Year 1283 of the Aeylion calendar. In a land where the tales of heroes are born. A new chapter is about to be told.

EXT. BURNING VILLAGE. EVENING.

Fire. Fire is burning all around as a YOUNG MAN , 15 looks about to and fro frantically. He slowly begins to panic as he starts to run into houses to look for survivors. He screams out “Beatrix” and “Sophia” then finally gives up. He runs to the center of town then falls to his knees nearly breaking down. He looks up to see two figures confronting one another, one is struck down. The YOUNG MAN stares at the fallen figure who starts reaching out to him. The intensity of the flames rise and the other figure runs to the YOUNG MAN to strike him down. Everything goes black.

INT. ROOM. NIGHT.

Night time in a small village named Sipo. The YOUNG MAN wakes up from a nightmare that has been seemingly plaguing him. He gets up from his bed and sits at his windowsill staring up at the moonlit sky. A MIDDLE AGED WOMAN, 25 steps into the room.

MIDDLE AGED WOMAN
Deagan? What's wrong?

DEAGAN
I couldn't sleep.. I had that dream again..

The woman sits on the windowsill next to Deagan.

MIDDLE AGED WOMAN
Is it that same dream you've been having lately?

DEAGAN
Yeah.. Beatrix what does it mean?

BEATRIX
I can't really say, try not to think too much on it little bro.

Beatrix messes up Deagan's hair as she stands.

BEATRIX (CONT'D)
You leave for the academy tomorrow right? Wouldn't want you to miss your big day.

DEAGAN
Don't treat it as if it was my first words. I'm fifteen dammit..

BEATRIX
Fifteen or not, you're still my baby brother.

Deagan gives her a disapproving look as Beatrix laughs. Deagan gets up from the windowsill to go to bed.

DEAGAN
Hey sis?

BEATRIX
Yes?

Deagan pauses as if to search for words.

DEAGAN
Never mind.

Beatrix smiles as her brother goes to bed.

BEATRIX
Good night you little brat.

INT. DEAGAN'S ROOM. EARLY MORNING.

Deagan awakes to the early morning sun. He does a few morning exercises and is called down for breakfast. Deagan descends downstairs to be greeted by a young girl, 10.

YOUNG GIRL
Good morning big brother. Sleep well?

DEAGAN
Not really.. stayed up part of the night.. What about you?

The young sister doesn't respond but gives a sad look to her brothers eyes.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
I see.. dream about mom and that scumbag again?

The young girl furrows her brow in anger.

YOUNG GIRL
Papa wasn't a scumbag!

Deagan gives a disapproving hiss.

DEAGAN
Oh yeah? Then why did he abandon us?

Beatrix hearing this from the kitchen calls out.

BEATRIX (O.S.)
Sophia? Why don't you come help big sis set the table?

Sophia sticks out her tongue at Deagan before running off into the kitchen.

INT. KITCHEN. EARLY MORNING.

Deagan steps into the kitchen and is greeted by the pleasant smell of bacon and eggs as it is laid down upon the table.

BEATRIX
Eat up bro, you were supposed to meet Deltia and Guile ten minutes ago.

Deagan takes a seat.

DEAGAN
Don't worry about it. Knowing them, they're probably not even up yet.

Beatrix smirks and shakes her head as she sits down to enjoy the breakfast with her siblings.

SOPHIA
I had that dream about momma and papa again..

The mood at the table suddenly becomes grim as if a shadow looms over the two older siblings. Beatrix sets a hand on her sister and gives a reassuring smile.

BEATRIX
It's okay. It was only a dream.

DEAGAN
If and only it were a dream...

Beatrix glares at her brother as if daring him to say it again.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
You know it as well as I.. That scumbag abandoned us and never returned. He didn't even write to us and because of that we lost two valuable members in our family..

BEATRIX
Deagan.. please.. not now.

DEAGAN
He abandoned us sis! Mom died of a broken heart because he left and soon afterwards Melfice left us! We don't even know if our brother is still alive!

BEATRIX
Enough Deagan! I know the situation okay?

Beatrix takes a moment to gather her thoughts.

BEATRIX (CONT'D)
Go get ready..

Deagan gives a scowl to his sister and rises from his half-eaten breakfast and goes upstairs to get his belongings.

BEATRIX (V.O.)
If only you two knew..

EXT. OUTSIDE THE AVARTI HOME. EARLY MORNING.

The sisters stand on the porch of their run down home bidding their brother good bye. Deagan hefts his traveling bag over his back and secures his blade to his side. Sophia begins to shed tears.

SOPHIA
W-will you wri.. write to us b-brother?

Deagan smiles as he kneels down to hug his sister.

DEAGAN
Of course I will, what do you take me for?

BEATRIX
A selfish little brat?

Deagan stands up and gives a cocky smile to Beatrix.

DEAGAN
I may be selfish but at least I ain't an old hag

Beatrix seems steamed over her brothers insult but regains her composure. She gives him a melancholy smile as she hugs him.

BEATRIX
You take care now, you'll always have a home to come back to.

Deagan nods as Beatrix lets go of him.

DEAGAN
I know, I'll return when I become the number one graduate.

Beatrix smiles and Deagan turns to leave. She wipes away a tear that she tried so desperately to hide.

BEATRIX (O.S.)
Take care you brat.

EXT. VILLAGE OF SIPO. EARLY MORNING.

Deagan treads through the small backwater village. A smile comes across his face but it's obvious how sad he is.

DEAGAN (V.O.)
I can't wait to leave this place behind.

EXT. DELTIA'S HOUSE. MORNING.

He continues until he reaches a house that's even more run down then his own. He knocks on the weather worn door and it falls off its hinges. Deagan peeks inside but is greeted by a young man his age.

DEAGAN
I think it's time you fixed your door.

YOUNG MAN
Stow it.. c'mon in.

Deagan steps inside after setting the fallen door to the side.

DEAGAN
Don't tell me you just woke up?

YOUNG MAN
Bah.. I've been restless.. stayed up last night planning our route.. lost track of time.

DEAGAN
Deltia.. you do know we don't have to 'plan' a route.. we just gotta follow the road.

Deltia takes a moment for this piece of info to sink in before responding.

DELTIA
Damn Guile.. he misled me this whole time...

DEAGAN
Heh..

Deltia's mother walks into the room to see the two boys conversing.

DELTIA'S MOTHER
Ah, Deagan, just the person I wanted to see.

The two boys look at one another confused.

DEAGAN
Eh? Why?

DELTIA'S MOTHER
I have something for you that your mother had me hold onto.

Deagan's confused look turns into bitter sorrow.

DEAGAN
Oh..

DELTIA'S MOTHER
Wait right here dear, I'll retrieve it for you.

Deltia's mother leaves to retrieve the item. A moments pause before Deltia speaks.

DELTIA
So.. did you see Guile on your way here?

DEAGAN
No. He'll probably be here soon with some sort of lame excuse.. Go get ready man so we can go.

DELTIA
Ah, quit yer bitchin.. I'm going..

Deltia leaves and his mother returns bearing a blade. Deagan looks at the blade in awe and admiration.

DELTIA'S MOTHER
You're mother had me promise to give this to you if you ever left the village.

DEAGAN
She.. She did?

DELTIA'S MOTHER
Yes.

She hands the blade to Deagan who reluctantly takes the blade from her hands. The weight feels good in his hand as he holds it up to view it.

DEAGAN
I didn't know mom could use a sword.

DELTIA'S MOTHER
It's not hers, it belonged to your father.

Deagan immediately sets the blade down in disgust. He gives Deltia's mother an awful glare.

DEAGAN
Why didn't you say it was that scumbags blade in the first place?

DELTIA'S MOTHER
Oh pshaw.. Your father was a good man, you should learn to appreciate that.

DEAGAN
You have no idea.. keep the blade.. I don't want it.

Deltia's mother looks slightly disappointed as she takes the blade back.

DELTIA'S MOTHER
I'll hold onto it for now when you're ready.

DEAGAN
Go ahead and keep it.. I have no use for it.. My blade is fine.

DELTIA (O.S.)
Hey! Deagan! Guile's here! Let's go!

Deagan looks at Deltia's mother and gives her a curt nod.

DEAGAN
I bid you farewell Shika.

SHIKA
...you watch out for my son now..

DEAGAN
I'm sure he won't need it but I'll make sure to do so.

DELTIA (O.S.)
Get your butt out here now!

DEAGAN
Quit your bellyaching I'm coming!

Deagan leaves as Shika stands there looking at the blade.

SHIKA
He'll learn the truth someday and come to forgive you.. Aven.

She puts the blade aside and steps outside to see the boys off.

EXT. OUTSIDE DELTIA'S HOUSE. MID MORNING.

Guile, a 17 yr old large boy awaits outside with Deltia. The two look at Deagan impatiently as he comes strolling out.

DELTIA
She give you the item?

DEAGAN
Yeah, turned it down though.

GUILE
Well let's not waste any more time.

DEAGAN (V.O.)
Speak for yourself..

The trio bid farewell to Shika as they disappear off into the morning sun. Morning eventually turns to day as the travelers make their way to Elru for a rest.

EXT. OUTSKIRTS OF ELRU. DAY.

GUILE
Why are we going here? We could have just made a direct shot on over to Fort Greenclaw

DELTIA
I wish you'd think sometimes Guile.. look, Elru has a place where we can hire a stage coach to take us on a non-stop trip to Fort Greenclaw.

GUILE
Yeah so?

DELTIA
Which means.. that we get there by evening instead of three days.

Guile falls silent as the two laugh at his stupidity. They eventually cross the gates into the town and pass by a pub. Guile and Deltia walk past the establishment while Deagan stands outside the door with a sly smile on his face. The two turn to face him.

GUILE
What's up?

DEAGAN
How bout a drink?

DELTIA
You serious? Last time we attempted something like that our cover was blown.

DEAGAN
That's because Guile couldn't keep a straight face and you overdid it. I'll go in and bring it out. Being that I'm the only one here that can act like an adult.

DELTIA
Yeah, and when they see right through your crappy poker face they'll be glad to give you a pint of milk in a baby bottle.

DEAGAN
Really? Oh well, guess we'll have to hump the trail to the academy dry. You're welcome to try and get some ale yourself.

Deltia opens his mouth in response but decides against it and looks away from Deagan as he goes inside.

INT. THE DRUNKEN HORSE. DAY.

Deagan enters the pub to see the dimly lit atmosphere and it's unwelcoming inhabitants staring at him as light from the outside pours in. He keeps his cool as he closes the door behind him and is greeted by a pretty bar maid a little older then himself.

BAR MAID
Heya cutie, welcome to The Drunken Horse, I'm Jessi.

DEAGAN
I'm De- ...Deven..

JESSI
Nice to meet ya Deven! Right this way.

Jessi leads Deagan to the counter and sits next to him looking him up and down.

JESSI (CONT'D)
What's a good looking guy like yourself doing in a place like this?

Deagan looks at Jessi and immediately figures out that the girl is flirting with him. He takes a moment to think up an excuse.

DEAGAN
Just got off work at the stables.. needed to relax.. that's all.

JESSI
Fair enough.

She runs her fingers up his arm that makes Deagan rather uncomfortable.

DEAGAN
Uh.. er..

JESSI
Tee hee! The Bartender should be up from the cellar soon.

DEAGAN
R-Right..

Deagan breaks eye contact with Jessi and a call for her is heard from across the room.

JESSI
I'll be seeing ya, maybe we can get together later?

DEAGAN
Uh.. um.. s-sure..

Jessi winks at him.

JESSI
Great!

She goes off to meet with the patron and Deagan lets out a sigh of relief. He looks about the bar and sees the people are no longer giving him nasty stares. He returns his gaze to behind the bar to see the owner standing in front of him eying him skeptically.

BARTENDER
What'll ya have?

DEAGAN
Brandy.. three of em..

The bartender raises an eyebrow and looks at his stock.

BARTENDER
Jessi! I need yer 'elp luggin up some of the stock!

JESSI (O.S.)
Right Boss.

The bartender and Jessi go to the back room to pick up some of Deagan's order. Deagan turns to look at the inhabitants again and sees one of the patrons looking at him with a glare. The figure stands and walks over to him in a drunken state.

DRUNK
The hell is a kid like you doing in a place like this?

DEAGAN
...I'm not looking for trouble..

DRUNK
Sure you are ya little punk.. moseying in here like you own the place.. flirtin with Jessi like you've known her yer whole life.. I hate people like you..

DEAGAN
Look.. I'm warning you to back off..

DRUNK
Do you know who I am kid?

DEAGAN
Just another drunk looking for a fight?

DRUNK
Name's Spike DuLang.. I'm head of the Thieves Guild.

DEAGAN
There's a surprise....

SPIKE
Hmph.. go back to yer mother kid.. a whore like her should watch troubled kids like yo-

Spike is struck in the nose and knocked off balance as Deagan stands to meet him.

DEAGAN
You wanted trouble now you got it...

SPIKE
Aww.. the kid doesn't like me talking about his mommy!

Deagan gives Spike a death glare but Spike merely laughs as he wipes away the blood dripping down his nose. He pulls out a dagger.

SPIKE
You broke my nose kid.. Congrats on that.. but you're gonna have to pay for that.

DEAGAN
Bring it you drunk.. I ain't afraid of you.

SPIKE
You should be kid.. you should be..

Spike lunges forward towards Deagan who nimbly ducks out of the way and lands a jab at the attackers stomach. Spike grabs Deagan by the collar and throws him off to the side. Deagan recovers quickly and grabs the attackers arm and manages to change the trajectory of where it would have originally landed. Spike retracts his arm and punches Deagan in the side causing him to lose balance. Deagan looks up and sees Spike trying to land a kick to his injured side. He blocks the kick and manages to disarm the dagger from Spike and quickly gets on the offensive. The bartender and Jessi return from the back room and a scream from Jessi emits as Deagan cuts off the right ear of his attacker then follows up with a jab to his left eye. Spike screams.

SPIKE
ARGH!!! YOU SONUVA b***h!!! I'LL KILL YOU!!

Deagan drops the dagger and immediately heads to the door. He takes a quick glance at Jessi and gives her an apologetic nod and bursts out the door.

GUILE
Where's the booze?

DEAGAN
Not now, just run!

Deagan bolts off in the direction of the stable. Guile and Deltia look at one another and bolt off after him.

EXT. ELRULIAN STABLE. DAY.

The trio come to a halt at the front breathing heavily. They take a moment to breath when Guile speaks up.

GUILE
More adult then us?! What in the hell did you do in there?

DELTIA
Yeah.. did you just go in and piss off the first person you saw?

DEAGAN
They came to me alright..

DELTIA
And you obliged them?

DEAGAN
Look.. you would have to be there to understand..

GUILE
Whatever man.. let's just get the coach and go.

INT. ELRULIAN STABLE. DAY.

The trio go inside the stable and make note of the stench. They hear the stable master in the back.

DEAGAN
Excuse the intrusion.. May we speak with you?

A middle aged man steps out from behind his work place. He eyes the three and approaches.

STABLE MASTER
What can I do for you boys?

DELTIA
We'd like to hire a carriage

The man takes a moment to think.

STABLE MASTER
Alright then, I'll have it ready within the hour.

DEAGAN
(Bowing)
Thank you kindly

The stable goes to the horses and brings with him two and disappears behind the stable.

EXT. FRONT OF STABLE. MID DAY.

The trio decide to wait in front. Time passes by slowly as the day slowly begins to turn to mid day.

DELTIA
'Within the hour' my a**...

GUILE
This guy better have a good reason for making us wait so long..

DEAGAN
Don't worry so much about it.. we'll make it in time.

GUILE
You sure?

DEAGAN
You worry to much..

DELTIA
You don't worry at all

They sit there in silence then Deagan speaks up.

DEAGAN
I've been having this dream lately.

DELTIA
Dreaming eh?

DEAGAN
Yeah.. not a nice dream either.. more like a nitemare.

GUILE
Of what?

DEAGAN
Our village.

DELTIA
What do you see?

DEAGAN
It starts off with me coming over the hill that overlooks the village. The bodies of everyone we know lie strewn about the area. I then start to look for survivors and when I can't find any I head to the center of the village where my house is and find it ablaze as well. Then I see two people fighting each other. One is defeated and I can't help but stare at this person. Before I know I'm being attacked by the victor and before this person can strike me I wake up.

Guile and Deltia look at one another.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
What do you suppose it means?

Deltia slaps him on the shoulder and gives him a smile.

DELTIA
Nothing I'd worry about, it's just a dream.

DEAGAN
Yeah but..

GUILE
C'mon now, let's not worry about stuff like that now. Let's focus on getting to Fort Greenclaw.

DEAGAN
Yeah.. right...

Deagan starts to stare off into space.

DELTIA
What's up?

DEAGAN
It's nothing, look here comes the stable master.

The stable master comes up to the boys who wipe dirt off them and beckons them around to the back. A small but sturdy carriage await them and they climb in and are soon on their way. Carriage goes down a long road to the destination of the academy as mid day turns to evening.

(CONT'D) (V.O.)
We made it to the Academy and began our training to become better warriors. Within a few weeks Guile dropped out of the school. He said that he felt that he was wasting his time there with all the lessons on tactics and leadership; he wanted to fight, not march another army into Kelsiv. He was shortly followed by Deltia, predictably because of all of the authority around here; he tried to lie and pass it off as a case of the school being too good for him. I haven't heard much from them since. A year later and my swordsmanship has improved immensely. However, all that training never prepared me for what was to come… it all started with a letter.

INT. INSIDE THE ACADEMY DORM. MORNING

Deagan is sitting on his bed polishing his blade. A year has passed and he looks a little more mature then he did then. He is interrupted with a knock. He sets the polished blade down and answers the door.

DEAGAN
Yes?

OLD MAN
Mail call lad, you got one here from your sister I do believe.

DEAGAN
Thanks Edgar..

EDGAR
Something troubling you son?

DEAGAN
Huh? oh.. no sir, just thinking.

EDGAR
Don't let it get to your head lad.

DEAGAN
I won't sir.

The old man bids farewell to Deagan and he closes the door behind him as he goes to his bed he opens the letter.

BEATRIX (V.O.)
Hello little brother. It's been awhile since your last letter so I thought I'd write you instead of wait. Things are going smooth here for the most part but Sophia has gotten ill. I worry for her. She's been asking to see you. If you get any free time come and visit will you? Well, write soon or drop by.. Beatrix.

Deagan rereads the letter silently. His eyes going over the letter carefully and his expressions turns to that of concern.

DEAGAN (V.O.)
Ill.. hmm.. Might as well go visit.. gives me some time to get out of this place for a bit.

Deagan leaves his room and treks down the hallway until he reaches the room of his master.

INT. ROOM OF MASTER. MORNING.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
Master? Might I have a word?

MASTER
Of course, what might I do for you?

Deagan steps out of the hallway and enters his masters room.

DEAGAN
I was wondering if I could take my leave for awhile. I received word from my elder sister saying that our younger sister is ill.

MASTER
Go.

Deagan looks a bit confused as his master gives in to his plead.

DEAGAN
Master?

MASTER
Didn't you hear me? Go, before I change my mind.

Deagan bows to his master and leaves the room.

MASTER (CONT'D) (O.S.)
Family is more important then fighting lad, remember that always.

Deagan returns to his room and gathers what few belongings he has. He straps on his leather gauntlets and pulls on a pair of full leather greaves. He slips on a leather vest then straps his blade to his back. He checks himself over carefully to make sure everything is in place. When satisfied he puts on his cloak and positions his blade in a easy to reach place in case the worse were to happen on his way to Sipo. He looks around his room to make sure he isn't missing anything. It looked as empty as it did when he first arrived. He slips on his hood and exits his dorm to the front of the building.

EXT. SLEEPING QUARTERS. MORNING.

WARRIOR
Going somewhere Deagan?

DEAGAN
Yeah, Master Preston gave me permission. I'm going home for a little while.

WARRIOR
Ah.. then take one of our stallions. It should make your journey a little easier.

DEAGAN
(Bowing)
Thank you sir.

Deagan goes to the stable to get his stallion.

EXT. SIPO STABLES. EVENING.

After half a day of travel, Deagan manages to reach the outskirts of Sipo with no trouble. He dismounts, and starts to walk towards the stables. The sound of silence convince him that perhaps someone had died, and his heart yearns to see his younger sister, fearing that it might have been her.

DEAGAN (CONT'D) (V.O.)
Be well Sophia..

As he stifles a tear and sniffs, the foul smell of sulfur chokes his lungs. A slight glow broke through the darkening evening causes Deagan to drop the reins on his horse and jog towards the town. As he starts to hear the sizzle of a fire, he broke into full run. He climbs a hill that overlooks the village to find his nightmare had come true.

DEAGAN (CONT'D) (V.O.)
What is this!

He races down the hill into town and looks to his left then to his right and finds nothing but bodies littering the ground, all unarmed and stabbed in the back.

DEAGAN (CONT'D) (V.O.)
Who would do something like this!?

EXT. AVARTI RESIDENCE. EVENING.

Deagan desperately runs towards his house, sword in hand. There, he finds his elder sister engaged in a fight with a shrouded figure.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
Beatrix!!

Beatrix knocks her opponent back and stares at Deagan with bewilderment.

BEATRIX
Stay back!! This man is dangerous!!

DEAGAN
But I can fight too!!

Deagan readies his blade and charges.

BEATRIX
Deagan no!!!

The shrouded figure notices Deagan charging wildly at him and takes this opportunity to strike him down. He jumps up and brings his sword to a stabbing motion. Deagan notices this and closes his eyes tight and waits to embrace death but is stopped when the spatter of blood splashes his face. He opens his eyes and sees the blade of his enemy jutting out of his sisters center. The trajectory of the unknown assailant was knocked off center and pushed off to the side. The shrouded figures enough is enough and vanishes leaving no trace of his whereabouts and Beatrix falls to her knees into Deagan's arms. She looks up at him and smiles weakly.

BEATRIX
You.. s-stubborn...b-b-brat....

Sophia comes out of her hiding place and runs to Beatrix crying madly. Deagan shakes in disbelief of what he sees. Beatrix raises her hands and gently brushes away the tears of Sophia then shifts her hand to Deagan and brushes his bangs away.

DEAGAN
Sis.. I'm.. I'm s-sorry.

BEATRIX
Don't.. You're g-gonna h-h-have to watch.. o-our little.. s-sis now..

SOPHIA
Please don't die! Please!!

BEATRIX
My..my.. time has come.. b-brother... When you are ... of age... seek...seek out a sailor.. by the n-name of Har...Harken... t-then.. sail.. to the..to the...the...

DEAGAN
To the what? Where? Why? Beatrix? Beatrix!!?

Beatrix stares up at the two siblings lifeless. Sophia bursts out in sorrow as Deagan closes the eyes of Beatrix. Rain begins to fall as Deagan buries his face into the shoulder of Beatrix. He retracts and Sophia gives him a sad expression as Deagan returns it with a stoic look. Sophia doesn't realize the tears Deagan cries are hidden by falling rain drops. Deagan gently lays his fallen sisters head down and proceeds to dig graves for the villagers. Hours pass as dawn breaks over the horizon. Deagan and Sophia stand over the newly erected grave site and pay their last respects to their sister before disembarking. Deagan marches down the road with the same stoic look with his little sister in his arms and Beatrix's blade on his belt.

SOPHIA
Where are we gonna go?

Deagan doesn't answer right away as he heads to the still standing stables.

DEAGAN
I don't know...

The two siblings wander aimlessly. It doesn't take to long for them to find a farm.

SOPHIA
Brother.. I'm tired..

DEAGAN
I am too.. let's rest here for now..

INT. BARN. EARLY MORNING.

The siblings sneak quietly into the barn and climb up into the loft and soon find themselves drifting into a slumber. Deagan stays awake to ponder their next move. He stops when he hears the barn doors opening and a girl his age stepping in. He watches her closely.

GIRL (O.S.)
Hello Makar, ready for our morning flight?

DEAGAN (V.O.)
Flight? Is she a Pegasus knight?

Deagan watches further as the girl gets the reins for a white stallion with wings. A slight blush overcomes Deagan. Then fear overtakes him when Sophia kicks over a bucket causing the girl to shoot her attention to the loft.

GIRL (O.S.)
H-Hello?

DEAGAN (V.O.)
Dammit.. Not good..

Deagan peers over the edge slightly and immediately regrets it as the girl looks up and makes eye contact. They stare at one another for a few seconds then the girl screams.

GIRL
Thief!!

The girl runs out of the barn in a frantic manner.

DEAGAN
Not good at all...

A few minutes pass and Deagan peeks his head back over the ledge only to be pulled down the dirt floor. A man, seemingly in his late thirties with a full beard, stands over him with a quarter staff in hand. The fall knocks Deagan unconscious.

INT. SMALL ROOM. DAY.

Deagan wakes up to find himself in another room but is alarmed when he finds the girl he saw early hovering over him. He panics and sits up quickly and finds himself unintentionally locking lips with the stunned girl. She pulls away from him with a slight tinge of red on her cheeks and she stands from her spot and faces away from Deagan.

GIRL (O.S.)
F-Father! That boy is awake!

DEAGAN (V.O.)
Great..

The man that knocked Deagan unconscious earlier walks in with a empowering presence. He stares into Deagan's eyes and it sends a chill down his back.

MAN
Melani, go and tend to that girl Sophia. I wish to speak privately with this boy.

MELANI
Y-yes father..

Melani looks back at Deagan and leaves the room.

MAN
Now.. tell me what you were doing in my barn boy.

Deagan merely sits there and stares at him.

MAN (CONT'D)
Answer me boy! Otherwise I'll throw you on the mercy of the militia!

Deagan immediately sits up straight and answers.

DEAGAN
I was looking for a place to sleep sir! My sister is sick and I feared for her health.. we were just gonna stay for a few hours until we got to the city...

The man's hardened expression softens when he hears this.

MAN
I see.. Excuse me for my rudeness.. I was unaware of the circumstances.

DEAGAN
It's alright sir.. it was only natural to react in such a manner.

The man sighs and a soft smile comes on his face.

MAN
I'm Joseph Delgetty, tell me, what are children such as yourselves wandering about? Where is your home?

Deagan's expression becomes blank as his head sinks. Joseph looks at the young boy questioningly then it hits him.

JOSEPH
Tell me.. You wouldn't happen to be from Sipo now?

Deagan looks up at Joseph with a pain expression then nods.

JOSEPH
I see.. I recently just returned from there. I've seen the devastation that you went through boy..

DEAGAN
Deagan...

JOSEPH
My apologies, Deagan.

DEAGAN
If.. you don't mind me asking.. what were you doing in
Sipo?

JOSEPH
I was on my way to pay a visit to an old friend. Shika Delgar, would you happen to know her?

Deagan nods sadly.

DEAGAN
She was the Mother to one of my good friends..

Joseph nods and sighs.

JOSEPH
I see..

Joseph takes a moment to think.

JOSEPH (CONT'D)
Do you have anywhere to go Deagan?

DEAGAN
......No

Joseph gives a warm smile.

JOSEPH
I would feel awful throwing you back out into the world.. How about you stay with us?

DEAGAN
Sir?

JOSEPH
Please, call me Joseph, I'll let you stay with us, we happen to have a few extra rooms.

Deagan takes a few minutes to think about the offer. Then hesitantly accepts.

DEAGAN
I'll.. I'll take you up on your offer si- ....Joseph.

JOSEPH
Good, there is a few conditions though.

DEAGAN
What is that?

JOSEPH
You'll have to help out with the farm, my girls are helpful but there are a few things that they themselves are incapable of doing and I'm starting to feel my age.

DEAGAN
Done.

JOSEPH
Also.. if I catch you doing 'anything' with my daughters.. I'll have you thrown out regardless of what I said earlier.

Deagan gives Joseph a nervous look then nods.

DEAGAN
You got it sir.

Joseph gives a curt nod and opens the door to have Melani and two other girls fall into the room.

JOSEPH
Hmm.. I take it you've been listening?

GIRL 1
Sorry father..

GIRL 2
Curious is all.

Melani doesn't say anything as she looks at her father.

JOSEPH
Right, introduce yourselves then. I'm going to attend to Ms. Sophia.

Joseph steps over the bundle of his daughters and exits the room. Deagan sits at the edge of the bed he's on and looks at the girls who are now standing.

GIRL 1
Alright then, I'm Leila Delgetty, I'm th-

GIRL 2
Snooty older sister of us.

Leila gives a deathly glare.

GIRL 2
I'm Natasha, nice to meet you and I'm sure you know my twin Melani.

Twin was right, the only difference that Deagan was able to point out was that Natasha had shorter hair and the lightness of the eyes. He looks at Melani who shyly waves at him. He returns it. A silence falls then the girls gather around him.

LEILA
What happened exactly? Father said something happened in Sipo. What exactly?

Deagan falls quiet. The girls look eager to find out what happened so Deagan tells them.

DEAGAN
Yesterday, my village was attacked and everyone I knew was killed.

The girls are now silent. Leila looks almost as if she regretted asking him. Melani, however, looks guilty.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
Are you alright?

MELANI
H-Huh? Oh.. yes, I just r-regret calling you a thief..

DEAGAN
You didn't even know.. don't worry about it.

Deagan stands and the girls make room for him to walk by.

NATASHA
Where you going?

Deagan halts at the doorway. He turns to face them.

DEAGAN
I'm gonna check on my sister. If you guys have any chores for me to do, feel free to tell me.

Deagan leaves the room and the girls begin to converse.

NATASHA
He's a nice looking guy.

LEILA
Given up on that Guile fellow now huh?

NATASHA
Oh please! That buffoon hasn't even written me at all, whatever 'thing' we had is over with. Besides, we have a nice boy living with us now.

MELANI
S-Sister! We really shouldn't push things like this upon him.. He's been through so much.

NATASHA
He'll get over it.

LEILA
How can you say such a thing!

NATASHA
..whatever, c'mon! Let's load him up with some chores!

Natasha quickly leaves the room leaving her sisters to talk.

MELANI
I fear for his well being.

LEILA
As do I.. I'll keep a watch on her, you keep Deagan close.

Melani turns slightly red when hearing her suggestion.

MELANI
M-Maybe you.. maybe you should...

Leila smiles.

LEILA
You'll be fine..

She gets up then whispers teasingly in her ear.

LEILA (CONT'D)
Who knows? Maybe he'll like you back.

MELANI
Leila!

Leila giggles to herself and exits the room. Melani is left in the the room blushing three shades of red. Meanwhile, Deagan is successful in finding his sister and Joseph.

JOSEPH
You're lucky to be here Ms. Sophia

SOPHIA
I have my brother to thank..

JOSEPH
That you do.

DEAGAN
How are you feeling sis?

JOSEPH
Ah! Deagan, I was just about to go and fetch you.

DEAGAN
Mhmm.. well I'm here.

SOPHIA
Are we really staying here brother?

DEAGAN
Yes, until we're able to afford accommodations of our own.

JOSEPH
You may stay as long as you need.

DEAGAN
Thank you again.

JOSEPH
Come, I'll assign you your chores.

Deagan nods as he gives his sister a quick kiss on the forehead. He then follows Joseph out of the room. They walk into what seems to be the kitchen. Deagan sits down at the table while Joseph retrieves what looks to be a chart.

JOSEPH
Let's see here.. We'll start you off slow so you can get
into the swing of things.

Deagan nodded and looked at the list of chores.

JOSEPH
Let's see, we can have you work with Melani. She can use the help.

DEAGAN
Alright.

JOSEPH
Let's see.. morning chores include: tending to the livestock, collecting eggs and cleaning the livestock stalls.

Deagan's face sorta sunk, he did this back when his parents were still alive but had to sell everything when they died. It's been awhile.

DEAGAN
Alright, what about the afternoon chores?

JOSEPH
Melani will tell you, just follow what she says.

Deagan nods and stands.

DEAGAN
I'll get started right away then sir.

Deagan leaves the kitchen and exits the home. He takes a minute to examine the beautiful landscape. He took this land for granted when he was living at home and it shows as his expression saddens. He looks off to the barn and sees Melani entering it. He walks over to the barn and opens the door.

INT. DELGETTY BARN. MORNING.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
Hello? uh.. Melani correct?

Melani jumped upon hearing Deagan speak. She turned and met his gaze and turned a shade of pink.

MELANI
Oh! I'm sorry.. I.. Didn't realize that you'd be helping me.

DEAGAN
I'd be helping your father but he said that I should start slow and help you.

MELANI
I-Is that so?

Deagan nodded. He was unaware of Melani's blush as he walked over to the livestock.

DEAGAN
So I'll just let the horses out into the field and get to milking the cows..

MELANI
S-sure..

An awkward silence follows as Deagan unhitches the gate to the horses and releases them out to graze in the fields. He returns to where the cows are held and turns to Melani.

DEAGAN
Uh.. where are the buckets kept?

Melani didn't reply verbally but instead points to what seems to be a shed. Deagan nods and ventures over to it.

MELANI (V.O.)
Why are you acting like this.. just.. think of him as a farmhand..

Melani looks over at Deagan who gives her a warm smile. She blushes a deep red and turns to hide her face as he passes by her.

MELANI (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Pull yourself together..

She swallows her hesitation and goes to the shed to retrieve a basket and starts to collect the eggs from a chicken coop outside the barn. She begins to calm down as she finishes up. She steps out of the coop but her leg catch the side of the coop door and she trips. She closes her eyes but instead of meeting the ground she falls into the arms of Deagan.

DEAGAN
You ok?

Melani opens her eyes and looks up at him and resumes her shade of red.

MELANI
Y-Yes.. I'm f-fine.. thank you

Deagan simply smiles as he helps her regain her stance. He goes back to a serious face.

DEAGAN
Take it easy ok?

MELANI
O-ok..

DEAGAN
Oh.. yeah and.. sorry about scaring you this morning, I had no intentions.

MELANI
Please don't worry about that.. it's in the past now.

Deagan nodded and with that the two returned to work. Melani eventually started growing used to Deagan's presence and gained more confidence and she held small conversations. Eventually they grew more comfortable with one another. The day eventually comes to an end.

DEAGAN (V.O.)
After I met Melani and her family, time sort of flew. Sophia recovered from her illness and announced that she wanted to become a mage. Everyone laughed at her and said it was an admirable goal. She stormed out of the room with steam coming out of her ears. Apparently she was serious about it because she didn't speak to any of us for the entire day. Despite everything that has happened, the more time I spend with Melani, I thank Ellendall for giving me another chance. After the incident with Spike and then the mysterious being that murdered Beatrix, I was starting to lose my sanity, but this family has brought me back from the darkness. I almost believed that I could just forget about the cloaked man and Spike and live here with this family as a brother and not just as a guest... that's what I wanted to believe but fate twisted things for me again. It started with a picnic in the hills around Elru. Beatrix, I hope you're watching over me, because I think I'll need it more than ever. What was his name again? All I remember is that it started with an "H."

EXT. ELRU PLAINS. DAY.

The Delgetty family and the two Avarti siblings are taking a day to relax on a partly-cloudy day. They are out on a picnic enjoying themselves.

JOSEPH
More bread Sophia?

SOPHIA
No thanks! I'm full, sir.

LEILA
I'll take some father.

JOSEPH
Here you go.

He hands the piece of bread to Leila who breaks off a piece then he turns to Deagan.

JOSEPH (CONT'D)
Deagan?

Deagan doesn't reply as he stares at a letter and then into the cloudy blue sky. Sophia runs off to chase a butterfly and runs in the grass.

JOSEPH (CONT'D)
Deagan! What's so damn important about that letter? Stop reading it and join in on the feast!

Deagan looks a little relieved but gloomy as he faces Joseph.

DEAGAN
It's a letter from my master - my former master - at the Academy. I'm now officially dropped from their roster.

Melani looks at Deagan, concern in her eyes.

MELANI
Are you sure that's what you want? I'm sure that they'd be happy to hold a place for you.

Deagan returns her look of concern with a melancholy smile.

DEAGAN
No. Can't stand going back there after what happened. I need to tend to Sophia anyways. She needs me. Before she died, my older sister told me to seek out a man if I ever need help. I may have to find him one of these days. Anyways, they say that they'd keep the gear I left back there tucked away until I go back and pick it up.

He looks at Joseph.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
Permission to take a horse and go tomorrow, sir?

JOSEPH
Go ahead. Head out tomorrow at noon. I'll have some errands for you to run in the city. I was thinking about sending Leila, but since you'd be heading there, you can knock out two birds with one stone.

Deagan nods. He lies back on the blanket that has been laid down and looks up at the clear sky. Melani appears overhead and smiles down at him. Deagan sits up.

MELANI
Go with me on a walk?

DEAGAN
Sure.

Deagan got up and brushed himself off and went off with Melani.

JOSEPH (V.O.)
Heh.. I know I said he better not do anything with any of my daughters but.. I hope my little girl can make him hers.. she seems a lot more happy when he's around.

LEILA
Father? Are you alright?

JOSEPH
H-Huh? Oh, sorry just thinking.

NATASHA
You're up to something aren't you?

Joseph raises his hands in defense.

JOSEPH
Not at all.

They share a laugh. Meanwhile, Deagan and Melani hike up to a large hill where a large tree gives off plenty of shade. They sit underneath it and look out into the sea of grass.

MELANI
Ah.. I'm so glad we came out to do this.

DEAGAN
Yeah.

Melani looks at Deagan who seems to be very distant.

MELANI
Are you ok?

Deagan snaps out of his trance.

DEAGAN
Yeah, just thinking about what my elder sister said.. right before she died.

MELANI
Oh.. I see.. if you don't mind me asking.. what is it she said?

DEAGAN
“When you are of age, seek out a sailor”

MELANI
What do you suppose it means?

DEAGAN
I don't know.. I've tried to remember who the sailor was cause I thought he might know what she meant by the last part she said.. which was to sail somewhere..

MELANI
Where?

DEAGAN
I.. I don't know.. she died before she could tell me.

Melani quiets down then she puts on a bold move she didn't even think she was capable of. She leans her head on Deagan's shoulder and wraps her arm around his. Deagan tries to hide his embarrassment by looking away but is drawn in to look at Melani who also looks up at him. They stare into one another's eyes and slowly start to lean in towards each other. However, their moment is broken by the obnoxious voice of Natasha.

NATASHA
Hey you two! We're packing up now! Hurry up!

Deagan and Melani quickly separate from one another and turn to face Natasha. Deagan stands and walks past her. Natasha looks at her sister.

NATASHA (CONT'D)
Is something wrong with him?

She's only met with a deathly glare. They return to the Delgetty household and day turns to evening. Deagan lays in his bed thinking on the words of his sister.

INT. DEAGAN'S ROOM. LATE NIGHT.

DEAGAN (V.O.)
Damn.. why can't I remember.. was it a person? Or was it a place? Dammit..

He ponders through the night and eventually succumbs to slumber. As morning dawns, Deagan awakes and gets himself ready for his trip into Elru then eventually Fort Greenclaw. When he's satisfied with his gear he walks out into the kitchen to find the rest of the household awake.

INT. DELGETTY KITCHEN. EARLY MORNING.

JOSEPH
Ah, you're awake.

DEAGAN
Yes, sorry, just preparing myself for the trip.

Natasha eyes him up and down.

NATASHA
I think you may have overdid it.. It's not like your gonna be attacked by bandit or something, it's just a straight shot to Elru from here.

DEAGAN
Yeah, but you forget that I'm also going to Fort Greenclaw to turn in my resignation.

NATASHA
Ah.. right.

JOSEPH
Alright, Deagan, I need you to do three things for me.

DEAGAN
Yes, what is it?

JOSEPH
I need you to pick up a package for me at the Alchemist shop, then go to the granary and order some new feed for the girls Pegasi. Afterwards, I need you to pick up something for the girls.

DEAGAN
Er... ok.

JOSEPH
I need you to stop by the tailor and pick up their Pegasi uniform. I asked him to make it for the girls since the Pegasus training facility couldn't issue enough.

LEILA
I could pick that up father.

JOSEPH
No, I need you here today.

He turns back to Deagan.

JOSEPH
Don't dilly dawdle.. we have something planned for you today.

NATASHA
Yep, don't be late either!

Deagan raises a brow at everyone. He smiles in the end. Melani suddenly stands.

MELANI
Um.. here, something for you to use.

She hands him what seems to be a leather traveling pack.

MELANI (CONT'D)
It should make your task today a little easier.

NATASHA
Yep, she's stayed up this whole week making it!

Melani bites down on her bottom lip shyly. He smiles at her and gives her a hug. She blushes a bright pink.

DEAGAN
Thanks Mel, I'll treasure it.

With that he bids farewell to them all. He heads to the stable and picks out a horse he had been riding since he began living here. He rides off in the direction of Elru. He stops at the all to familiar stable.

EXT. ELRU STABLE. MORNING.

STABLE MASTER
Ah, Deagan, doing something for Joseph I see.

JOSEPH
Yeah, just some tasks then gonna turn in my resignation at the academy.

STABLE MASTER
That so? Heh, well good luck to ya then, I'll keep your horse here stabled until you complete your tasks.

DEAGAN
Thanks.

Deagan makes his first stop at the Alchemist shop. He enters and is blown away by an awful smell. He tries to brush it away but fails. He walks up to the counter.

INT. ALCHEMIST SHOP. MORNING.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
Hello? Is there anyone there?

VOICE (O.S.)
Just a minute! I'll be right there.

Deagan stands by patiently when an elderly man steps out from the back room.

ELDERLY MAN
So what can I do for you today?

DEAGAN
I'm here to pick something up for Joseph Delgetty.

ELDERLY MAN
Ah yes! Just a minute.

The man disappears into the back room then a few seconds later reemerges with a book in hand.

ELDERLY MAN (CONT'D)
Here you are m'boy “Basic Magic, level 1,” I honestly don't see why Master Joseph would need this, he was once a Military Tactician for the Veran military.

DEAGAN
That so?

He takes the book from the man and looks at it's cover.

DEAGAN (V.O.)
I guess he's gonna teach Sophia

He smiles. He pays the men then turns to leave the store.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
Thank you sir.

He exits the building then makes his way over to the tailor. He enters the building. He exits with three neatly wrapped packages that he puts away in his new satchel. He smiles at Melani's gift then moves on to the granary. He's met by a Pegasi knight in training who agrees to bring over a few sacks of grain. His tasks done he returns to the stable.

STABLE MASTER
Back so soon?

DEAGAN
Yeah, there weren't many tasks to perform so I breezed through it pretty fast.

STABLE MASTER
Ah, so off to Fort Greenclaw?

DEAGAN
Yes sir.

STABLE MASTER
Ah, well I'll let you know that it'll be raining later. Might want to make your business there quick if you want to make it home dry.

Deagan nods as he mounts his steed.

DEAGAN
I'll be sure to do that sir.

Deagan gives a gentle kick into his steed and he's off. He takes the quickest path he can. The morning is slowly turning into mid-day. He can see the entrance gate that leads up to the academy but also notices a man standing there as if waiting for someone. He approaches at a slow rate and cautiously dismounts. The figure he saw from a distance becomes clear and his heart nearly sinks.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE GATES OF THE ACADEMY. LATE AFTERNOON.

SPIKE
It's about time you showed up.

A wicked smile creeps across Spikes face upon seeing Deagan's reaction. He points to his now closed and scarred left eye.

SPIKE (CONT'D)
You caused me a lot of suffering boy.

He then cocks his head to the right.

SPIKE (CONT'D)
My hearing also ain't what it used to be.

He eyed Deagan. His eyes dangerously flickering.

SPIKE (CONT'D)
I've been keeping tabs on you boy. I could have struck at any time when my spies finally found you.. but under the circumstances of my current employer.. I've been held at bay..

Deagan is in disbelief

DEAGAN
Who?

SPIKE
Now what kind of person would I be if I revealed the name of my employer? Heh, to tell you the truth I was surprised myself..

DEAGAN
Stow it.. what do you want?

Spike gives a an obvious fake shocked looked.

SPIKE
You wound me! I only come here to talk.. propose a deal.

DEAGAN
That's a load of bull.. what do you really want?

Spike then gives a devious smile. His scars only making him more devilish.

SPIKE
I want what was lost.. but seeing as that is impossible.. I've come to take it away from the person who took it from me.

Deagan slowly reaches for his blade.

SPIKE (CONT'D)
Heh-heh.. You were lucky last time.. I was tipsy.. I'm sober now and fully aware of my surroundings.

DEAGAN
And I was a foolish boy and have learned more since our last encounter. I probably won't have to lift a finger though since I was only a rookie at swordsmanship when I beat you.

Spike gives him sneer and draws his own blade.

SPIKE
You'll regret those words boy..

Deagan draws his blade.

DEAGAN
Come at me then. Let's see what I do to you this time.

Spike looses what self-restraint he had left and lunges at Deagan. His blade aligned directly for Deagan's heart. Deagan side-steps and knocks Spike off balance with a shoulder thrust. Spike recovers by swinging his blade awkwardly at an upward angle nearly taking Deagan's head off. The sound of battle is heard by the Mearite soldiers patrolling the compound. They see Deagan and Spike going at one another's throats. They surround the two.

CAPTAIN
Surrender your weapons and give yourselves up willingly!

The two look at each other bitterly. Deagan complies and sticks his blade into the ground. Spike on the other hand had different plans.

SPIKE
Try and make me..

The soldiers close in on Spike and eventually detain him. One soldier is gravely wounded while another is killed in the struggle. They bring Spike into custody and the remaining soldiers turn their attention to Deagan.

CAPTAIN
What was happening here.. don't lie.

DEAGAN
I was on my way here to turn in my resignation from the academy.

CAPTAIN
Is this true?

VOICE (O.S.)
Yes, leave him be Geoffrey.. I'll take care of him.

GEOFFREY
Sir!

The soldiers leave the two figures to speak.

DEAGAN
It's been awhile Master Preston..

PRESTON
It has.. I thought I gave permission for only a year.

He laughs.

PRESTON (CONT'D)
Come.. it's about to rain.

As if on cue. Rain begins to fall. Preston beckons Deagan inside.

INT. PRESTONS OFFICE. LATE AFTERNOON.

Preston digests the information that Deagan has given him about the recently detained Spike, his village, the passing of his sister, her last words and where he currently resides. His face is grim as he turns to face Deagan.

PRESTON
I see.. you have been through a lot since the day I let you go.

Deagan sinks his head in sadness.

DEAGAN
Yes sir..

PRESTON
Please.. You may call me Preston now.

DEAGAN
Yes si- ...Preston.

PRESTON
Now.. your sister.. you say she left you with some last words that have been troubling you correct?

DEAGAN
Yes..

PRESTON
She told you to seek something? Was this a person or a thing?

DEAGAN
I can't recall sir.. it's been so long that her words have become blurry to the mind.. but all I can remember is that she told me to seek something out.

PRESTON
I see..

Preston begins to dwell on the subject.

PRESTON (CONT'D)
What do you plan to do?

Deagan is quiet and goes into thought.

DEAGAN
..since Spike has been keeping tabs on me.. I fear for the safety of my new found family.. I'd only be putting them in unnecessary danger if I stayed.. I think it's time I went to search for what my sister wanted me to find.

PRESTON
I see.. so you'll leave the family then?

DEAGAN
I have no other choice.. it's the safest option I got to protect them.

PRESTON
Alright then.

DEAGAN
Do you think you can do something for me? One last request?

Preston smiles.

PRESTON
Don't worry lad. I'll tell them in your stead.

DEAGAN
Thank you mas- Preston

Deagan reaches into his satchel and pulls out the book and the uniforms he picked up later today and hands them to Preston.

DEAGAN (CONT'D)
This was just something I was told to bring back but since I can't.. would you mind taking it?

PRESTON
I'd be glad to. Now.. since we're exchanging.. I want you to have something.

He goes over to his mantle which holds a beautiful scabbard. He removes it and hands it to Deagan.

PRESTON (CONT'D)
I want you to have this.

DEAGAN
Preston.. I.. I couldn't..

PRESTON
Nonsense! I want you to have it. It has been my honor to know another Avarti. I insist you have it.

Deagan hesitantly takes the scabbard. He notices that the blade that accompanies it doesn't match the design on the scabbard.

PRESTON (CONT'D)
I stuck close to this during the 100 Year War. Several times it saved me in battle. May it do the same for you. Oh, and don't forget what I taught you, or else I'm come and give you a swift kick, got it

Deagan nods and latches it onto his belt.

DEAGAN
Thank you sir.

PRESTON
Go to Port Jezavar. Ask around there and you'll probably find what you're looking for.

DEAGAN
If I can remember.. thanks again.

Deagan stands and walks over to the door. He bows to his friend and exits the building. He mounts his horse and rides to Jezavar. Meanwhile.

NATASHA
You see him yet? It's getting late.

MELANI
I don't.. I hope he's okay.

LEILA
I'm sure he's fine.

MELANI
Yeah..

Melani looks out into the dimly lit path leading out. She sighs as she closes the door. Sophia walks in.

SOPHIA
Is my brother home yet?

LEILA
He isn't. Let's just settle down. He should be home any minute.

NATASHA
Yeah, I mean, not even he would forget his birthday right?

Days have passed since Deagan left the Delgetty household. He was weary from his travels and he was weather worn. His stallion looked like it could give any second so he dismounted the beast and lead it to a stable. The Port of Jezavar was quite the busy street when he entered. He decided to start his search in “The Lion's Saloon” he entered and was met with the gaze of many sailors. Soon as they caught a glimpse of who stepped in they immediately went back to their drinks. Deagan approaches two shady looking people. As he does so a man in his mid-twenties accompanied by an older gentlemen catch a glimpse of Deagan.

INT. THE LION'S SALOON. DAY.

OLDER MAN
What is it sir?

YOUNG MAN
That kid there.

He points at Deagan.

YOUNG MAN (CONT'D)
You notice anything.. peculiar about him?

OLDER MAN
Can't say I have sir.

YOUNG MAN
Huh.. I swear I saw familiar looking red eyes...

Meanwhile.

DEAGAN
Can I speak with you two?

SHADY MAN 1
What do you want?

DEAGAN
I'm Deagan Avarti.. I'm searching.. for... a place that begins with an “H” I was wondering if I could perhaps find boarding upon your ship if you have one.

YOUNG MAN (V.O.)
Avarti.. no.. it can't be..

SHADY MAN 2
How much you willing to pay?

Deagan winces. He didn't have much gold to spare.

DEAGAN
Er.. I.. I can pay about 500 gold max.. I don't have that much on me...

The two shady men look at each other and laugh loudly disturbing the peace in the tavern.

SHADY MAN 1
Ha! You're kidding me! You expect us to take you anywhere for that measly amount?!

SHADY MAN 2
Now wait a sec Flur.. He is just a kid..

SHADY MAN 1
Yeah I guess..

DEAGAN (V.O.)
I'm not a kid...

SHADY MAN 1
Alright kid, we'll deal. I'm Captain Flur Dell. I know a few places that start with the letter "H." Just tell me what you are looking for exactly and we'll take you where you need to. Do we have a deal?

Deagan starts to reach his hand out to seal the deal, but the young man interrupts them.

YOUNG MAN
I'm sorry, but son, the only place these men will take you that starts with an "H" is Hell.

FLUR
Who do you think you are?

YOUNG MAN
I am Captain Harken Lafayette. Son, come with me, and I'll get you a good ship to travel on, not some garbage ship with three broken cannons and a woman with only two teeth.

DEAGAN
A woman with only two teeth?

HARKEN
Yeah, and not on the same side.

SHADY MAN 2
How dare you talk about my wife like that!

HARKEN
Why not? She's slept with every scoundrel on your boat.

SHADY MAN 2
I'll kill you!

SHADY MAN 2 takes the knife he was eating with and lunges at Harken. Harken sidesteps and breaks the mans arm, then grabs his collar, forcing him on his knees. Harken then grabs the fork from the table and shove it deep inside the man's throat. Harken kicks the man's body to the ground and looks around the tavern for anyone who might attack him. The young man's companion looks up from his letter at Harken and goes back to it.

HARKEN
That was in self-defense. Anyone else that thinks different is mistaken. Come with me son.

The two sit back at Harken's table as things start to proceed normally. Captain Dell leaves, scowling at Harken.

DEAGAN
So, who are you again?

Harken cast Deagan's question aside with his own.

HARKEN
You said your name was Avarti. It wouldn't happen to be a coincidence that you have a sister named Beatrix?

DEAGAN
Yeah.. How did you know?

HARKEN
Well, I suppose it's that time. She sent you packing and you have no idea what is ahead of yourself.

DEAGAN
Not exactly but -

HARKEN
Well, if you need a ship, you got it. My name is Harken DeVoy Lafayette.

DEAGAN
I know.. I caught it the first time.

Harken doesn't even sound like he's listening as he continues to talk.

HARKEN
My ship is proud to help the brother of a friend. Although I do need some compensation. Helps with resupplying the ship with firepower. If your sister sent you to me, it means you have trouble on your heels, and we'll need all the bang we can get.

DEAGAN
How much?

HARKEN
3000 gold.

A cough from the older companion. Harken looks at him.

HARKEN (CONT'D)
What?

The older gentlemen gives Harken a scolding look and shakes his head.

HARKEN (CONT'D)
Okay, 2000.

Another cough. Harken appears rather annoyed now.

HARKEN (CONT'D)
1500.

OLDER MAN
Harken...

HARKEN
700?

Harken's face turns to pain as he lets out a small cry of pain. The older man continues to read his letter.

HARKEN (CONT'D)
Ow! God alright! 200! Goddamn it's hard to run a business with you, Barret. I'm just trying to be a responsible businessman!

BARRET
By ripping off a distant friend?

Harken gives a sheepish smile as he tries to explain himself.

HARKEN
Oh well... you know... ah, screw it. The rides free.

DEAGAN
Then it's a deal. What's the name of your ship?

HARKEN
The Talona's Breast. Won her and the crew in a poker game. Best night of my life. The morning after was a sight to behold as well.

He has a dreamy looking face but is brought back to reality by Deagan's question.

DEAGAN
The Talona's....Breast?

HARKEN
Not the catchiest name, but we're damn proud of her. 40 cannons total. She's a captured Kelsiv cruiser from the end of the 100 Year War. Damn lucky pirates stole her right from Port Firepoint even before she was christened. Barret is currently helping our resupply and repair efforts. We leave tonight. Unfortunately, we wont be getting to your destination first. My crew and I have something planned, but we need to get there fast.

DEAGAN
Fine with me.

HARKEN
Then come with me and I'll introduce you to your new home on the seas!

Deagan gives a half-hearted smile as he's lead out of the tavern. He lags behind the two a little but still keeps up with them. The two stop causing Deagan to run into Harken. Harken looks at him and raises his brow.

HARKEN (CONT'D)
Watch it son or I take back my offer of the ride being free.

Deagan gives him a dull look as Harken smiles.

HARKEN (CONT'D)
I'm only kidding of course.

He spreads out his arms to a ship.

HARKEN (CONT'D)
This! This is the Talona's Breast! Mighty fine ship that's seen nearly every part of this world.

He smiles proudly and looks down at Deagan. His proud smile turns to a frown when he sees a frown on Deagan.

DEAGAN
..what?

HARKEN
You don't seem impressed.

DEAGAN
Was I supposed to be?

HARKEN
You're damn right you're supposed to be impressed.

Mr. Barret gives a small cough and gives him a stern look.

BARRET
Sir.. if we're gonna get to the site first then we best sail out now.

HARKEN
Yeah-Yeah I know. Get on board son, we have a few things we'll have to discuss.

DEAGAN
Fine.. where are we going?

Harken gives him a toothy smile.

HARKEN
That's a surprise my boy.

DEAGAN
Stop calling me son or boy.. I have a name dammit.

HARKEN
You expect me to start calling you by your first name after we've met only about an hour ago? What kind of a man do you take me for Reagan?

DEAGAN
It's Deagan...

HARKEN
I know, just pulling your leg, man. Enjoy the ride anyways. Sea sickness buckets are near the stern. And it helps to wash down the taste with whiskey. Just avoid the bottles with the slightly yellower tint...

DEAGAN (V.O.)
I think I made a mistake in joining this guy..

They board the ship.

Deagan leans up agains the port side of the ship and stares out to the open sea. He sighed.

DEAGAN (CONT'D) (V.O.)
What now Beatrix.. I think I found the person you wanted me to find.. but.. what now?

The ship casts off into the open blue. Harken and Barret go below deck and leave Deagan to his thoughts. A nice breeze blows through his hair and he squints as he watches the seagulls fly in the open sky.

DEAGAN (CONT'D) (V.O.)
Can't remember the last time I was on the big ocean blue.. feels good though.

He turns and slides down the rail into a sitting position. He pulls out the satchel that was given to him by Melani. A sad expression comes across his face.

DEAGAN
Mel...

HARKEN
Mel huh? Whose that?

Deagan looks up to see Harken leaning against the rail looking down at him. He didn't even hear him approach.

DEAGAN
When.. when did you get here?

HARKEN
Just now, saw you sitting here moping over a satchel.

DEAGAN
Yeah..

Harken gives him a smile.

HARKEN
Melani, eh?

DEAGAN
Yeah.. what of it.

HARKEN
It's nothing.. here I thought you were some lonely pup, but here you are with a girl on the side. How does Beatrix feel about this little someone?

Deagan returns to his sad expression.

DEAGAN
Well, Beatrix is...kinda...

Harken grins.

HARKEN
Ah, I see. You've been hiding her.

DEAGAN
Yeah...she kinda doesn't know.

HARKEN
Heh.. yeah, I know the feeling kid. Anyways, we'll be arriving at our destination some time later tonight. In the mean time come with me.

DEAGAN
Why?

HARKEN
Just shut up and follow me.

Deagan complies as he follows Harken below decks. He's lead into an extravagant dining hall where Mr. Barret is

Ramas told me this was up, so...
That was awesome! It was really interesting and enjoyable, though it was a bit long for the story's first part.
I like the choices of names, they're memorable and not just stock names off the rack. I also like the dialogue and attitudes- they're portrayed very well and some are quite funny.
I look forward to reading more. :3
