Ahhh..the world of surgery! I had a really great day today at my clinical! For those of you who don't know, I am going to school to become a Surgical Technologist (best described as the first assistant to the surgeon-so we have to know what they know). I am in my third year of college and my second quarter of the program (this is when I get all of my training). I participated in 5 surgeries today and three of them I was the first assistant. My first quarter started out slow and I felt inadequate, but after today, I feel that I will be really good at this! I'm considering becoming a surgeon after I get done with this!
Surgery is really overwhelming. I thought that I would have a lot of troubles, especially with anatomy. I am still having problems, but it is only my second quarter (I have four more to go before I graduate). I felt discouraged and even started to doubt my decision (not all of that is related to the studies-I had issues with some of the other students and the instructors) to become a Surgical Technologist. I am only doing this for my children after all. Since I had them so young, I had to buckle down and go to college and do something that would support them, not make me happy. Believe me when I say that the medical field was the last thing on my mind when I thought about college (that is, until I had my kids). After being in surgery and actually participating, I can't believe how much I like it! I really am getting the concepts and can work right beside the surgeon with little difficulty (of course, my instructor is there to ensure that I do not mess up).
I can't believe the day I had! I did really good and I don't care if that sounds conceited! xd
