Annoyed Whitefeather said, “She’s coming with me and then I’ll be along to help in a few. Now go!” He then took my hand and led me away. I gave them a helpless look and followed Whitefeather, never knowing I would lose both forever. My heart beat faster and I could feel my face turn red as I realized where we were going. Giving a final look around Whitefeather opened the door and shoved me inside.
Turning to face him, I could hear the shouts of the villagers and nervously asked, “Shouldn’t we help too?”
Before he answered he closed his eyes and sighed heavily as if he was trying to forget everything that was happening outside the door. It made him seem so much older then he was and in a small, strained voice said, “I’m going to but you need to hide and quickly.”
Cocking my head to one side I asked, “Hide, why?”
“Red-eye and the Darkest are attacking, using the storm as their cover,” he answered simply.
“Red-eye…But how do you know besides I thought the Element Orbs protected
Us?” I asked not really believing him.
“I can feel his evil and I’ve seen his men. Somehow Red-eye has gotten the Element Orbs but under no circumstances can he get the one he wants,” Whitefeather said.
“There’s another one?” I asked
“Yes, it’s the one on your necklace. It’s called the Spirit Orb, master of the elements,” Whitefeather replied.
My hand went to my neck where a silver necklace. “How did I get it?”
“It was given to you at birth, I’m not sure why you were chosen but the Divine Dragon picked you,” he answered.
The necklace was made of fine silver molded into the shape of a heart with a cross which had a dragon wrapped around it. In the center of the cross was a round pearl colored orb. “What’s the Divine Dragon?”
Whitefeather sighed and said, ”You’ll find out soon enough.” He then led me to the middle of the floor where he pulled up a trap door. I couldn’t believe I never noticed it before, it blended perfectly into the floor. “No matter what you hear do not come out until it completely quiets down,” Whitefeather ordered.
A million thoughts, emotions, and questions raced through my mind as I nodded and walked down the stairs. I looked up and saw Whitefeather flash me a sad smile before he closed the door. It wasn’t until the darkness pressed in on me that I knew I was truly alone at least for the moment.
Chapter 2 Whitefeather

With Catra safely hidden I walked out to face Red-eye and his men. The thunder was a bit deafing and the wind pulled me in different directions all at once. The Darkest had already gathered the villagers, most who were either injured or were women and children. The men were bound in heavy iron collars around their necks; the women and children were huddled in a corner fear clearly showing in their colored eyes.
Before I could say or do anything the air behind you spilt as pain engulfed me.
I felt the blood spill from my back as I struggled to remain conscious, Darkest soldiers surrounded me and heaved to my feet. “So the mighty Whitefeather is easily beaten,” a voice sneered from in front of me.
I looked to see Red-eye sitting on a dragon’s back; the dragon was a deep crimson with glowing yellow eyes. It’s teeth and claws were made of ivory and as I looked it snarled mightily. Sneering myself; I said, “I wouldn’t be so easy to beat if you dared to face me alone.”
My brother snarled in rage and jumped from the dragon’s back, I smiled knowing it would only anger him further. He, however, only smiled and declared; “You won’t be damn cheeky when I get the Spirit Orb.” I didn’t say anything in reply as he stepped up to me and pushed my backward. I stumbled and quickly regained my balance only to be pushed again but harder this time.
I crashed through the door to my hut and landed hard on my back; I rolled to my side and threw up as pain cascaded through my entire body. My brother loomed above me; sneering, clearly enjoying seeing me in pain. He had mid-night colored fur with matching wings, piercing red eyes (hence the name), and tail blade. I’ll admit I was frightened but not for myself; Catra was here, hidden under the floor. If he found her now it would be all over, he’d kill you both and destroy the Spirit Orb.
I’ll also admit that I had deep feelings for Catra though I never told her. I watched as she grew from a rowdy child to a loving and caring adult despite losing her parents. She was our only hope; I crawled to where the trap door was concealed and sat on it making sure my brother wouldn’t find and make sure Catra couldn’t open it. I bent my head low and could hear her quiet whimpers, and I could also smell he fears and I silently prayed no one else could. “Where is it?” my brother asked.
“Gone, gone to where you can’t touch it,” I huffed.
“Lair!” he yelled as a whip materialized out of nowhere. I heard the crack of it moments before it impaled itself into my flesh. I jerked in pain and started to tremble violently but I kept silently, not giving the b*****d the satisfaction of knowing he had hurt me.
Taking a shuddering breath I hissed, “Hurt me all me you want, I won’t tell you anything.”
“I will find it and kill whoever holds it. I shall make sure none of your kind can summon the Divine Dragon,” my brother vowed.
I tried to say something but words failed me as the pain finally overwhelmed; fortunately I was spared from answering as a soldier rushed in through the door. In a gasping breath he said, “Sir, the villagers have been gathered and counted. One appears to be missing.”
My heart nearly stopped as Red-eye smiled and giving me an icy and triumphant glance asked, “Very well, did you get a name?”
