“Hill.”
“Bell.”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to your recital. Practice ran late because of the show in two weeks, and they wouldn’t let me leave-”
“I know. It‘s fine.”
“…I didn’t forget, if that’s what you’re thinking. I swear I didn’t forget.”
“…”
“Hill, I know how much that recital meant to you. And I know you were mad at me this morning, and I’m sorry about that too.”
“… Blyk made it. Even Raye made it, and you know how busy she is with her job and all.”
“I know, and I’m sorry.”
“You promised me.”
“I know, I know, and I hate myself for not ditching practice. Please forgive me, I’m really sorry, Hill.”
“…”
“Hill…”
“…Blyk said you called him.”
“Well… yeah. I knew you would want someone there… I know Blyk wasn’t the best choice, but Raye didn’t pick up her phone at first, and I was desperate-”
“Raye got your message.”
“Yeah, she called me once practice was over-”
“Thank you.”
“…! I really am sorry. I really wanted to be there for you.”
“I know. And I forgive you. You should know by now I would never stay mad at you for long. We‘re sisters, and I‘ll always forgive you.”
“Hill…”
“Hug?”
“Hug.”
“I’m a performer now! Blyk said himself he doesn’t need me!”
“Raye, you know how pig-headed Blyk can be! You’re his partner, you know better than anyone that he needs you!”
“…well, yeah. But that idiot needs to learn that he isn’t the only one suffering amogst us. Black may mean empitness, but I’m just as empty without him!”
“Then why don’t you go back? Hill and I really miss you at the compound…”
“Because he needs to learn to apologize for his actions! He has never ONCE said sorry to you, to Hill… to me. He has no idea how much he hurts me when he says I‘m not needed.”
“Raye…”
“Look, Bell, I’m sorry. I miss you guys too, but I just couldn’t stand to be used by him anymore.”
“I see… but Raye, you have to come back. You can keep your job, and your apartment, but Blyk is starting to starve to death. He hasn’t eaten anything since last week.”
“Ugh, that idiot. Has he finished off the bottles I left?”
“Yeah, but he said he hated it.”
“What?! That arrogant little-”
“No, no! He meant like he doesn’t like it cold. You know, he likes it… fresh.”
“Ungrateful little b*****d. Ahh. Fine, I’ll help. But I’m not joining again, I just don’t want his death on my conscious.”
“Yay! OMG, I can’t wait to tell Hill you agreed! I knew I could do it!”
“Blyk.”
“…Raye.”
“What the f*ck happened to you? Didn’t I say to call me once you finished off the supply I left?”
“…it tasted horrible.”
“Blyk. The only difference between those bottles, and my glands are the temperature. I tasted it myself, and there is no difference in taste-”
“That’s what you say, but I know what it’s like fre - Argh!”
“Careful! Holy sh!t, Blyk! I can feel your ribs! How long have you been like this?!”
“…none of your business.”
“You ninny, it IS my business. I’m your partner; I was made for you. Now tell me how long!”
“…a month.”
“EH! Blyk, you idiot! Bell told me it was only a week! How did you-”
“…”
“…oh God. You stalked my apartment?!”
“I was hungry!”
“Blyk, all you had to do to get a full, fresh meal from me was ask! You know that just being around me doesn’t fill you completely! Oh God, Blyk, you’re so thin-”
“Shut up, Raye. F*ck, I feel old.”
“Old? You and I are barely five years old, and you’re saying you feel old? That’s what a human in their fifties would say, and we’re ten times younger.”
“Well, they’re human. They don’t know when they’re going to die, but we do.”
“… at least we can ignore the candles.”
“Heh. I wish. You and the twins can, but I can’t. I’m Black, remember? I’m darkness, and you can’t ignore a fliskering candle in the dark.”
“You’re not the only one, Blyk.”
“…?”
“Blyk, you and I both know I’m Dark Gray. And yes, I can ingore the candle, but I’m almost as dark as you. I have a hard time ignoring that d@mn candle as much as you do.”
“…”
“And Bell and Hill have the same problem. Though she’s Light Gray, and she can ignore it more than I can, Bell is dying both because of that stupid thing and because Hill is dying faster than all of us. Hill is White, and though she can barely see her candle, she knows her time is running out, and yet she still smiles for Bell and me.
“And for you, the ungrateful b*****d. Don‘t you see that?”
“Of course I do.”
“Than why do you keep complaining like a child? You’re a man, bulk up-”
“That’s the point, Raye. We’re not human!”
“So? We look and act like them-”
“I’m probably the most human out of all of us.”
“What? No you’re not!”
“Yes I am. Raye, out of all of us, I’m the one who’s afraid to die. Like a human, I’m scared, Raye. And like a human, I’m not afraid to show I’m scared, yet I’m proud enough to only complain and not bawl about it. I’m human enough to hide the fact I’m scared from the ones who don’t care about me.
“Problem is that the people who care are also the farthest thing from human.”
-
”These candles represent your life-spans-”
White, light gray, dark gray, black.
From light to darkness.
White is filled. She is happy. She is complete. And that is why she is dying first.
Light gray is slightly emptied. Because of this, she must die with the color closest.
Dark gray is emptied even more. Because of this, she must die with the colorless.
Black is empty. He is cold, and never satisfied. And he will die last, alone.
They were created for one another.
“We can easily let you melt away-”
And two of them could only live when the other is present.
Two of them were sisters. The other two were lovers.
“-or we can just blow out the flame.”
They were the shades from darkness to light and back. And as one dies, the others begin to fade.
