Can you copyright a chord?

Did you by chance consider that almost all fantasy novels borrow somehow from The Lord of the Rings? Being named the "Father of Modern Fantasy" and the second most read book in the world, LotR has idea spawns in millions of popular works. I don't think Tolkien would turn in his grave if he knew that Paolini, and thousands of other authors, decided to write a book about one unlikely person saving the land from tyranny.

It's the same as historic music. I think you should understand this, since you list it as one of your favorite subjects. Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, and hundreds of other artists created works that give us inspiration and ideas today. Modern music everywhere borrows from great historic pieces in one way or another.
