{Keep in mind I just made up this random story off the top of my head, so be gentle. sweatdrop }
I just read it forl ike the first time scince i wrote it and, DAUMMM! This is kinda freaky for me... I dont have a clue why, but it is...
The soft pitter-patter of rain created a diverse melody of rythm and beat as it struck the hard, cold glass of Romi's house. Romi, the whole meaning for my existence these days. About a year and a half ago I moved to the small state of Washington, It was after my eighteenth birthday and I hated the california life. All of those eighteen years I'd dreamed of living somewhere where the lullabye of the rain could sing me to sleep each night, so I moved to washington, where the sun never shines.
"You seem awfully quiet today, is there something wrong?" The worry in Romi's voice was obvious. We met at a book club about a year ago and have been inseparable ever scince. We both shared the same love for books and the written word.
"No," I sighed. "I was just listening to the rain, its beautiful isn't it?" There were no lies between us, apart from the fact that for a period of time I diddnt know he was an Elf. Yes, and Elf. But not even that tiny little insiganificant fact could keep us apart.
"Yes," He sighed in response. "It is quite the melody isn't it?"
"Yes it is." I said into his chest. He began stroking the length of my hair as I burried myself deeper into his side. I never wanted to leave from his side, but I had to go back to my lonely house at about 5 because my parents were comming to visit for a while. I was planning to introduce them to Romi, finally. It was kind of strange though, why had they not come sooner? Oh well, I shoved the thought into the dark rescesses of my brain to probably return when I had time to really think again.
"You have to go soon," he whispered into my ear. I could hear sadness dripping from every one of his symphonic syllables. "I dont want you to leave," he chuckled.
"Niether do I, But if my parents show up and im not there..." I Trailed off.
"Yes, I know." he kissed my forehead once before sitting up gently and swiftly walking to the corner of the room where our shoes lie together. He slipped his on, and returned to me with mine. He slipped one on and then it's twin, I felt a little like Cinderella with the whole shoe thing. That is if prince charming was an Elf instead of royalty and Cinderella worked at Borders, instead of for her mean old step mother. Romi pulled me up off the soft couch intp his chest to hug me once before he swept me off into the rain to his blue Toyota. The car was still with tension already, the closer we drove to my house the closer Romi was to meeting my parents. I dont know why we were so nervous, I'd explained to him that even if my parents diddnt like him, I would never leave. We were inseparable now.
"Here we are." Romi was radiating stress by now, I thought about what I could do to make him feel more at ease. Nothing, I was a crappy problem solver.
"See you at six sharp," I said emphasising the 'sharp'. My humor worked he grinned and laughed.
"Sharp." He agreed. I stuck out my cheek as if to say, 'you may kiss me now'. He pecked me softly and as his soft lips brushed my cheek I think I felt my heart stop. Then it realized it had a body to work and continued it's loud thumping. I stepped out of the car and walked up to the porch, I looked back. Romi was waiting for me to walk into the house like he always did. Waving once and saw him smile and wave back. I turned the key and steped into the house. * * * "Crap," I cursed to myself as I heard the crunching of the gravel in my driveway. They were here. Skipping-and nearly tripping-down the hallway, I stopped infront of the mirror to check myself. I wore a homey dress and-despite Romi's warning-heels.
I flung the front door open and threw myself at my mother. I did miss them, but i had Romi, and he was just as good now.
"Hi mum, Hi dad!" I was hugging them tightly and pecking them each on the cheek, of course I was wearing lip stick so I had to get that off with a towel.
"Hello hon! We've missed you so much!" My mother cried as she hugged me a second time. I stealthilly glanced at the kitchen clock behind her back, 5:57. Three minutes...
"Let me just take you to your room where you guys can get settled in and put your stuff away." I stumbled clumsily accross the house to the guest room where they would be staying. Stealing another glance at the bathroom clock I saw it read 5:59. Holy crap, I got them to thier room and shut the door behind me. Then the only noise I wanted to hear at that moment sent my heart into rapid palpitations. Three little raps on the front door meant that Romi was finally here.
I stupidly forgot I was wearing heels and began to rat to the front door. That got me all of nowhere. I rolled my ankle and fell to the floor with a loud 'THUD! Hearing the noise, Romi used the spare key only him and I knew about to open the door and he was instantly at my side. To my extreme embarrassment I felt a tear well over my bottom lid and fall onto the carpet below.
"You dumb-a**, I warned you not to wear heels." He said, his lovely green eyes burning under thier lashes. Completely sidetracked I noticed he wore a Black vest and a white collar shirt that made him look absaloutely purfect, not like he diddn't look perfect in everyhting he wore.
"Anne? Did yo hear me? Why did you wear these?" He asked holding up my left shoe. His hand flutered ligher than a butterfly's wing and stroked my throbbing left ankle.
"Wull," I began, but I was cut off by my parents thundering into the room. I noticed he was crouched over me, our heads inclined toward eachother impulsively.
"Anne? What's--?" My mother began but stopped once she caught sight of me and Romi at such a close proximity. Did someone cough? Oh well... Romi helped me to one of my feet and slung my arm around his shoulder and his arm around my waist. Limping into my family room, he helped me to sit down and then finally introduced himself to my folks.
"Hello, my name is Romi. It is so nice to finally meet both of you." He was so gentlemanly, it almost made me feel like I was meting him for he first time. My Parents were dumbstruck still in the other room. He strode across the room and shook both thier hands, then he was in the kitchen digging in the freezer for some ice.
"Maybe I should cook." Romi whispered to me when he was sitting on the autimen at my foot.
"You can cook?" He had never cooked for me before this. This was a slightly surprising remark on his part.
"Yes, just because I dont exploit it doent mean I dont have it." He chuckled. I considered that for a moment.
"Okay chef Romi. What is on the menu?" I asked teasing a bit. His face twisted a but into a confused state.
"Well, I was just going to cook what ever you had planned." He stared into my face, his emerald eyes glinting in the light.
"I was going to fry up some chicken on the stove," I admitted sheepishly.
"Oh," he gasped.
"What?" I asked.
"I've never cooked chicken before, this should be promising." He grinned. I arched one of my eyebrows and looked him full on in the face.
"Are you sure you don't want me to cook, I'm feeling better..."
"You can stand next to me and Help cook, how's that?"
"Fine," I mumbled. "But if you set my kitchen on fire im holding you completely and utterly responsible." I was joking and he knew that.
"That sounds fair." He said.
"Now help me up," I commanded. he put an arm around my waist and hoisted me up from the couch and I stumbled clumsily into the kitchen.
* * *
The dinner was fantastic, Romi managed not to burn my kitchen and house to the ground so that was nice also. From what I could tell my parents liked Romi, and already considered him a son. Apparently they planned to stay for the rest of the week which was like three days total, I took them to a bunch of places id seen over a hundred times.
But my mother would always say things like, "Oh, Romi isn't planning on joining us today?" She would arch a thin brow.
And i'd say something like, "Well I wasn't planning on it." But before I could finish she's insist Romi accompanied us on that particuler trip.
The week passed quickly, too quickly. I diddn't want them to leave os on the morning of thier departure I cooked breakfast for them and told them I loved them a hundred and ninety-seven times. Romi offered to drive without my mother's invite, of course she said yes. When we got the the port I gave my folks a huge bear hug and stepped aside for Romi.
"It was absououtely wonderful to spend time with you two," he said.
My mom came up to him and hugged him around his waist and patted his head, "Your a real sweetie." she walked over to hug me again and whispered in my ear, "He's a keeper." She steppedf back smiling next to my dad while he and Romi shook hands.
After my parents boarded thier plane with one last glance at us standing at the terminal Romi whipeded into my ear, "I absoloutely adore your parents." He was smiling so wide i could see his molars.
"Yes, well i'd love them a hell of alot better if they'd stop trying to ambush you and embarass me." I pouted.
"Oh, c'mon Anne. It wasn't that bad." he said squeezing me to his chest. "Besides I hardly heard the things they were saying to me the phone reception was so bad."
"Uh-huh, okay elf boy." I said reaching up to kiss him on the cheek. I saw him blush just the faintest which was slightly satisfying, he was usually the one who made me blush.
"C'mon, lets go home." He said grasping my hand tightly. We strode across the parking lot and got onto the main road. He diddn't let go of my hand even though he was driving.
"Listen," he said suddenly. "I was wondering if tomorrow you might like to go to this park with me." He turned his head to look at me for a half of a second. "And if we walk a bit deeper in thees a stream where my mother used to take me when I was a child. It was also the place where my father proposed to my mother." he smiled a bit after he said that like he had a secret, but I could care less. As much as I hated secrets, he could take me to a waste plant and i'd still have fun just for the pure fact i was with him.
"That sounds absoloutely awesome," I said with real enthusiasm. His teeth gleamed in the light of a street lamp.
When we stepped up onto the front of my porch, he leaned in and kissed me on the cheek. I shifted my weight onto my left foot and crossed my arms.
"Is that all I get?" I said aggrivated. He smiled and stepped forward and kissed me on my lips. His soft lips were smooth compared to my badly chapped lips, but he diddn't notice from what I saw.
"See you at ten tomorrow." He said stepping off the porch and trotting over to hus car. I watched as he pulled away and sped down the street and turned the corner.
"Home sweet home," I said as I flopped my purse on the counter and shed my hefty jacket. I was really tired so I diddn't even change and threw myself on my bead and was out before you could count to two and a half.
In the morning I woke up, but the sun was too bright. Wait, too BRIGHT! I grabbed me clock and checked the time, 9:27. CRAP! I only have a half an hour to get ready. Making record time I showered put on eyeliner and ate some breakfast with three minutes to spare.
A quiet knock on my hollow door sent my heart into a frenzy. "Well hello." Romi greeted me with a huge grin. I burst out of my house and nearly kocked him over in my hurry to kiss him. He dropped the basket in his hands, wait basket? I pulled away from him with my arms still locked around his neck.
"Basket?" I asked.
"Ah, yes well I thoguht you might get hungry while we were there so I arraneged a little picnic for us. He smiled again revealing his pearly whites, and I saw a enthusiastic glint in his emerald eyes. I crushed my lips to his again and he wraped his arms around my waist. He hugged me again and picked up the basket and said, "Shall we?"
"Lets," I laced my fingers through his and we walked out to his car.
The drive to the park only took about 30 minutes, but the walk to the tiny clearing where the brook stood was about 45 minutes. We spread out the classic checker-board quilt and ate some sliced vegatables. Stuff like sliced sweet peppers and carrots and celery, I lost a combination of twenty pounds eating with Romi. Heh, the North-washington Romi diet. He pulled out a small carrot cake and I gasped when I saw what it was garnished with. Yes, the traditional frosting carrots but i nthe middle was a gold wedding band.
"Oh, Romi! Is that--," but I couldnt even finish. Romi took out a cloth and plucked out the band. He began cleaning it from the frosting and cake and I saw it had a small emerald set in the middle of the gold band.
He lifted me up by my hand and he got down on his left knee himself. I was almost hyperventalating now. "Anne, I may be an Elf, but I love you with every fiber of my being. Marry me?"
I couldn'y breathe, much less say yes. But i tried. "Y-Yes!" He stood and slid the gold band on the third finger on my left hand and kissed me on my cheek.
We ate the cake and began to put everything away when I saw Romi tense out of the corner of my eye. "What's wrong? What---" but I was cut off by two gunshots in the distance.
"Damn, poachers. Probably drunk if you ask me. But don't worry I dont think they're comming this way." I tried to relax, but the knot in my stomach tightened reflexively. We packed faster until two more gunshots came much closer, like barely a hundred yards away. Then Searing pain ripped into my chest and back.
"ROMI!!!" I Screamed as I crumpled. But Romi was there to catch me like he always was. His eyes widened as the blood stained the front of my blousse, I couldn't breathe, My time was almost up.
He held me close, "Oh, god. No, no, no. God no Anne NO!" Romi shouted as I felt myself go limp and i gasped my last breath.
Romi's POV
One, Two gunshots in the nearby forrest. The i heard Anne's Pained cry, "ROMI!!!" I turned lightening fast and caught her right as she was crumpling to the floor.
"Oh, god. No, no, no. God no Anne NO!" I cried. Elves weren't built to cry, when we did cry because of extreme emotional distress that would cause regular humans to commit suicide we cried blood tears. Her Breathing became staggered and she went limp in my arms.
I don't know how ling I sat there clutching her to my chest, but I couldn't let go. I pressed my lips to her cold cheek one last time, leaving a streak of crimson liquid behind. "God, no." I sobed one last time.
