Into the darkness: Arika the Beloved
They say that on a moonless night, if you see a moon like figure… you disappear into the darkness and you will be forever lost in it…

The stars in the sky are beautiful. They shine so brightly and you can’t imagine a more beautiful sight in the night sky. And yet, here I am sitting down in my room with the desk facing the window as it touches the wall. There were a few papers sitting on it with a book open underneath them. A pen, pencil, and an eraser sit on top of these papers that were full of beautiful drawing of people happily enjoying something they all love. Sometimes, I wish I can do the same thing, but here I am in my room on a spinning chair. I’m stuck in here for three years, until I can finally leave this place. I’m far away from my family currently and I don’t like this feeling one bit. Although personally I must say, that I’m glad to be as far away from my neighbor as possible.

He’s a pain in the neck and I really hate the fact that he’s doing his best to make me come back home to the place I was born in. I would go back to visit my family and very close friends, but to go back and see his face? That’s something I really don’t want to live out. Miles is a pain in the neck, to the point where you want to grab something and make him shut up. It’s not that he’s too talkitive or anything. It’s the things he wants to talk about. Miles is a ghost fanatic that would go to the ends of the world to prove that ghosts exist. I don’t believe in ghosts, but I believe in omens such as the one I have recently heard of about the moon like figure on a moonless night.

It started out like a normal day in college and it was the end of class. I understand the fact that college students would head out already to go to either their next class or back home, but when it came to them talking to each other, I was uncomfortable. There was a group of young women that were talking about the omen of the moon like figure on a moonless night. I had to hold in my breath when I heard them saying that you would be sucked into the darkness and be gone forever if you see the moon. They say it’s a monster that’s almost approximately like the angler fish where it uses the moon like figure to lure people into seeing it, and then gobbling them up. My mind was full of that stuff, until a familiar hand touched my shoulder. I jumped and turned around, only to find the person I loved so much, Senato.

Senato was a really smart person. He’s at the top of his class. I’m impressed to actually be friends with a junior that’s extremely smart. I actually see him as my mentor when it comes to having our little study sessions. We take a few classes together, and each of those classes I love to be in because Senato was there. He sat next to me and was asking me questions about the moonless night omen.

Every time we were going to discuss something like that, I get really scared and I start to shake in my seat. Even though we’re not officially boyfriend and girlfriend, he’s still there to comfort me when I get scared or when I cry. He’s there to calm me down when I get upset, and he’s there to share a smile when I’m happy.

“The moonless night omen is not even true. Everyone knows that…” he said confidently.

“I don’t know Senato…” I said worried with my arms crossed and my back pressed onto the back of the seat greatly.

He knew about the fact I can get easily scared when my back is exposed. I’m not afraid of the dark, horror movies or anything that people are easily afriad of. However, when my back is exposed with nothing to be pressed against on I become like a little child wanting their parents. Sometimes when some kind of situation comes up like that, he would be behind me so I can press my back against him. He also knows about my belief of omens.

“Don’t worry about it. If there’s a moonless night, don’t looked towards the sky so much… just look to the stars once in a while and that moon like figure will pass by.” He told me.

I saw Senato as a really brave soul when he told me about that. He knew that I love to see the stars in the night sky every single night. Sometimes, we both would look at the stars together even though we would talk to each other through e-mail. I sat there in front of him and smiled.

“Okay…” I replied.

“And if anything happens, you tell me…”

“Alright…”

He smiled and we both left the room together to get lunch. That was one of my happiest moments with Senato. Even though we’re technically apart in the same city, it feels as if he was with me right now. So, here I am in my room drawing different characters that are happy doing what they were doing and while I drew, I would stop and go to my laptop to speak with Senato. As I was going to finish my conversation, the phone rang. I whined and I told Senato I was going to be back so I can go get the phone. I found it weird that he didn’t reply back yet, but I didn’t wait to go get the phone. I picked it up and it was my parents, seeing how I was doing. I was happy to hear their voices once again, it was starting to bring tears to my eyes.

“Arika… there’s someone here that wants to say hi to you!” they said happily.

I growled under my breath. “If it’s Miles, I don’t want to talk to him!”

My parents sounded shock to hear me say that. “Why not, hunny?”

“I don’t like him one bit mom… trust me…”

“But I thought you two were friends!”

I knew this was going to get them mad, but I had to show them how much I despise talking to him. “WE WERE NEVER FRIENDS IN THE FIRST PLACE!”

After I yelled, silence filled the place and after a few seconds, I heard someone crying in the background. That cry was familiar and I had to be honest, I don’t care about that cry. My parents sounded very disappointed.

“We’re sorry hunny…”

I shook my head and smiled weakly. “I’m sorry mom… I didn’t have to yell, but I had to prove it that I’m not friends with that ghost maniac… I never liked him anyways…”

Me and my parents talked for a little bit and I hung up the phone. Going back to my room, I read a response from Senato. He mentioned that he heard me scream at my whoever was on the phone and he asked if I was alright. After I read that, I realized that my microphone was still on. I explained the situation and after that, Senato was also disappointed too. Although, he actually agreed to my point of view where Miles had to leave me alone since I really don’t like Miles a lot. The phone rang again and Senato didn’t respond when I told him that. I went to the phone and a familiar voice came up that made my stomach turn and my face red.

It was Senato’s voice and I felt relieved. I was surprised that he was talking to me through phone. He was doing his best to comfort me and I was happy. We talked for what seemed to be around ten to twenty minutes, but to me it felt like hours. After our little chat, we told each other to get off the computer so that we can talk to each other on the phone like this. And after a few more minutes of talking, I laid down on my bed that was next to the desk. I had to stand up and look towards the sky to see the stars. It wasn’t a moonless night, which made me feel more relaxed.

“A cresent moon…” I said softly into the phone.

“Yeah… it’s not a moonless night… you feel better now?” he asked me.

I nodded and said happily, “Yes.”

I couldn’t hang up the phone, I wanted to talk to him more, but it was starting to get late and we had to rest for tomorrow’s test. Tomorrow is going to be a moonless night and I was scared, wishing that tomorrow wouldn’t come. Suddenly, something came up.

“Do you want me to come to your place tomorrow?” Senato asked.

My stomach turned and I was so excited. “Yes!”

I was extremely happy when I heard Senato telling me he was going to come here so that he could accompany me tonight. As we finished our conversation by hanging up the phone, I had to jump to my bed and grab the pillow next to me, hugging it happily.

“He’s coming to my place! He’s coming to my place! Senato’s coming to my place!”

It was going to be me and Senato in my apartment room, and no one else. We’re going to be watching the sky together and studying together and I was so excited.

Although, I’m worried about what the moonless night will bring us…
