Final Moments: Tsume

Hige gave one last gurgling breath against my jaws, before his eyes became unfocused in death, finally laying to rest beside Blue. His blood tasted strong, salty in my mouth... and it was probably the first time in my entire life that I had ever despised the taste of blood. It broiled in my mouth, sickening yet comforting.

Familiar.

Gazing a final time at my two companions, laid together in death like they never could be in life, I rushed further up the mountain, allowing Hige’s blood to fuel what was to be my final act in this world, though I knew it not at that particular moment.

There they were… Darcia and Kiba – locked jaw-to-jaw in vicious combat, snarling and yelping and growling… I rushed into the fray, heedless of my own safety as always, and threw myself at Darcia. We danced, like two leaves upon the wind, the final dance of death. I darted back and forth, teeth meeting flesh at every other turn. Blood sprayed. Darcia ran.

Did I win?

I slumped to the ground, only for a moments rest before continuing on, I assured myself. There was something wet on my side… Looking down, I stared. That wasn’t right… I had won, right? Then… why…

My side was bleeding; gushing like it had never done before – the ripped wound should have hurt, but… I leaned myself up against a piece of ice that jutted from the ground, knowing that this was probably the end. If I couldn’t feel the pain from the wound, then it must be even worse then it looked.

I couldn’t feel much…

Kiba was there… I said something to him, I’m sure of that, yet my words allude me – slipping away as my blood sliped through my fingers… my fur? Man... wolf... whatever I was, I slid down the ice, hit the ground with a soft thud. It’s cold… so cold… so… white.

Beautiful.

White is everywhere, settling over me like a comforting blanket. The colours are still there, up there in the wide open sky… they are bright… very bright… I close my eyes against the glare. It’s… too much for me…

Too beautiful…

Toboe? Are you listening? I’ll see you in Paradise, Kid… Wait for me…
