As urbanization ensued, China was plagued by several difficulties. Due to the overwhelming population, housing shortages and poor health conditions were commonplace. Pollution was widespread due to factories and cramped quarters, along with few women’s rights and acts of infanticide. Overpopulation in China has led to various dilemmas. Housing shortages and lack of jobs were frequent difficulties people experienced. Due to the cramped living style and the abundance of factories, pollution had become a serious problem in China-rivers and streams were contaminated with wastes, and the air was loaded with fumes and other byproducts of factories and such. As a solution to overpopulation, families were restricted to one child per family. However, due to desire to pass on the family name, boys were the preferred sex-numerous baby girls were left at orphanages or on the streets to die. In some cases, people used tactics such as breaking the baby’s spine, starvation and drowning. Women as a whole were viewed as inferior to men-jobs were given to men first, and men were paid higher wages then women. China’s overpopulation has led to multiple problems that the people are subjected to on a daily basis. Pollution and restricted living area are only two of the numerous trials the people are put through. Acts of infanticide and inequality for women also are common in China due to the population limitations.
