Ever foreword through the Darkness...
She knew not how long it had been, only that it bad been quite long enough. Their world had been taken all-too easily, and this was all that remained. The two fought and fought, ran and ran, but it never seemed to get them anywhere. Was this still their world? No... it was a dark husk, soon to be fully consumed by the dark that bled into every crevasse the land had to offer. And there was nothing that either of them could do about it.
All she wanted to do was lay down and let the darkness overcome her, but then that would mean that he would be alone in this shadowed hell. She couldn’t leave him like that... and he wouldn’t leave her like that. They kept each other alive and semi-sane, pushing each other foreword when one of them felt as if they could not continue.
“I think I can walk on my own,” the girl stated, the dizziness passing with each step. The boy released her waist and took a hold of her hand. They continued.
The land was hard and flat, nearly undistinguishable from the sky. Their heavy footfalls echoed around them, mingling with the sound of their breath and the constant thump of their hearts. The lubb-dupp reminded them that they were still alive, and they took comfort in that.
They continued through the land for an unknown amount of time, and something appeared far off in the distance, breaking the constant blackness. Its golden light broke through the darkness like the first beautiful breath after nearly drowning.
“The Keyhole...” the girl breathed, hope sneaking back into her heart after so long. “We just-“
The shadows were around them again. They ran.
Run. Run. Don’t stop. Keep going. Don’t look back. Keep a’hold of your light. Run.
Their feet thumped against the dark rock beneath, their breath coming in ragged gasps. They ran, hand in hand, towards the glowing hope in the shape of a golden keyhole. One stumbled, the other helped them up. They came to a cliff – the hoard of shadowed creatures with terrifyingly soulless eyes no more than a yard behind them.
“I love you,” the man said.
“I love you too,” the woman replied, a smile despite the situation.
They jumped, hand in hand, arms outstretched towards their golden salvation.
The shadows had jumped after them, cart wheeling in the darkness above them, claws itching to dig themselves into the flesh their intended victims. One of the creatures just missed the girl, its claws sinking in the flesh of her shoulder. She screamed.
The man knew this was hopeless – they could not make it. But one could. He could save her, sacrificing himself. He twisted about in midair, throwing the girl towards the Keyhole. As he released her, two keys appeared in his hands, and he brandished them at the Shadows.
She whipped about to face the man, shrieking his name.
“I’ll find you!” he cried over his shoulder, as the girl hit the gold of the Keyhole. The shadows descended upon the man; a mass of claws and teeth. The two shared a final look.
He knew pain.
She knew nothing.
