Mystery/Suspense
[ This story is about a girl who struggles with the disappearance of her younger brother. The ordeal has affected almost everyone: her mother, her father; the event even stirred awareness as well as rumors with in the small town. Determined to find her brother, 18 year old Kaylee secretly tries to find him on her own, while at the same time struggling to come to terms with herself and her family. ]
Kaylee was in the confinement of her room when she heard her mother's cries as her father continued to scream at her in anguish.
"Don't you understand," she heard her father ask her mother. "The police aren't doing enough! What are they doing, huh? You tell me!"
Kaylee heard her mother stifle a gasp before saying: "They're doing the best they can, Sam." A few more sniffles and breaths of air followed this statement. "They put up fliers, they sent out dogs, they even sent a search team, for Christ's sake. They're doing all that they can do."
From the behind the door, the noise of a chair being forcefully pushed against the floor could be distinguished, followed by a muffled thump as her father finally took a seat across her mother. Kaylee could imagine the look on her father's face: creased and lined with the last few week's trouble and pain, red from anger paired with nights of raw screaming. And her mother's face: probably contorted from trying not to cry anymore, eyes bloodshot and skin irritated from fresh tears.
"That's what you're not seeing, Anna," her father growled. "They are not doing everything that they can do. If they were, they would've found Kyle by now."
Kaylee by now was standing behind the door in her bedroom, barely breathing as she eavesdropped on her parents' conversation.
"Sam," her mother said, struggling to keep tears in. "We should be grateful---"
"GRATEFUL?!" her father bellowed. "NO! WE SHOULD NOT BE GRATEFUL. THE POLICE HAVE PRACTICALLY DONE NOTHING FOR US!" Guessing from the sound of it, he probably stood up again and nearly pushed the chair out violently in the process. "THEY HAVE DONE..." Kaylee heard that he took a pause and drew in a deep breath. "NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY, GOD DAMN, NOTHING."
"Sam---"
"Listen to me, Anna." His voice was barely a whisper now, but still had the fury of a man that had just lost one of the most precious things in his life. "If the police were doing enough, my son, our son, would have been home with us."
At those words, his voice almost cracked. Kaylee's mother suddenly began to sob inconsolably. Even Kaylee, who was still hiding away from this, felt a lump in her throat.
With all the courage she could muster, Kaylee opened the door and stepped out of her bedroom. She barely made a sound as walked downstairs, into the kitchen, within view of both of her parents. They both stiffened when she walked in on their conversation, and so did she. Her father's eyes still held the same anger and hurt when he found out she had lost her brother one morning as they were playing in the woods. Her mother's face is what almost made her break down. It was filled with pain and fear for her beloved son.
"Dad," Kaylee said, her voice trembling. "I'll find him... I know it's all my fault. I should have watched him closer. I promise, I'll try my best to find him again."
"You will do no such thing, Kaylee." He said, boiling with anger. "Are you out of your mind? Do you really think I want to lose another child?"
With that, Kaylee hung her head low in shame. Of course. Why had she not thought of that before she even told them? After a short disagreement with her parents, her mother proposed that she should stay home a few days from school, and that she should not walk outside the perimeters of the house. Kaylee nodded, even though deep in her mind, she had other plans.
