If there was one noise Teragen loathed and feared the most, it was the sound of a child's cry. There was something about the feeling it had. So innocent, and full of fear. Oh yes, that noise could cause him far more pain then any flesh wound.
The helicopter pilot visibly flinched as another ear-shattering scream pierced through his walls. Why did it hurt so badly? He wanted so badly to run into the room and stop the pain.. but he was a big boy now. To be brought out of the trance like that would only cause embarrassment. Teragen ran his fingers through his dark hair.
It had been... three years since the last time he had heard those sob, and seven since he had even met the boy who caused him such joy, and at times like these, agony.

It had been another hell day at work. He had to fly from Johto to Kanto again, then fly his boss off to the Sevii Islands, because apparently, some twerp had burst in through and knocked out all the grunts, and then had the balls to take on the boss, and actually win. Yeah, overall, not the best of days. So here he was, wandering down one of the darker allys in Saffron, with a cigarette in between his lips. He inhaled, sucking in the toxic smoke. With his eyes closed Teragen paused and took another breath. For the longest time he had been on the go. Had he ever taken the time to just breath? Apparently not. His serene moment, how ever, was crudely taken away, as a sudden force ran into his legs.
"Oi! What the ********, kid?!" Teragen snarled out, his eyes wide as he searched around him, looking for the cause. There was a sniffle, and the pilot's eyes locked onto the most pathetic thing he had ever seen.
It was a boy, he was sure of that, no older then nine. His red hair was matted and soaked in mud and other vile things. Teragen made eye contact, and decided then and there that his heart had shattered. His eyes were a brilliant aquamarine, and he was sure that tears made them shine the way they did. Amd his face.. what had happened? Two near symmetrical cuts dug in on his cheekbones, a trickle of blood learking out of one. His lip was split, and a welt had formed on his cheek. Who the ******** would do this to a kid?
"Look, kid, sorry for spazzing like that.." Teragen trailed of, his sharp voice softening a little. He knealed down to see the boy better. He was stick thin.
The boy turned jumpy the moment Teragen moved, and attempted to run. But Teragen was a bit smarter then the kid, and instead of just allowing him to bolt, his firm hand clasped over the frail wrist.
Immediately he knew that he shouldn't of done that.
The boy let out a strangled yelp, and Teragen dropped his hand. The boys wrist had been hurt as well, it seemed.
"Kid, whats wrong?"
A silent pause as Teragen watched the boy as he cradled wrist.
"C'mon, Kid, talk. I won't hurt you."
The boy stared hard at him, sucking on his split lip.
"Listen, ki--"
"I got a name."
Teragen blinked, his mouth slacked. Well that was definitely not the response he had been expecting. "What is it?"
"Dexter."
"...Well, Dexter. I'm Teragen."
"What'chu doin' here?"
Teragen shrugged. He didn't know, honestly. This wasn't his usual route hime. "Walking." He finally said, pulling the smoke from his mouth and dropping it. "A better question though, is why are you here? Go home to you're Mummy, Dex."
"...Mums dead."
Teragen blinked in surprise. The kid said it so easily, with barely any emotion showing. How could he be so calm over the fact his mother was gone? "Your dad then? He's probably worried about you."
Yeah, Teragen, time to shut up. The look in Dexter's face was spite and hatred.
"My pop's in jail."
That would explain why the kid was on the streets.
"Aw, Ki-- Dex. Why don't we go to the hospital, they'll get you patched up, yeah?" Teragen asked, standing up quickly and holding out his hands. Dexter shrinked away, staring at Teragen.
"No. I don't want to. T-They'll make me stay with h-him again." The kid stuttered, the aquamarine orbs dilating even more. Had something bad happened? He had originally thought that the boy had been in a fight with over slum kids, but now... he wasn't so sure.
"Dexter, they won't. I'll make sure of that."
Dexters arms crossed infront of himself, he was shaking horribly. "You're lying. Everyone says that. I ain't stupid. I ain't." As fast as his dirty sneakers would allow, Dexter started to walk backwards, leaving.
Part of Teragen seemed relieved to know the boy didn't want help. He would be handful, and he couldn't take care of a kid... but at the same time, Teragen felt such pain to see him go. Yeah... Dexter had caught his heart. "I know you aren't." He found himself saying, moving his long legs quickly, sprinting to grab the boy. His arm clasped over the bony shoulder. "I promise you. You won't have to go anywhere you don't want to."
"...You promise?"
"Promise."
"Well, I don't wanna go to the hospital, so there."
Teragen actually laughed as the boy stuck out his tongue. Dexter blinked in surprise, normally sass like that would've recieved a slap across the face, but the older man just slid his hands from his shoulders to under his armpits, delicately lifting the boy off the ground. Teragen tried to be gentle, but even the softest touch received a gasp of pain. Yeah, this was definitely something worse then a brawl with the slum kids. After a moment of delicate positioning Dexter was found resting gently against Teragen's chest, the man's arms wrapped around him. "Sorry bud, but I'm taking you there either way."
And that was when little Dexxy started to fight. He wriggled and pushed against Teragen, but to be frank, he was freaking exhausted. And cold. And in pain. "Lemme go, yo!" He squeaked, beating his scraped fists against Teragen's suit. But instead of dropping the boy and letting him run free, Dexter found the man's arms tighten around him even more. For a moment, he though he heard Teragen apologizing, but he couldn't be sure, because a moment later, he was drifting off into sleep, something he hadn't done properly for two weeks.
