The Day Dreamer
The Day Dreamer sat on his fluffy white cloud, high in the air. The sun's yellow face shone down upon him and the west wind sent breezes to him to keep him cool. As he watched, a cloud to his left and above him began to change. It started out round and compact but as he watched it lengthened and curved. A head formed, each tooth clear and distinct. Six legs sprouted along it's length and color came to the white body of the dragon. Roaring with the pride and strength of its kind, the dragon raised hes green and red head to the sky. He seemed to struggle against some invisible force that kept him stationary. Hi struggles became more violent and he ripped himself free. It sped upward and flew in intricate curves, arches, and spirals in the blue sky. More dragons soon joined the other. Pink, red, orange, green, purple, blue, brown, blacks, yellow, and every color in between writhed in the air in a great squirming mass.
The west wind's breeze crossed over his body and the dragon's body faded into cloud matter and dispersed. The Day Dreamer frowned as tendrils of the former dragons curled away from him. He was laying on his back with hes hands behind his head, ankles crossed. He flipped himself over onto his stomach and wormed his way to peer over the edge of his cloud.
Underneath him, the land changed as though it was controlled by a child. At first the land was a subtle blue with threads of green swirling in it. Then it was red with small mountains. The land continually changed color and shape. At last it changed into a smooth land that was as reflective as a mirror. He saw himself, perched on his cloud, staring down at his reflection. He considered it a moment longer then decided.
He pushed up onto his knees then stood up as though he didn't fear falling. In truth he didn't. He bent his knees and leapt into the air. Instead of falling after a steep climb, he continued to rise. Up and up. Stars flickered to life in the sky and the moon rose into the sky while the sun faded. The Day Dreamer reached out and closed his right hand around one of the stars nearest to him. Light shone through his fingers and even though he felt no heat, he felt the light going through his hands. He began to fall back towards the mirror-like surface of the land below him. He turned his self over until he faced the land. The mirror loomed up ahead of him, still he sped on. When the ground was within ten feet of him, he put his arms out and sliced into the mirror as though it were water. He shot down deep. The cool pressed against his skin but it wasn't cold. The water around him was green but along the outskirts of his vision, dark blue surrounded him like a translucent curtain. He twisted in the water, pin wheeling his arms until he faced upwards. The water's surface was clear with small reflective shapes floating with the currents.
The Day Dreamer considered going back to the surface. Then he decided that he didn't need the air so he turned till he was vertical, facing down. He pushed his arms then swung them outward, propelling himself forward. Different fish swam near him. There were small, slender, dull colored fish that stayed near the edge of the green water. Bright, tropical fish were brave and came close to him, brushing his cheek and coasting along his back. Even an eel floated near him, making his skin tingle until it passed. He stroked his arms again and left the fish behind. He swam down and shortly after leaving the fish, he reached the bottom. As the sandy bottom grew closer, he swung his feet underneath him and planted them solidly in the soft, squishy mud. He lifter his right foot and stepped forward. His foot left the mud with a sucking that brought up eddies of sand that grew and lengthened. He was reminded of the clouds that had turned into dragons but instead they turned into long strings that seemed to lead somewhere. The Day Dreamer reached out and lightly laid his hands on the line of sand. The sand shimmered and then suddenly solidified into a sand colored bar that started off at a spot above his first footstep and led in a North-westerly path. He pondered the options then resolved that he didn't need to go anywhere else, why not follow the bar?
He kept his left hand on the bar and slid it over he cool metal surface that still seemed flecked with grains of sand and something else that was extremely lustrous. He admired the bar as he walked. Soon the mud and sand under the Day Dreamer's feet began to feel more solid. There were sharp lumps under his feet that was only a minimal discomfort. He wondered about his empty lungs; he didn't even seem to need air. It was an odd feeling having nothing in his lungs so he sucked in a breath. Cold water filled his mouth and throat. He felt dizzy and light headed but it didn't matter. He smiled and sucked in another gulp on the refreshing water. Then he remembered that he still had the star clenched tightly in his hand. He opened his hand and a blindingly white speck of light hovered over his open palm. It began to quiver in the silence of the water. Bemusedly he smiled at it and it floated up to eye level in front of his face.
It hummed faintly at him, the sound resonating in the water and making more sand ripples at his feet. Then without warning, it shot off in the direction the bar was leading him. It stopped twenty feet away and waited. The Day Dreamer pulled his feet out of the clinging mud then followed the star, squinting to see the small orb. As he moved forward the orb also moved, maintaining the twenty feet in between them. The water around him became iridescent, changing from color to color in the spectrum. Finally, the star stopped moving and the Day Dreamer caught up to it. It had stopped at the end of the sand pole. At the end of the pole was another piece of the odd material. It was square and stuck onto the end of the pole so as to form a sort of shelf. On this shelf sat a small emerald green cushion and upon that rested a key that looked as though the blacksmith had forged it out of solid pearl.
Thinking nothing of it, the Day Dreamer reached out the now empty hand and took the key off of the cushion. It was smooth with no ridges whatsoever. The surface was polished to perfection so that light gleamed off of every of the key. He turned it and watched as a light teal beside a band of pastel violet moved in a pattern away from the direct light of the star that was now right in front of his forehead, as though examining the key itself. The frequency of it's humming changed at the Day Dreamer looked up with a smile playing on his lips. Of course, there was a very tall, very elaborate door in front of him where there hadn't been one before. It was made of the same material as the key and gleamed in the same way as he moved closer with the star trailing behind. He pressed his palm against the door near the edge and wrapped his fingers around what appeared to be the edge of a thick slab of pearl. He moved closer and peered around the edge to behind the door. There was nothing there except for the same landscape that surrounded them. He pulled his head back around to the front of the door. The Day Dreamer stepped forward and gave an experimental twist on the knob of the door to discover that it was looked.
The smile broadened on his face as he slid the key into the very convenient keyhole and turned the key easily. He stood there for a moment with the key turned in the lock and his hand on the doorknob. Then he took a deep breath of the cool water, enjoying the sensation that it created. Slowly, he turned the knob and the door swung open without a sound. Without a backwards glance, the Day Dreamer stepped through the door and the star followed.
