most vital topics, they are all important to me in their own ways. These things may not have any significance to the real world, but each of these wonderful people, quirkey persionality traits, tiny corners of the universe, small objects and weird quotes is a part of what makes my life special. You might not understand any of this, but that is perfectly alright. Everyone views the world differently and that is exactly how it should be. In fact, I would even say its something I value.
