“…and now I would like to introduce a new student. You may come in.”
Forty brown eyes switched to the front door, and waited for a set of uniform shoes to step in. Instead, a pair of colorful high tops, and black skinny jeans appeared. And as the second pair of colorful shoes appeared, a white hoodie with the hood up, and very long black hair trailing out showed up, causing several students to stare. Her hair was almost to the ground; though it was pretty, the strands were about three feet off from the limit!
When she turned to face the rest of the class - in a slouched, unprofessional way - a pair of brown, almost black, eyes stared back at her new class mates. If one could hear the heart beats, several were accelerating.
“Class,” the teacher said in pure Japanese, “this is Matsumoto Kurii. She just moved from America, and her Japanese isn’t very good, but do take care of her. [e] Matsumoto-san? Do you have any words fo your new class mates? Likes, dislikes…?[/e]”
The students waited for an English response, but instead, fluent Japanese flew from her mouth, “Yo. I‘m Cree, or Kurii to you guys. Don’t bother with the formal stuff. Everytime someone calls me Matsumoto, reminds me of my old man. I like food and music. I don’t like a lot of stuff. Keep that in mind, we’ll definitely get along. Please take care of me, you hear?” She saluted a thin arm, and gave an wink and an open-mouthed smirk to her stunned classmates.
The teacher, surpirsed at her greeting, simply said, “[e]Well, Kurii, I can see you haven’t gotten your uniform yet.[/e]”
“Nope. We have to have it shipped from America, since my mom didn’t plan on leaving until today.”
“…why don’t you have a seat in the back? Behind Wada-san? Wada-san, please raise your hand.”
There were several groans - “Man, why does he always get the good ones?” - as the boy labeled as Wada-san raised his hand.
As Kurii made her way to the back, she began to sing to herself in English:
"I'll come back When you call me No need to say goodbye
Just because everything's changing Doesn't mean it's never Been this way before
All you can do is try to know Who your friends are As you head off to the war
Pick a star on the dark horizon And follow the light..."
Stares follwed the girl. When the girl sat down, Wada-san immediately turned and said, "So hey. I'm Keichii. Can you understand me?"
Kurii simply looked at him, and ignored him. Keichii made a face, and turned back around. With a sudden flick, a note landed on her desk. Kurii looked around slightly without moving her head, and messily opened the neatly folded note. She scanned the content, then wrote back in perfect Japanese. The first set of characters said, "You might want to be careful, Kurii. Keichii's an idiot, and doesn't understand English."
And in her writing, Kurii wrote: "I know. There's someone just like him back in the states. Thanks though. - KUrii"
A Japanese American girl - Kurii (Cree) - is transferred to Japan although she only knows how to write in Japanese, and speaks only when she has to. She is a professional baton twirler (a reason why she transferred) and she dances only to English songs, in which many people have a hard time comprehending if they don’t do well in English in Japan. She has a habit of singing songs that reveal what she’s feeling or thinking to herself.
A Japan-native Japanese - Keichii - boy is a player, and his goal is to date every type of girl imaginable and then once he understands her completely, dumps her. The only one left on his list is a foreigner. So when Kurii transfer in, he immediately goes for her. Turns out he sucks at speaking and writing English!
Kurii ignores him most of the time since she’s in love with another back in the states, and she’s constantly singing about him. Most of the kids in class know, except Keichii, who doesn’t know what the hell she’s saying.
One day, she gets a call from her love, and he’s pretty much telling her you’re only a friend. Suddenly, when Keichii comes to bug her, she starts singing in Japanese, and he finally realizes she’s never been interested, but he also doesn’t know that she’s finally starting to get interested in him! So when he does find out she was in love with another this entire time, he tries to avoid her. But now, she's the one chasing him.
I picture the twosome's end when Kurii has a competition, and she's one of the two finalists. She dances to the song, Candles, by Hey Monday (her mother wasn't happy when Kurii chose the song, but Kurii loves to twirl to music she can relate to since she was just dumped) Keichii finally understands after hours of being tutored by Kurii herself, who is both fluent in both English and Japanese.
