My research question was “how long did it take to complete the International Space Station?”. From what I gathered, the entire process of building the international space station took twelve years. That is, according to U-S-A Today;s “International Space Station: 10 years in the making”, edited by Brent Jones. According to the article, the first piece of the ISS was Zarya, a Russian space shuttle, in 1998. In that same year, the shuttles Unity, PMA 1 and PMA 2 were launched and added on. In 2000, the Zvezda, Z1 Truss, PMA 3, and P6 Truss were also added onto the International Space Station. In 2001, Destiny, Canadarm 2, Quest airlock, and PIR 5 were also built. The S0 Truss, S1 Truss, and P1 Truss were all additions put in place in 2002. In 2006, the P3 Truss, P4 Truss, and P5 Truss were also added onto the International space station. In 2007 and 2008, the S3 Truss, S4 Truss, S5 Truss, Harmony, Columbus, Dextre, Kibo, and S6 Truss were added on also. Then, finally, in 2010, Node 3 and Cupola were the last finishing touches on the International Space Station. So, all in all, the International Space Station took twelve years to complete. The entire process of making up the idea, however, took much more time. According to Zak Anatoly at www.Russianspaceweb.com, the idea of an international space station was thought up years before hand. However, the actual completion of the ISS is still only twelve years.
