System log: The Hat
I stood there in the middle of the square surrounded by happy people going about their daily business. I cringed slightly, to many people, not enough space. Shouldering my way through the crowd, I stopped abruptly when a street vendor grabbed onto my arm.
"I can tell you have a rough road ahead of you. Let me tell your fortune young lady, let's see what the spirits say for you!"
I stared at her, she was young, only twenty five or so, with curly brown hair cascading down her back in riglets and liquid brown eyes. She didn't look crazy, not in the least, of course when it came down to it, that didn't mean anything.
Still I let her pull me into the shade of her hastily set up stall. She grabbed my hand, and squinted at it. "your life line is very long, very long." She said nodding her head, "that is good for you." she moved my hand around and squinted some more. "you will have two children, both boys..."
"Bull." I said jerking my hand away, "I'm not having kids, or a guy, that's stupid."
The woman shrugged, her shoulders touching the bottom of her large hoop earings. "The future can change." From somewhere in her leather jacket she pulled out a pack of cards.
"Are you planning to play go fish?" I asked dryly.
"No." she said, "they are tarot cards, just believe alright?"
I snorted, "look lady, you're the one who dragged me in here."
She didn't reply but spread the cards out on the table. "pick one." She said gesturing to it.
I did as she asked, not sure why but i did anyways. I looked at the card and the picture on it. It meant nothing to me. The woman snatched it out of my hand and stared at it a long while. "Destiny," she remarked, "is complicated for you. There are so many different avenues to choose from, your world will be tangled and often difficult to live in. Take faith and..."
"look it lady, I don't need a gloom and doom proficy, I'll just leave now."
I said cutting her off.
She smiled, "of course, of course." she pulled a hat out from behind her seat. "take this, a promitional item." I looked at the hat, It was a golden rod yellow and vaguely conical.
"it doesn't have the mystic shoppe or something emblazioned on it some where does it?" I asked warily.
The woman laughed, "good heavens no! I am The Eccentric Miss Tik." she smiled, "I not only tell fortunes but I can fix clock work as well." she grinned, "but i'm sure one such as yourself has no interest in the mechanical."
Numbly I nodded, "damn straight" I muttered. Hastily I turned to leave.
"wait" she called, I turned back to the Eccentric Miss Tik. "take good care of that hat." she grinned, "trust me it's special."
I snorted, "If you say so." I left the shade, almost glad to be back in the sun and the crowd. I snorted again. "Damn occultist." And then carefully, I put the hat on my head....
