[This is my monster post of doom. It just wouldn't stop growing, and now I have this monstrosity that I can'tpost anywhere!!!!]
She leaned back on her elbows and closed her eyes. Simply enjoying the feeling of peace and serenity. Feeling safe had always been rare for her. But now, at this very moment, she felt completely safe, and she slowly dozed away the twilight hours.
She didn’t wake again for a long time. The wind teased softly through her spiky, blue hair as she opened her eyes to soft moonlight. Blinking, she sat up hastily. “Oh no! It’s already night!” She gasped, glancing around her as she palmed her dagger in case of danger. All there was though, much to her chagrin, was a dimly lit clearing with a gentle stream bubbling at her innocently.
A groan forced its way up her throat as she put her head between her knees. “Great way to make a good first impression there, Enx! What would they possibly want with a squire like you? A late squire at that! And now I’m talking to myself! Great, just great!” She hissed fiercely as she rolled to her feet, running a hand along her sides as she stretched. Feeling all her weapons exactly where they should be helped calm her somewhat. “ Alright. Next, what should I do? It’s night, I have a good water source, so……find shelter!” She said as she strode alongside the stream. It seemed to follow a straight path further into the clearing, widening and speeding up with seemingly every step she took.
As she walked the sound of the once quiet stream had turned to the deafening roar of a river, though the stream itself had grown only five feet or so. Taking deep breaths, she tried to calm her mind. The sudden twists and turns of the river stream had lead her away from the almost safe embrace of the clearing, and instead, pulled her closer to the sheer stone of the mountain. She followed on, even though all her senses were taut as harp strings. Now she wished for those last bottles of Ether lost to the underground passage and it’s dangers.
Shivering in the cooler dark of the cliff side, she concentrated on the last few dregs of manna she had and whispered, “Fire!” Pure relief surged through her as a small were-light bobbed into existence. Her body relaxed minutely under the warming light, and she saw for the first time just how far she had come. Her blind stumbling had pushed her right up against the cliff face. Its sharp edges glittering with a deceptively soft glow.
Feeling rather lost and distracted by the volume of the roaring not- river, she put her hand against the rough stone wall. She was picking her way through the loose stones and slippery pebbles by the light of her fire when she felt the stone under her hand give way to a smooth, polished indentation in the wall.
“Since when do cliffs turn smooth?” She thought to herself as she ran her fingers carefully along the sleek surface. With the help of her were-light she saw that the indentation led further inwards. Sloping until it formed a huge tablet in the center. Apparently ancient, it seemed to glow with the same faint luminescence as the stream in the clearing had.
Imbedded all along its edges were strange ruins beyond even her knowledge. She puzzled over them for several minutes before moving towards the center of the tablet. “I’ll have to remember to thank Zorin for those reading lessons.” She thought as she gratefully realized she could make out what the central cluster of symbols said. “Lets see now,” she whispered to herself,” It says, ‘Welcome, warrior, to the valley of Taurus. That you have survived the journey thus far shows the Zodiacs’ blessing. If you are weary, be at peace, for the order’s base is not far. To reach it you must follow……..surrounded by forest…’ damn it!”
She hissed soft curses under her breath as her fingers ran over the roughness where words should be. “The last bit is missing. Looks like someone chiseled the rest away. Great, just my luck! Follow what? The stream? Or maybe the incessant roaring of the invisible river that doesn’t exist!” She gritted out between clenched teeth before letting out a scream of frustration. Roughly scuffing her fingers through her matted hair, she sank to the floor, her back pressed against the smooth indent. Sighing a long, drawn-out sigh she raggedly drew her jacket hood over her head and pressed further against the wall. “I might as well get some rest while I can. Maybe a refreshed sense of humor will help me find my way? The sunlight certainly will!” She chuckled humorlessly before dismissing her were-light and sinking into a restless slumber.
