Book of Shadows
ENG111 free subject essay: intro
Each human being is blessed with a unique personality that defines them as individuals, but our society constantly alienates anyone who is different to the majority, forcing them to create social groups where they feel welcome. These social groups are known as subcultures, for they are smaller cultural groups that stem from a larger one. As an individual perceived as belonging to one of these subcultures, I have been rejected, criticized, ridiculed, and even feared. This is due to a common, yet often ignored problem known as subcultural prejudice.
This problem is clearly present in our schools, jobs, and even in churches. People belonging to these subcultures have been discriminately denied of certain privileges, just as they were once denied to women and people of color. For example: in West Yorkshire, Dani Graves and Tasha Maltby were kicked off a bus just for being goths. In other cases they are subjected to various forms of abuse, and have even been victims of cruel hate crimes, as was the case of Sophie Lancaster, who was beaten to death for being a “mosher”. As you can see, this problem is as severe as any other type of prejudice; therefore, it should be treated with equal pertinence.
