When they finally reached her Promised land, she was draped over Rant's arms. He set her down gently and told her that he's going to go away for a little while. He was going to go into his den. He needed to keep his structure sound for the blow that this reunion was going to deal him.
He left, and left Ashling and Keir in a sorry state of affairs. She was looking almost as beat up as he was, and still in the form of a little girl; though she had no scratch on her, you'd swear she was covered. She was irrationally upset..
"Keir," she said quietly. "You lost her."
He looked down. "I need to go back to the city." Her heart tightened again, she clutched it. Every sentence he uttered was stinging her. She was fighting herself bitterly to keep from WANTING him to say what she wanted him to say. Because.. she knew he'd say it..
"I want to go back to the city," he said again. finally able to take revenge on her. the wasn't looking at him. He stood up and tilted her chin up to him and smiled down at her.
"the city is where I belong," he whispered. "I don't belong with you."
Tears filled her eyes. She was breaking again. The hole was getting deeper again. She felt it pump through her veins. every word he said pumped through her veins..
And even though this was the worst thing he could possibly do to her, she still felt him. And she knew, that the words he said, they shared. It was a truth. THE truth. The only truth in the world. the only truth in existence. He knew .. too much. He knew too much and because of her sacrifice, he had a place to speak.
She was the only one who could open that portal and give him that space.
And he was using it to break her.
His freedom to break her, because she had a hand in creating him.
She exhaled and forgot to inhale. He smiled and kissed her forehead. "I'm proud of you," he said. His words..
Her truth.. His words. Was this what love...she refused to think it, and his smile widened as she banished the thought.
"Yes," he said.
"I want to leave," he said. "I belong out there... I belong with them."
"People," Ashling said in disgust. Keir nodded. "People."
She raised her hand, and before she snapped her fingers she looked at him. "May I come see you in the city, now?" she asked quietly. She quieted her heart and her energy to be open to his answer. things fell silent between them for a long moment, before he nodded.
"Yes, my little monster," he said. "Not too often. We'll scare them..."
Ashling nodded and snapped her fingers.
And woke up.
