Man's Best Friend Version 2.0

A girl laid asleep in her bed. Her room had metal walls, ceiling, and floor. Everything else contained by those barren walls ws white, painfully so. The whole scene appeared to show no feeling, no emotions, nothing individual, as did every room, in every building, everywhere. A small dog broke the stone-like silence an dlept up on the bed. It rubbled its cold nose into the girl's face. Her eyes slowly blinked open as the dog yipped several hollow robotic barks. The girl reached behind the dog's ear and turned a switch, stopping its movement.

The girl smiled at her metalic friend as she placed the dog on a table and headed for her kitchen. 'Soy milk, tofu sausage and egg subsitutes, a perfect breakfast for today.' she thought as she ate.

When she had finished her meal, the girl opened the door and stepped outside. The thick swmp-like smog that was the air had enveloped the girl. It seemed to capture and hold her, tightly squeezing all of the freshly filtered air from her body. She walked to her vehicile, her shoes clapping against the asphalt as airplanes flow over head. To her their constant hum had become like the sweet birds melody, long since missing from their open skies. She entered the vehicle and programed her desired cordinates.

"To the zoo?" asked a hollow echoing voice.

"Yes." the girl replied. The vehicle shot off as buildings, houses, towers and poles seemed to zoom by her. That day was the day the zoo had been set to be demolished. It had been sold to a large corperation that needed the space to expand one of their warehouses. It was a very small zoo. In fact, it was the last one still standing.

The vehicle slowed to a stop in front of the zoo, and the girl walked under the stone arch way. She found herself becoming part of a huge crowd centered around a solitary cage. Every person in the crowd seem to be glaring at all the others. They appeared to have a horrible contention against each other, with out truely meeting. The girl edged her way to the side of the cage. "Our last best friend" is what the worn out plaque read.

A small dog by the name of Bingo remained behind the cold bars. His light pink tongue draped lazily from his mouth, as he completed his tweleth lap around his enclosure. His soft, wet nose glinted in the light. His fur was varied hues of brown and looked softeer than the finest silk. Yet, his eyes held the most expression of all. They seemed to be smiling, overcome with joy that all of these kind people had come to see him. It was almost too much for the little puppy to take in at once.

A man entered the crowd. He wore a carefully cleaned suit, not a single fold or a strand of hair was out of place. As the man walked into to the crowd his presence hushed the others.

"The last of the uncivilized animals." he said simply to the stone faced crowd as he entered opened the door to Bingp's cage and entered. Bingo's entire body sharply turned to face the man. His face was overcome with excitement as his tail flipped happily from side to side.

The man raised his left arm. In his hand glinted the dark metal of a pistol. As the naive puupy bounded towards the man, he heartlessly pulled the trigger. The quiet explosion was followed by a burst of crimson. Bingo's limp body feel to the ground, coming to rest in a small puddle of his own blood. As his fur began to be tinged red, the joyful, kind and loving glint faded into a cold stare. His spirit had left.

The girl turned her back and began to leave. "What a waste of time." she grumbled to herself as she parted from the crowd.
