Oneshot Short Story 4

Darius looked behind him, twisting his body so that he was now faced backwards, but not discontinuing his pace that he had settled comfortably into.

"Hurry up sis! Do I really have to claim bragging rights again this time?"

He twisted his body and nearly stumbled when he did so, choosing to ignore the not so quite chuckle from his sibling.

"You wish, Dare. I'm taking victory at last. All those other times I've lost to you was to observe your tactics. There is no way in hell I'm backing out this time."

Darius shook his head. She said that more than once and each time she was convinced she would beat him, he had an ace in his sleeve. No two encounters were ever the same. Though he has started hinting her, she would take the bait, only to be overthrown by a new surprise in his attack.

Darius arived at the tennis courts and was a bit out of breath. He set his bag down and removed the raquet and balls from their confines, stretching out just as his sister arrived. She promptly removed her raquet and after a quick breather, began her stretching exercises. She corrected her hair, Darius only rolling his eyes and scoffing.

"Your hair is going to look all messed up regardless, why bother?"

"Force of habit." His sister did a quick flip of her hair and then had on her game face. She took her raquet and moved herself to one end of the tennis court, Darius doing the same to the opposite end of the court. He had the tennis all in hand and bounced it on the ground a couple times before smirking and tossing the ball in the air. In a fluid motion, the ball and raquet collided, sending the projectile at high speed in his sister's direction. She was fast to react and with a broad swing, volleyed it back into Darius' side.

This game continued, the points climbing up between them both until they were in a dead heat. They were tied 14-14 and were very tired. Darius was impressed though, his sister never lasted beyond getting 10 points, but had proved him wrong. She was just as tired, but that fire at the beginning of the match was still there, anticipating his every move. The ball was currently in her hand and with a couple bounces, she tossed it up and mirrored his serving style, but the angle that it would be projected would make Darius scramble quickly. The angle was short and a little steeper, the aim was to get the ball close to the net on his side and not collide with the net on her side in the process. Darius was taking no chances and rushed forwards. The ball flew low and fast and only just collided with the top of the net. Darius grinned and backed up, allowing the ball to fall on her side.

"No! It was so close!" His sister clutched her head and sunk to the ground.
"I was so certain it would go on your side..."

"You played a great game though sis," he said, placing a hand on her shoulder, only to have it shoved away. His eyes locked onto determined eyes.
"Yeah, I suppose I did, huh? I suppose in its own way it was a victory."

They picked up their things and walked back home, laughing and in better spirits. There was always another round.

THE END.
