Chapter 1. Pleasantville
1. Pleasantville

It's the 7th of September, the end of Summer, finally. I've long awaited the end of Summer, it's the worst season, it's hot and sticky and relentless. There's no reprieve from all the people either, people that do nothing but basque in themselves. I'm ashamed to call myself a human being, I've never been treated like one, nor have I ever acted as one. You're probably asking who I am? Well, I'll tell you who I am, I'm no one. But for the sake of consistency, you may call me Rose. Rose Anderson, I'm sixteen years old, and I'm moving to a little town called Pleasantville in Pennsylvania.
"Great." I thought to myself, "Pleasantville...I already want to kill myself."
I put my head in my hand, leaning my elbow onto the window frame of the car, watching the trees go by. I stared at my mother, you can call her Mia, babbling on about how much she loves this place, and how many new friends I can make. I heard her rambles, pretending to pay attention, to make her feel better. I hear her, but I don't listen, tired of hearing how I should try to like this new place. How I'm away from all the memories, how I can start over, just with her. It is just her and I, with my dog, Toetoe. Just us with our broken little family. I heard her sigh, she must have realized I'd stopped listening a while ago. I felt bad when I did this to her, after all, we both were alone here, I'm all she has right now.
It was about 5 o'clock P.M, the sun turning the clouds and sky a slight pinkish color. The car slowed and I looked around out the window as we pulled onto a small street in a development with big houses; they must cost a fortune to buy. We eventually pulled into the driveway of a big house, like ones we'd past before. It was a white house, with a large wrap-around porch, lots of windows, and a big beautiful front door.
"We're here." My mother said.
I looked at her and smiled a little. She smiled back as she brushed my hair from my face.
"I promise things will be better here." She said, with a heavy heart. "You'll meet people you can get along with, just please try, baby." She said. Her eyes teared up a little. She cried so easily, and over everything.
"I promise I'll try, mom." I tried to say it convincingly.
I got out of the car, shutting the door. I opened the back, letting Toetoe out.
"Come on, Toe, lets check out our room." I looked at him and he wagged his tail.
My mother got out and she walked in front of me to unlock the big front door. We walked into a hall that lead to the stairs, living room, kitchen and a few other rooms. I had no real interest in exploring the house, just my room. I looked at my mother.
"I'm off to bed." I said, quite blankly.
"No dinner?" My mother asked.
"No, I'm tired. I also need sleep for tomorrow, first day in school." I smiled a little, to try to make her feel better, and it did.
"Alright, baby. Sleep sweetly." She winked and headed to the kitchen.
I then went up the stairs, and Toetoe followed me. I looked around, until I saw my familiar bed through the far East door. I went straight into my new room, looking around, making sure the movers didn't break anything. After inspecting all of my unbroken pieces of furniture, I went to my bed. My mirror-backed, cabinet sided bed that stood against the North wall. There were two windows on the East wall and the closet was on the South wall. The room was all white, just like my last room. I sighed, and fell down onto the bed, and Toetoe jumped up next to me. I patted him on the head.
"Toetoe, I hate it here already.." She sighed.
I looked around the moonlit room, watching the shadows from the trees outside, almost dance around the room. I sat up quickly, as I could swear one that looked like a hand, pointed at me. I shook my head, it wasn't unusual for me to see things like that. I lay back on the bed, the thought of the shadows already gone, and I fell asleep, wanting to forget the place I was in, and will be in for years to come.

I slept badly that night, waking up ever hour, on the hour. I had given up when it became a dusky twilight color outside. I decided to spend some time getting read for my first day at school, I wanted to make an, interesting, first impression. I unpacked my box full of new clothes that my mother bought me the day before last. I smirked at all of the gothic-emo pants, skirts, dresses and make-up. My mother bought me whatever she thought would make me happy, and for that I smiled and thanked her aloud, thought she wasn't there. I was always grateful for her trying to make things better. So, I pulled out an outfit that I liked that was a black skirt with purple accents and lace trimming with a lace-up corset that matched it. I removed my clothes from yesterday and replaced them with the new ones for today. It took a few minutes to lace up the corset, but I got it after a few ties. I grabbed some make-up and went into the upstairs bathroom, and I closed the door quietly. I looked in the mirror after putting my new supply of make up on the sink counter
