"Boogeyman"
-Mark Evanier
Deep in the night
When they turn off the light
You lie in your bed and you quake
Fear's running deep
At the prospect of sleep
But it's better than staying awake
Each little sound
Is a reason you've found
To imagine an imminent doom
Under the sheet
You repeat and repeat
How there's nobody else in the room
Part of your brain
Does its best to explain
That the tapping is not what it seems
All you achieve
Is a second's reprieve
As it keeps interrupting your dreams
Praying for sleep
You might tally up sheep
Or indulge in your daily review
Always aware
That there's nothing but air
Seperating a monster from you
Finally, fear
Of the sound that you hear
Has you thoroughly frightened and damp
Chilled to the core
As you leap for the door
And you turn on a light switch or lamp
There in the glare
Is the usual chair
Where your clothing is draped all around
Soon you'll have laughed
To percieve that a draft
Has been blowing your wardrobe around
It takes a bit
But you have to admit
That the monster was all in your head
"Maybe", you think
"I'm in need of a shrink"
As you stumble back into your bed
Now reassured
That your fear was absurd
You should sleep like the baby you are
But you're forlorn
Wide-awake until morn
Asking, "Who left my window ajar?"
