Notes From red_shadow1917.
Maybe it's me?
Whenever I start getting the parenting instinct hitting me too hard and I start having the wild notion that having a family wouldn't be so bad, nature has a way of putting a stop to it. I run into someone's kid (note the 'kid' can still be a legal adult and act like a four year old.) that strikes my perspective as so obnoxious that I first think I'm glad I don't have children. However, this gives way to the feeling that I don't possess as yet the maturity to handle being a parent. When I do encounter the parents of said kid they usually fall into two categories, totally inept for a variety of reasons or the parent who does the right thing and gets completely ignored until the brat gets their comeuppance and then the kid might remember that the parents warned them first and thus have no excuse for complaint. What I can say is that I like the later type of parent better, because they're self-honest about the situation in most cases and have a better sense of humour. The totally inept parent is usually trying to be the kid's friend instead of a parent or worse they believe some non-sense put in their brains (or lack thereof) by an authority figure with suitably ostentatious title. The inept parents have little to no sense of humour, they'd be great F.B.I. agents but don't have the intelligence for the job. When I encounter these type I just let things fall where they may as long as I'm not at risk of damage to my safety or that of anything I give a crap about. It's better not to get involved as with married couples fighting, you'll always come out looking like the arsehole no matter what position you take in the dispute. Now when I was a kid, don't get that cliche nonsense in your heads, there were still laws against stealing and disturbing the peace, vandalism ect. and these applied to everyone not just the adults. I'm not that bloody old either, but, I noticed that beginning in the late 1990's there was a public sentiment shift to punish the parents when kids broke the law. Even now it doesn't seem to make any sense. Punishing someone for the crimes of a family member is something you usually think of happening in backward places with oppressive ideologies, well, here's the rub: We do live in a backward society with an oppressive ideology but as long as we have the delusion of freedom and moral superiority then every thing is just hunky f*cking dory! Again, I think I need to grow up more before I have kids, I'm not against people doing it in the least but, I know my limits and right now in my life I know I'm not capable of being anything like a functional parent. neutral
