Fate Dice
Fate Dice
Inspired by AEG’s Spycraft RPG

You may call upon your reserves of luck and skill in the form of fate dice. Sometimes, spending a fate die at the proper moment can make the difference between success and failure, or life and death.

Gaining Fate Dice
The Dungeon Master (DM) or Game Master (GM) awards one or more fate dice when they feel that a player has role-played their character exceptionally, exhibited leadership or problem solving ability, or otherwise entertained the group. Most importantly, a character receives fate dice any time they suffer because of their alignment (detailed below). A character with two of these extremes (such as a lawful good paladin) benefits from both taboos.

Lawful: Gain a fate dice every time you are impeded from achieving your goals (DM’s discretion) by the law or your own code of ethics.
Chaotic: Gain a fate dice every time you find yourself being persecuted by the local authorities or populace because of your actions.
Good: Gain a fate dice every time you let the villain life. This includes situations where you must let the villain escape to save the life of another,
Evil: Gain a fate dice every time you reveal your master plan to your enemies and they survive the encounter (DM’s discretion as to the definition of ‘master plan’) or you let them live.

These dice are added to your pool and may be spent immediately. Be sure to spend all of your fate dice, since they vanish at the end of the session. You receive three (3) fresh fate dice at the beginning of every session.

Fate Dice Types
The fate die type a character earns is determined by his character level. Fortune favors the bold…and it is those who are less experienced and capable who must be bold and take greater risks. As a character progresses in level, the die type for fate dice becomes smaller. Refer to Table 1: Fate Dice Types and Levels to determine your character’s fate dice type. Refer to your effective character level (ECL) (if you have one) when determining this.

Spending Fate Dice
You may spend your fate dice in the following ways:

Add to a Die Roll
You may add the total roll of a fate die to any die roll you make after you’ve created your character. Roll one of your fate die and add the result to your attack roll, damage roll, skill check, saving throw, etc. You may keep spending fate dice to increase a roll as long as you have fate dice left to spend. You may add any number of fate dice to a roll at any time before another action takes place - even after you’ve made your roll and seen the result. Fate dice used in this way can counteract the effects of rolling a natural 1 (though is still does not guarantee success).

This method may also be used to add to a dice roll of another character who has run out of fate dice, but only if the character shares an alignment aspect with you ( i.e. you both are good, or both are chaotic). A character may only benefit from the fate dice of one other person at a time.

Add To Your Armor Class (AC)
Once per round, you may spend a single fate die to increase your AC. This luck bonus stays in effect until the end of the battle.

Activate a DM/GM Fumble
You may spend a fate die to decrease the DM/GM’s roll by the total you roll. The DM/GM may counter by using one of their fate dice (see DM/GM Fate Dice below).

Heal Yourself
When not in combat (including taking a full round action doing nothing but healing) you may spend a fate dice to regain hit points. For each fate die you spend, you roll and regain that many hit points. You may also use your fate dice to heal another player, as long as neither player is in combat at the time.

DM/GM Fate Dice
The DM/GM receives fate dice as well - a number of dice equal to the number of the PCs in the party plus three. The die type is determined by the average character level of the party. They may spend these fate dice to increase the rolls of their NPC’s, add to the NPC’s AC, to activate a player fumble (this can be countered by the PC spending a fate die), or heal their NPCs. In all ways these uses of DM/GM fate dice work as described above.

The DM/GM has the option of giving important NPC’s their own fate dice, according to the rules governing PC fate dice. In this case the DM/GM fate dice cannot be used to aid that NPC. These characters can only gain gate dice for their alignment.

Finally, when a DM/GM awards a fate die to a character, the DM/GM receives a fate die as well, so they have to continue rewarding the players if they don’t want to run out of fate dice themselves.
