Training Basics!

It's basic knowledge that as a Pokemon battles, they gain experience, level up, (Most) evolve and learn new moves.
But they're are many factors that play into how a Pokemon grows.
I will explain these in short detail.

Base Stats-
Every Pokemon has a base level for their six stats (HP, ATK, DEF, SP. ATK, SP. DEF and SPD.)

These determine the minimum of Pokemon Stats when applied to a Neutral Nature (More about Natures later).

For example, Venusaur has a Base SP. ATK of 100, which means the SP. ATK will range for 205 - 299 via Neutral Nature, 184 - 269 with a Hindering Nature and 225 - 328 with a Beneficial Nature.

Some Pokemon have higher Base Stats than others.
IE - Legendary Pokemon have the highest Bases which allow their Stats to break 400, 500 and even 600 in total.

Also, an Evolved Pokemon will always have higher Stats than a non-evolved Pokemon.

Natures-
Every Pokemon you come across has a Nature.
There are 25 different Natures which will tell how a Pokemon will gain Stats.

A Modest Nature will raise a Pokemons SP. ATK growth by 10% and lower their ATK growth by 10%.

However, an Adamant Nature will will raise a Pokemons ATK growth by 10% and lower their SP. ATK growth by 10%.

Does it really matter what Nature your Pokemon is?
Yes.

If you get a Pokemon with a Nature not suited to it's Base Stats, then that Pokemon will have bad growth.

Also, it's sometimes the difference of 20, 30 or even 40 Points on a Pokemon's Stats.
For example-
An Alakazam with a bad Nature will at most have a SP. ATK of 332.
However, an Alakazam with a good Nature can have up to 405 SP. ATK.

That's a 73 point difference!

So you should always check you Pokemon to see if their Nature matches their Stats.

IVs-
Thought Natures were bad?
Welcome to IVs!

IV stands for Individual Values.
This will determine how much your Pokemon is allowed to grow.

Basically, it's a limiter.
Or else, every Pokemon with a good Nature would be the same.
It really strains out the champs from the chumps.

So, to really get a perfect Pokemon, you'll need a good Nature and good IVs.

But, you can really get away with just a good Nature and hardcore EV training.

EVs
Getting enough yet?
Now we'll talk about the soul of Training-
EVs, aka, Effort Values.

Now, every Pokemon will give out EVs and every Pokemon, provided that they gain experience in battle, gains EVs.

But what do EVs do?
Simply, they help boost a Pokemon's stats even more.

Every Pokemon can gain 510 EVs, but only have 255 applied to a single Stat.
Remember that 4 EVs = +1 point to a Stat.

Confused?
Alright.

Let's say that your Alakazam battles a Gastly.
Well, Gastly will give out 1 SP. ATK EV.

So, you must battle 4 to gain 1 Stat boost.

However Haunter gives 2 SP. ATK EVs, so you'll only have to battle 2 and Gengar gives 3 SP. ATK EVs.

And after your Alakazam has gained 255 SP. ATK EVs, that's a total of 63 additional SP. ATK stat points!

Makes a difference.

Serious trainers will only level grind on Pokemon that give certain EVs.
You don't want you Alakazam to gain wasted ATK EVs, right?

The PokeDex link that I posted earlier will also tell you what Pokemon give out what EVs.

PokeRus-
PokeRus (Poke Virus) is some that's rare and not really needed in Training, but it makes things much easier and quicker!

Ready to learn what PokeRus does?
Simple.

They allow your Pokemon to gain double EVs.

How easy is that?

So!
Now when you fight a Gastly, your Alakazam (Provided that he has PokeRus!) will now gain 2 SP. ATK Evs.
Haunter will give 4 and Gengar 6 SP. ATK EVs.

But wait!
There's more!

Yes, you can also have your Pokemon hold a Macho Brace!
A Macho Brace is a hold item that does the same things as PokeRus.

(However PokeRus doesn't lower your Pokemon's Speed. Speed lowed by Macho Brace means that while the Macho Brace is held, a Pokemon will be slower, it has no long term effects.)

So!
With PokeRus and Macho Brace your Pokemon will gain quadrupedal EVs!

Now when your Alakazam fights a Gastly, he'll gain 4 SP. ATK EVs (That's one Stat Point right there!)
Haunter gives out 8 and Genger will give 12 SP. ATK EVs!

See how much faster it is now?

You may be asking yourself, "Prof. Silver! How do I get PokeRus?"

Well, getting PokeRus is a very rare chance.
You might battle a Pokemon in the Wild that has it and in turn, your Pokemon will become infected!

But it's pretty rare.
So, ask your friends!
Chances are, if they have it, they've already spread it around.

How do you spread PokeRus to your other Pokemon?
Two ways.

One, run around like a fool.
Every step there is a 1/255 chance it'll spread to a Pokemon.

Two, have a Pokemon that has PokeRus battle!
After the battle there's a 1/4 chance of spreading.

It's up to you.

Now, once your Pokemon has PokeRus, it'll never go away!
Sort of.

What I mean is, a Pokemon will have either Active or Inactive PokeRus.
Active means that it can spread.
Inactive means it can no longer spread, but the infect Pokemon will still gain the double EV effect.

How do you get PokeRus to stay Active?
Easy, box your Pokemon.
A boxed Pokemon will always keep Active PokeRus.

However, if you leave a Pokemon out of their box for 24 consecutive hours, the PokeRus will go Inactive.

So box em up after Training!

That's pretty much the basics of good training.
Remember!~

Each Pokemon is different and each will grow in different ways.

Also.
Don't be a noob and use Legendary Pokemon.
They're already built to overpower and take little to no effort in training.

Good luck!
