Stories that are Just So
Part 2

It was just another day.

The USS Enterprise was docked at Starbase 1; the only ship docked there. Due to the fiasco a few months back, all starships save the Enterprise were blown to bits by the Romulin, Nero. Years of plans and construction to waist. At least now Starfleet was working on re-constructing them. At least.

The whole aftermath of Nero’s attack was greatly grim. The loss of the other ships, the loss of the original planet Vulcan, the loss of billions and billions of lives. And for what? Reckless revenge.

The Enterprise was almost done with it’s much needed repairs.

The Science Officer walked into the deserted bridge. Because the ship was still under repairs, it could not go on any missions. So, most everyone was off doing something else, if not helping out.

The Science Officer’s hands were neatly folded behind his back as he looked around the room. He knew the Chief Communications Officer was taking a break, and visiting her parents down on Earth. The Helmsman and the Navigator were most likely out somewhere, doing something; the Science Officer didn’t really care. As for the Captain, well, he was most likely off with some Orion again.

The Science Officer closed his eyes momentarily, as if to scold the actions of his Captain; he still resented him and his actions slightly. He passed the Captain’s chair without a second look, and went to stand by the front viewing screen. Currently the Enterprise had a good view of Europe.

The view was peaceful, but the Science Officer gave no hint on what he was thinking of the scenery.

The Science Officer blinked, and then creased his brow, trying to take in what he was seeing. But no, he saw- what? Dead ahead was what seemed to be the formation of a hole in space…

The Science Officer knew at once what it was. But, how could it be? As the seconds passed, the whole got larger, and what seemed like lightning seemed to issue from it. A lightning storm in space.

Alarms when off. Glad to know he was not the only one seeing this, the Science Officer went to his station, awaiting orders. While he waited, he glanced over at the viewing screen. He was puzzled; how could a Black Hole suddenly develop just outside the orbit of Earth? Of all people- or species- he should be the one to know.

Just then the bridge was flooded as everyone came to their stations. The Helmsman and Navigator dashed in, and took their seats in front of the Captain’s chair. Even the Chief Communicator came in; the Science Officer followed her with his gaze, but didn’t ask how and why she was here; now was not the time. Last came in the Captain, his uniform notably ruffled.

The Captain began to speak as he took his seat. “Goddamn it, why the hell is a Black Hole opening up here and now?! Starbase 1 is now about to move position, out of that damn thing’s way. We need to dethatch. Sulu!”

“Aye!” yelled the Helmsman.

“Chekov, maneuver us so we can get a good shot at that thing, but far enough it doesn’t suck us in!”

“Aye!” yelled the young Navigator.

“Uhura, send down evacuation warnings to Earth, we’ll be in trouble if it get’s sucked in.”

As the Chief Communicator answered, the Science Officer had to agree. What would possibly happen if Earth was sucked into a Black Hole? Logically, they’d be f**ked. He didn’t think along those exact simple terms, but the overall meaning was the same.

However, just before the USS Enterprise could pull away from its dock, before Starbase 1 could maneuver out of the way, before the Chief Communicator could issue evacuation orders, something small darted out of the Black Hole; it looked to be a small vessel. It sped out, not pulled back by the gravity of the Black Hole. It then seemed to pause; it floated aimlessly in the vacuum of space before warping out of sight.

Everyone on the Enterprise was puzzled, even the Science Officer. But what happened next was even more bewildering. The Black Hole seemed to cave in upon itself, and in no time at all had disappeared completely.

Silence.

“Captain,” came Uhura’s voice. “We’re being told to go after that- er, vessel that just came out of the Black Hole. Starfleet will handle what just happened here, but we have to go after it.”

The Captain pushed a button on his chair, and an overhead communication line to the engine room opened.

“Yes Cap’in?” came the voice of the Chief Engineer.

“Scotty, can we warp at this point?” Asked the Captain.

“You’d be pushing it, but I think we can manage!”

“Ok, Sulu you heard him!” said the Captain.

As Sulu and Chekov worked together to follow that trail of the small ship, the Captain then turned to the Science Officer. “Any idea what that was all about, Spock?”

The Science Officer paused, as if to collect his thoughts. He could tell that everyone in the room was listening in as they worked. “It would seem as if this Black Hole was opened due to some anomaly in another reality, as we have experienced before.” Everyone, though busy with their assignments, could easily agree. “It would explain why it just appeared with no warning. But as to why it opened, I do not know. Perhaps that small ship can explain.”

The ship left the dock, and moved out of the Starbases’ way, and clear away from where the Black Hole had suddenly appeared.

“Ready when you are, Captain Kirk,” said Sulu.

“Punch it,” said the Captain.
