Doctors found out I had scoliosis when I was four years old; they did not have a clue as to how it happened... if it was genetic even. I've been given tests after tests to try and narrow down the causes of my scoliosis I don't remember if doctors even found the cause but had me start treatment first with seeing an orthopedic specialist.
I've been seeing him for years to monitor the curving of my spine and I got my first back brace to help stop the spine from getting worse. I was supposed to wear it day and night and while I was sleeping; let me tell you it was not easy because wearing it made me uncomfortable; it felt like it was suffocating me. I wasn't ready to have the operation; perhaps my body wasn't ready yet. It wasn't ready since the operation entailed I would need rods fused with my spine and my body wasn't mature enough to handle the operation yet.
I continued with the treatment until I left the country for six years and moved back then resumed seeing the orthopedic doctor. In my junior year of high school I finally learned I needed the operation; it was time. The curve was getting worse. I was scared like really scared of what would happened but knew in my mind I needed it to stop the curve from getting worse.
It wasn't easy after the operation or recovering I've been through a lot of s**t. But in my heart I knew if I hadn't gone through with the operation I would have died because the spine would have crushed my internal organs.
I'm grateful for everything just hating being in pain but grateful I took the chance.
