bursting out of the elevator. “Did you see Emerald?” he asked panting. He leaned on the counter again.
There was a sparkle in her eye as she replied, “I know exactly where they went!” I’ll take you there.” She smiled broadly and hopped over the counter. “Come on,” she beckoned.
“Won’t you get in trouble?”
“So, nothing this interesting ever happens here!” She grabbed his hand, and the two rushed out the door.
The night was beautiful. It was a full moon and the sky was filled with stars. Emerald sighed. “Is something wrong?” Griffon questioned. “You’ve been sulking since we left.”
Emerald faked a smile and shook her head. “Oh no. I’m fine. It’s just,“ she scrambled for words, “so beautiful.” He smiled, then came to a stop. “Let’s set up here.” he decided. Unlinking arms, he started to empty the contents of his bag. He laid a blanket on the ground, then turned to her. “Are you hungry? I brought some sandwiches.” She shook her head no. “Okay. Here.” He sat down on the blanket, pulling her by the hand closer to him. He laid back on the blanket, and she followed.
She could see all the stars in the sky. For a moment she smiled. “They’re breathtaking.”
“Not as breathtaking as you.” He grinned looking over at her. She blushed. He lightly gripped her hand. Turning on his side, he pulled her closer to him, till their noses were touching. Her face turned red. She was nervous. Then he kissed her gently and pulled back a bit to see her reaction. She didn’t know how to react. Then he kissed her again. It was so nice for a moment. The two of them under the stars, but then he slowly switched position, and moved on top of her. She pushed him away, but he stayed over her. “Come on. Just calm down.”
“Get off of me!”
Raiden and Terra rushed up to the scene. They saw Griffon on top of her. She didn’t look happy.
“Hey!” Raiden yelled.
Griffon and Emerald turned their attention to the new arrivals. Griffon snarled. “Fine then. We’ll do this the messy way.” He raise his arm high, ready to attack her.
Emerald shrieked. She felt helpless, like nothing could be done.
Raiden readied himself to fight, but, suddenly, Terra shouted out, “Wrap!” Vines grabbled Griffon and constricted him tightly. He struggled to free his arms. Terra winked at Raiden.
Raiden nodded and added, “Confusion!”
Griffon closed his eyes tightly and moaned. He couldn’t see straight, but he continued to struggle. He pulled a knife out of his back pocket and manged to cut the vines that constricted him.
Terra used razor leaf, but Griffon jumped out of the way. Then he slashed at Raiden but missed completely. He growled angrily. Then, unexpectedly, he straightened up and grinned.
“Confusion’s worn off,” Raiden confirmed.
Emerald stood up. She was in shock. She observed Griffon carefully for a moment, taking him in. Griffon’s gaze caught hers, and he moved toward her.
“No!!!” Raiden exclaimed, using psychic.
Griffon glared back at him. “Stupid wynaut! Mind your own business!” Using bite, he leapt back at him. Raiden let out a cry and fell to his knees. Griffon was stronger than he had expected.
“Growth seed!” Reina countered. Little seeds clung to Griffon and slowed him down. He eyed her but went for Emerald instead. He charged at her with full force. ”Faint attack!”
Before she knew it, Emerald was countering. “Swift,” she spoke, quickly moving out of the way. Then she finished with a take down. Griffon collapsed.
Terra used wrap once again. Vines bound Griffon tightly. He struggled, but to no avail. He was too weak. Emerald walked slowly over to him. “Are you working for him”
He laughed. “I know all about you. You don’t even know who ‘he’ is? How can you ask questions about things that you don’t even know anything about?” He smiled but it wasn’t his normal, beautiful smile; or was it? It had a hint of malice. There was a certain cruelty to it. It sickened her.
Then she just started talking, but she had no control over what she was saying. It just flowed out of her mouth. Her real self was talking. “Shut up! I’m not as stupid as you think I am! You tell him that if he wants me, then he’ll just have to come and get me himself, because apparently his little henchmen are just too weak.” This threw Griffon into a fit, and he struggled violently for a moment. He snarled at her. “We’re two and O,” she finished, leaning in close to his face and putting on a smirk of her own.
“Will it hold?” she asked, turning to Terra.
Raiden and Terra were awestruck Her demeanor had completely changed, and now she sounded just like Griffon. “Uh yeah,” Terra muttered. “It should.”
“Good,” Emerald replied. Then she turned back to Griffon. She eyed the vines carefully, then grabbed the knife he was clutching. “I’ll hold onto this.”
Griffon smiled again, “Don’t worry. You can be sure that I’ll be back for it.” She dropped the smirk and glared for a moment, then turned around and began to leave, twirling the knife in her hand. She called to Raiden and Terra, “Come on.”
Raiden and Terra looked at each other then back at Emerald. Raiden moved first, then Terra followed. Emerald walked a few more yards then stopped abruptly. A single tear flowed down her cheek. Raiden ran up to her, and Terra followed. Emerald tried to stop the tears, but they fell slowly, one by one to the ground.
Raiden wiped a tear off her cheek. “Hey, it’s okay. It’s over now. You’re all right,” he comforted.
“What’s wrong? Griffon’s gone now,” Terra ventured.
“Emerald sobbed. “You don’t understand. You-you should go. I’ll just get you into trouble. I’m-I-I’m not who you think I am…”
Of course you are. You’re Emmi silly,” Terra replied.
“That person back there, that was me,” she looked away
Raiden burst in, “Emerald, it doesn’t matter who you were! Stop worrying bout who you are. What you’ve done. It doesn’t matter. That’s the past. You’re not that person anymore. All that matters is who you are now. Emerald, you are the nicest person I’ve ever met. I don’t know what you did, but you don’t deserve this.”
A smile crept across her face, and she hugged him tightly. “Thank you,” she whispered into his ear. She turned back to Terra with her usual happy demeanor. She let out a laugh as she wiped tears from her eyes. “Sorry about that. We should be going now. It was very nice to meet you.”
“I want to go with you,” Terra replied.
“What?” Emerald gasped.
“Emerald, there’s something different about you, and I don’t just mean what happened. You as a person. I don’t know where you’re going or why, but I want to help you.”
“But you can’t-”
Terra laughed. “I can, and I am. So just get it in your head.” She smiled.
Emerald smiled. She was helpless. The three walked back to the hotel together. They split up to get their things then met back in the lobby.
“Are you sure about this?” Emerald asked Terra one last time.
“Positive!” she replied.
They left the town and started walking. They were all tired, but they had no choice.
