I understand that everyone in the world is entitled to their opinion but would someone please enlighten me as to why one should be persecuted for wanting to marry the person they love? I understand that homosexual relationships are against catholic teachings but is not against catholic teaching to persecute those who are different?
I go to a catholic highschool called St. Joseph's College School and I have four classes per semester and this semester I have Enriched Science, Civics/Careers, Enriched Math and French. My civics teacher is Ms. Spearns and today we were talking about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the rights of homosexuals and marriage. My assumption was that many people would object to the prejudice of homosexuality but I was mistaken... for my own teacher was against homosexual marriage.
My teacher stated that when the same sex desire to marry each other due to their love, it's like "...me marrying my dog because I love him".
I understand that in Canada one is free to voice their opinion but does degrading another human being have any moral value? Comparing another human to a dog is completely demeaning and even though her prejudice was indirectly stated I still detected it and was immediately enraged.
I have two guy friends who are homosexual partners and love each other just as much as any heterosexual couple...and I couldn't have met two other guys as gentle and kind as they are. They are just like everyone else and have nothing wrong with them yet catholics believe that homosexuals are mentally unstable for the fact that they like the same sex, but if this is so, then why do homosexuals exist? If they are such sins/aliens among the human race then why has God placed them among us as equals?
After the class debate of homosexuals v.s. dogs my teacher silenced the class and said, "How about they not call it marriage eh? How about they refer to is as sodomy?". The second I heard this, I gasped, for she used this term improperly. The term 'sodomy' is used in the context of a**l rape...not when one agrees to engaging in a**l sex. Hence she is ignorantly stating that homosexuals are raping each other. If she was educated she would know this but it seems that in the present society baboons can become teachers. Her statements left me in turmoil for the rest of the day.
Although I am not homosexual I do believe in respect for another human (especially one who has higher authority that I do) and that is why I did not speak against her opinion. Her statements about homosexuals were not the only things that disrupted my mental balance; she also persecuted those who defended homosexuals! She blatantly said that those who are catholics should believe what she believes and if we do not do so then we are against the catholic religion. This is a conspiracy! Propaganda! Why are we not allowed to form our own opinions? Must the church revolve around everything we do, say and protect?
It is unbelievable that in our present society a catholic cannot form their own opinions without the catholic church influencing everything they do or say. I have no respect for those who persecute minority groups for their differences and I will always bear hatred for those who instill ingorant beliefs in those who do not know better. It is unjust and thus goes against any type or human fullfillment that we desire ever so greatly.
