High School RP via P.M. With Cassie Mistery
---Why am I here? Oh...yeah...parents wanted me to be independant...alone again... She thought, her eyes closed as she slowly sat up. She was still dressed in some PJ pants with a black sweatshirt. She was in the nurses office and her eyes, a hazel, with a bright green hue opened slowly to look around the room where there was a screen between her and other beds, also, more or less hiding her frame from the other students gettting their meds and vitamins.
She hugged herself, shivering, it was winter and the room was actually warm, but with her small fever she couldn't help but shiver. Her auburn hair, going further down to the small of her back was pulled back into a pony tail. She stood at a height of 5'8 and was a gentle person, but for her height most people saw her as tough. She was the new girl and not used to being at school and not doing well she retreated to the nurse's office as she normally did when having a problem, emotional or not.
---Yet, for him it was just another normal day in the nurse's stretcher. He was getting used to the illness that always hit him one Winter. He had a lot of allergies at that time, and he had hurt his ankle after a bad fall down the stairs. Yeah, such a good school reputation he had... Not really. For Adrik, the dude with the black glasses and the unkempt black hair, this was just normal.
"Hey! Nurse! Where's my breakfast?" he shouted in the room since he was starting to feel hungry.
---She cringed, looking at the screen and she said in a bit of a weak voice. "Can you please not shout?" Her voice broke on the last word slightly and she sighed as she stroked her throat, sticking her tounge out in a sick way, her throat was slightly sore still.
One of the 3 nurses came over with a tray of food. "you arn't the only person here, please be a slight bit quieter." She said in a gentle voice. She put the thray on the table that stretched over his lap before looking over the screen divide to Cassandra asking a question and only reciving a depressed no.
---"Sheesh! Talk about grumpy people" he said out loud, his plan was for Cassandra to hear him, but of course, he didn't know he was actually talking to her. He just grabbed the tray and began to eat.
"This fruits are good! Mmmm-mm" he seemed to have not eaten anything for a couple of light years. "Oh, and thanks nurse" he said to her after realizing he hand't thanked her.
He just looked around for a moment and noticed a faint, depressed no. Without actually knowing that the girl that told him to lower his voice was the same girl that wasn't feeling so good he just said loudly "Want some fruit? I can share"
---She sighed, trying to ignore his word and said with a slight hint of annoiance. "Well excuse me for being me." She shook her head, glancing to the screen, she could see his shadow. "No thanks...I don't want to eat anything." She murmured. The bed creaked as she shadow showed she was lieing down again.
The nurse was now looking back to Adrik and nodded. "Might as well keep your strength up and Cassandra might not want to eat for another day." She said quietly, so that the girl might not hear her really.
---Adrik nodded and then noticed the shadow lay on the bed. "What's wrong with her? She seems to be feeling really bad" he asked the nurse, starting to feel concerned about Cassandra. It was in his nature after all, he just couldn't be his happy self when someone next to him was feeling so down.
He just looked back at the shadow formed on the screen that separated them. In all his time in this school, he hadn't heard that girl's voice. Or at least, not the way it sounded.
---"Stomach sickness, this is also her first year at this school and she never has been to boarding school either." The nurse said with a sigh as she rubbed her forehead. "She has a small fever as well, its natural she doesn't want to eat, we make her trink ginger ale, she can keep that down at least." She sighed. "But in a few days she should be better." She said with a nod.
---"I see..." he then changed his look to his hurt ankle and wondered if he could walk with it, in that state. Being careful he slowly put his feet down on the floor and could feel a small sting on his left ankle. It hurt badly, but he wasn't up for another day in the nurse's.
Even though he was used to the place, that didn't mean he liked it. For him it seemed like a room of mental illness, more than a physical one. He thought that if he stayed there for a whole week, he'd go crazy.
He finally stood on both legs and the pain was unbearable. He sat back on the stretcher and put his leg on it too. "This sucks" he said to himself, and then turned his gaze to the screen. 'I wonder how she really feels...' he thought as he kept quiet for a moment, to bear the pain.
---The nurse had left and so had not seen this, otherwise she would have scolded him, though never harshly as she was really a nice nurse.
Cassandra's body shadow got up and struggled out of bed and stumbled off to be seen to him and disapper into the bathroom, the sink running and she came back out. Her eyes were dull, being tired and her hair was put into gentle waves, but slightly frizzy having not brushed it that morning. She glanced at Adrik, her pants and sweat shirt were rather loose on her. She could barly walk and she flopped back into her bed with a long sigh. "What happened to you anyways?" She asked quietly.
---Adrik just thought he heard something. He was almost falling asleep and that's why he had thought so. "Umh, did someone say something?" he asked as he finally put his glasses on. He looked at the shadow on the screen and noticed that Cassandra was up. "Oh it was you" he said, smiling suddnely for no reason.
"Well, I'm here because I sprained my ankle when I..." he stopped for a moment. He had to decide wether the girl was trustworthy to know he fell off the stairs when he was going to his science class. "Well... the whole school should know by now already... But they don't actually care anymore since stuff like that always happen to me" he finished without actually telling her what happened, but giving her a slight idea... maybe.
---She nodded lightly and glanced lightly to the screen as well. "Well I've been stuck in here, I've seen you around. I'm just sky, unless I really just need to talk..." She said gently. "Well, you'll be better in less then a week. I've sprained my own ankle once playing basketball. I jumped and landed weird on my foot." She said, her voice stopped breaking now as she was saying more then a few words.
She wasn't a really talkitive person, normally, unless she was with her friends, especially close ones like those she had back home. She sighed, propping her pillow agienst the back of the bed and sitting up agienst it.
---"Basketball..." Ardik whispered to himself. "I haven't touched a basket ball since ages" he said remembering his last game. It wasn't that bad... he just finished with a bleeding nose. But at least his team won, not because of his help though. He was know to shoot anywhere but the hoop. He was really bad at it.
"But anyways, returning to the ankle thing... It's not the first time I've hurt it so, it will take a little bit longer... And, sorry for being rude but... What do you know about me?" he asked as the phrase I've seen you around popped in his head over and over again.
---"Maybe you should try agian, over time you can get good after all." She suggested gently and moved the screen so she could see his face at least. "Well, I saw you slip on snow once, but then so did Derek at the same time." She said. Derek was a popular sort of boy and to see someone like him fall was rather amusing indeed.
---"So they were laughing of him and not of me?" he asked spontaneously and then paused. "I thought I was the laughingstock there... Oh well, but it's not like I'm not used to it" he then looked at her face. She had a nice face... Or so he thought, but people always told him he had weird tastes.
He looked at the floor and then at her. He felt shy all of a sudden. Maybe it was the eye contact that intimidated him. "So, why did you come to this school?" he asked, looking at her eyes for two seconds and then returning his gaze to the floor.
---She nodded lightly. "Well everyone has some falls now and then. I bet in broomball I'll fall at least once." She said with a light laugh. But it hurt her stomach to do so and she stoped quickly before looking back at him.
"I didn't have much of a choice, my grades were bad back home, but I don't like it here much, I really miss my friends. You'd like 'em. I could laugh all day with them around." She said remembering a moment she laughed to herself.
---"I bet I would" he said still looking at the floor. "People around here dn't know the meaning of "communication"... Or at least, correctly, that is" he chuckled and then looked at her. "You know, if you need any help... I, uh... Could help you out with some classe" he offered to tutor her.
He was kind of a bookworm and knew already what the teacher was going to teach the next two months.
"What do you say?" he asked her, now looking at his hands slowly closing them in a punch.
---"Well, for one thing I can write better then I speak at times, I can write down my thoughts more then saying them." She murmured and nodded. "I'd enjoy that, I need help, mostly with Spanish though." She admitted but shruged and glanced at him. She saw his hand close in such a way and suddenly seemed a bit nervous. She wasn't too aggesive unless pushed that far.
---Adrik just laughed. "Today's your lucky day! Spanish is my first language" he said to her. He then opened his hands and two pieces of ice appeared in them. The one on the left had the form of "Hi Cas"; and the one in the right said "sandra".
He extended his hands towards her and showed them to her. "Neat, huh?" he asked finally uniting both pieces of ice.
---"And you work with Ice huh?" She asked, or told with a small grin though she let it fade. "Thanks then, but I have to go to sleep..." She said hugging herself with a shudder, showing she felt bad. She slowly closed the screen and her shadow went back down. A nurse came over and made h er take some meds and a clear "yuck" came from Cassandra's side hating the taste of it.
---Adrik saw she closed the screen and he returned to lay on his bed. He put his glasses and the ice mini-sculpture on a small table he had next to his stretcher.
He felt his heart punding rapidly. He had never felt like that, except all those times he was completely abashed, but nothing more. 'Am I... falling in...?' the simple thought seemed impossible to be finished.
He showed her his power wanting to know what hers were, but maybe she wasn't feeling so good to do so. Or maybe... her powers had a secondary effect that gave her some sickness. "I'll just go to sleep and hope this gets healed when I wake up" he said to himself, but loud enough for Cassandra to hear it.
---She had no feelings for him, it took a bit longer then a short talk to really get her intrested, but she felt that at least she might have someone to talk to and learn from now as it was clear.
She had her eyes partly closed listening to him. She could heal him, partly anyways she could take have the pain from a person, but then she was stuck with it and in her state at the moment it wouldn't be a very good idea. Instead she said, quietly. "It'll take longer then that, but you'll get better fast.' She assured him.
---He couldn't hear what she said. He was already fast asleep. Another moment of black dreams, no signs of movement in his subconsciousness. All was black, like a room that was tightly shut. He was the kind of person that didn't get to see his dreams so often.
An hour and thirty minutes passed and then he woke up. He was tired of the infirmary already and it had only been three days. He began to think of all the classes he was missing, which he loved. "Next week is going to be full of homework" he said and let out a sigh. He liked to do his work, but he didn't like having lots of it.
"Nurse!" he called for one and one of the three answered to his call. "What can I help you with?"
"I was wondering" Adrik started, "if I could have a cast on my foot and just go out with crutches or something..."
---The nurse seemed to think for a moment, glancing to a door and slowly nodded. "I suppose so, you can just put on your shoe and I'll give you a note if anyone asks on why you don't have a cast." She went to the room she was eyeing and retrived some crutches to fit him.
A few muffled words came from where Cassandra was as she moved the screen lightly. "you like to be loud sometimes huh? She asked, but she let out a weak smile showing that it wasn't a big deal.
---"Yeah, I do" he answered returning the smile. Finally he was going to go out of that hell known as infirmary, then he looked to Cassandra and whispered to her "You know? If you want some real food, I could bring you some" he smiled lightly and looked around. "Hey, nurse! What if I make a cast of ice?" he asked her, since he didn't know if that would help or not.
---She shook her head lieing where she was. "No, its fine. I mean, I can eat, but the problem is actually keeping it down in my stomach. The nurse said I could try eating some dinner tonight, but not before." She answered pulling up the covers to her chin with another shive from the fever. "Thanks though." She nodded slightly.
The nurse in turn looked at Adrik. "If you want and it would help you heal faster to keep it set stright." She said and nodded.
---Adrik put his hands around his ankle and some ice began surrounding it. After a minute, his whole foot was covered in ice. Good thing his body could stand cold temperatures because of his power, because if not, he'd be jumping up and down because of the cold. He grabbed the crutches the nurse had brought him and practiced walking with them. "It's not that hard..." he said and then looked at Cassandra. "Oh, my name's Adrik. I kinda forgot telling you that. I'll see you at night with some food" he said as he went out the door into the snowy fields of the school.
---She nodded at him with a smile. "Good to meet you then Adrik, and thank you again." She said before shutting her eyes once more.
She was up, it was near dinner time and her fever had retreated, but barely. She sat up iin her bed being propped and was watching cartoon network since they didn't allow MTV to be on in the nurses off. Lower school kids did come in now and then.
---Adrik looked at the watch and went directly to a vending machine. "Nothing better than candy when you're sick" he said as he grabbed some chocolate chips cokkies and some oatmeal ones. "Now, to drink... A bottle of water"
He had all the food in a small backpack and headed to the nurse's. He knocked at the door. "Anybody home?" he asked as he pushed the door open and saw Cassandra watching television. "I brought you something" he whispered and went towards her.
---"Yep." She answered hearing his question. She smiled, clearly glad to seem him again, but mostly as compony as she was in one of the private nurseing rooms to recover. Cassandra did seem slightly better, her hair had been clearly brushed and she seemed a bit more awake as well. She moved her legs under the covers so he could be able to sit down and she nodded towards him. "Thanks..." She said and after a moment added. "I've been having to thank you alot already today huh?"
---"Umh... nah" he said as he checked the halls of the infirmary for a nurse. Noticing that the cost was clear he took the food out. "I brought you cookies and water... If you want milk, I can go look for some... But now I wonder why I didn't think of that before, milks and cookies... That's obvious" he start talking alone and then looked at her.
"Oh, sorry, I kept talking on auto-mode... Well, how are you feeling?" he asked looking at her. She seemed a little bit more lively, at least. Soon she would recover, at least he hoped so.
---"Nah, water is fine." She assured him. She listened to him lightly and couldn't help but grin. "I do the same...but...in my mind." She said after a moment. "You can sit down." She said, offering the spot where she had moved her legs so he could sit with her.
"I'm better then earlier, my fever has gone down a bit already, so I might be in here for one more day till its gone. Normally when I'm sick I recover in about two days, rarely three." She said after a moment of thought.
---"Thanks" he said as he took a sit and put the crutches leaning on the stretcher. "It's good that you heal fast... It has to do with your powers, doesn't it?" he asked intrigued. He had been all day thinking about her and what her powers could be. He also thought of how weird it was to have a school for people with powers with nurses without healing powers. But he had arrived to the conclusion that it was after a certain year that powers began to appear. It was an evolutionary event, or something like Darwin-like.
---"I can help heal people, but then I take at least half of their pain. If I'm healing from my own sickness then it is a bit quick." She nodded, but didn't let on to the one other power that she had, yet anyways. She nibbled on one of the oat-meal cookies, thinking that at the moment the chocolate in the other cookies wouldn't help her really heal.
---"Hmm... Interesting. I haven't seen many people with that power" Adrik said out loud. "In fact mine is also run of the mill. Just like fire and earth... So that makes you special!" Adrik said with a lot of energy and then looked at the tv screen. "Tom and Jerry! Yeah, nothing better than those two... But, you look more like the kind of person that would be watching a movie or a soap opera, instead of cartoons..." he commented, not sure he should have really.
Adrik, didn't know why, but he liked talking to that girl. Maybe it was the fact that she didn't see the sign of loser for life stamped on his face.
---"My other power is basic, but much different from yours, lets just say if you had the water element instead of ice I could over power you with my element in practice." She said. In gym class, for those that had their powers, were able to duel with others.
"Nah, I still like cartoons, always have, though I always enjoy movies, though I'm not very good with horrer movies, comedy and action is better." She said with a nod and asked. "What about you?" She didn't get the sign of him being a loser, but she thought that in his own way he couldn't or wasn't a loser. It depended on how you knew and understood people.
---"Me? I..." he paused for a moment and gently stroke his chin pensively. "I like comedy... But science fiction is what I love. Of course, these days make science fiction seem so real, I've been starting to incline to comedy movies" he explained and returned to the topic of her other element.
"Lightning... Is that your other ability? Control of electrons?" he asked, not sure if that was the correct answer, but it somehow made sense.
He looked at the bag of chocolate chip cookies and suddenly felt his stomach grumble. "Before you answer that... May I have...?" he asked and pointed to the bag of chocolate cookies.
---"I like some Science fiction, but I read science fiction rather then watch it really." She admitted after a moment. "Comedy is all I need to cheer up...most of the time, but you need adventure as well." Cassandra nodded
Her eyes seemed to gleam. "Your the first one to answer right on the first try." She said with a grin and she glanced to it and nodded. "Of course!" She said, but not too loud obviously. She took the bag and put it next to him. She had barely eaten any of the oatmeal cookie, but had at least half of the water bottle by now.
---Adrik took the bag without hesitating. He opened it and grabbed one cookie and started to eat it. "Mmmh... Well, you know... It was kind of logical" he started to explain how he knew her power. "Water is a good conductor of electricity... But not because it's water, it's becuase of the mineral it has... And well, in ice, thos mineral are still and can't pass their excited electrons charge to another mineral passing their..." he stopped suddenly and grabbed another cookie. "Ah, never mind... No need for explanations" he finished and smiled gently.
He then looked at her bag of oatmeal cookies. "You should eat that"
---"Well, I didn't know the reason why it was, I just knew thats for sure." She said, but didn't mind when he talked as he did. "Well sometimes its good to know." Cassandra answered with a nod.
She glanced at the cookie she hadn't even finished and took another small nibble before putting it down on top of the back. "I"m sorry...I just...really don't feel like it." She said with a sigh as she took the back and put it on the table next to her.
---"As long as you eat them later I don't have a problem" he said and then looked at his watch. "Yikes, it's late... I gotta run... Erh, jump actually" he said laughing a litlle bit. "I'll be back tomorrow with something more nutrtional... and thanks for the cookies" he said as he looked for his crutches.
"Sleep well" he said opening the door, but still not going out of the room.
---"Well, get better soon yourself.' She said with a nod. She watched him silently when he paused in the door and after a moment she replied. "Same to you Adrik." With that she turned out the lamp by her and the bed creaked as she snuggled up into her blankets.
---"Sweet dreams" he whispered and then went out of the room.
After a small while he had arrived to his messy room. He couldn't believe how unorganized things were even wen he didn't get to use his own room. Newspapers and science magazines were scattered all over the floor, dirty clothes were also on the floor and his night table was full of a lot of letters. The only thing that was neat and clean was his bed. The one that he was lying on right now.
Morning came, and Adrik woke quite early. "Maybe I'll check how Cassandra's doing before I get to my first class" he said to himself.
---She was up in the morning, feeling much better now, able to eat more, but not too much. Her fever was down so it was a minor one and she was walking around the infirmary, dressed in different PJs. She was standing by the door where people got their meds, talking to a guy named Cullin. His hair was a pure red while Cassandra's had some blond in it. His green eyes taking her in as they talked. Though eventually she had to go. She rarely talked with Cullin
---Crutches on hands, snow falling graciously around him and about an incha and a half of snow on the sidewalks. It makes you wonder how he could even move from one place to the other. But, 'twas'nt impossible.
After ten minutes he reached the infirmary, his jacket completely white at the moment. He knocked quickly three times and awaited for someone to open the door. One of the nurses (the one that was in charge of him when he sprained his ankle) opened the door. "Why, hello Adrik. You seem to be doing better" she said as a slight smile was put on her face. "Umh, yeah" he chuckled and soon entered the room.
It was warm and dry inside. He looked at the nurse who was closing the door at that instnat. "Excuse me, is Cassandra awake?" he asked her an then she nodded. She was on her way to look for her.
---"I'm here." Cassandra's voice said gently from behind a screen. She sounded better and could certainly talk better as well. She peered around it to see Adrik and smiled at him approching, dressed in a long, dark green night gown.
Her dark brown eyes were gentle, but brightening with renewing energy. Long locked of auburn hair going gently down her back.
She looked at Adrik seeing him on the crutches. "Have a good time wandering through the snow?" She laughed lightly noting the snow on his jacket.
---Adrik sweatdroppen as the question was made. "Well... I kinda did... Let's just say it's something of my element" he said... but why the heck did he have to say that?
"So someone seems to be a little bit gay today..." he said as he looked at Cassandra.
It was normal for Adrik to use certain words that for old people meant one thing and for young people it meant another one. But, after recognizing the double meaning of this word he cleared his throat and re-phrased his comment. "Gay as in happy... Not the other way around" he was somehow ashamed. And it would seem random enough to scare someone.
Nevertheless, he added a smile to his sentence and behind it he hid a greatly embarassed Adrik, afraid of the world and waiting for the ground to swallow him... crutches and all.
---She smiled lightly. "I know what gay really means, other people just found a different use for it now." She concluded with a nod. She looked at his ankle for a moment before motioning to a seat. "Sit down for a sec. I'm gonna heal you, besides I don't mind. I am gonna be stuck in here still they don't know why I can't eat still." She said with a shruge pulling up a chair for him.
She looked said agian loosing that bit of spirit that had decided to come back for a bit.
---"That's good" Adrik commented about the gay meaning. He went towards the chair and sat on it. "So it seems I'm finally going to see some healing action" he said as he put the crutches on the floor and looked at Cassandra.
Suddenly, the bright air that filled the morning got heavy and gloomy. Her face expression had changed, not in a drastic way, but you could see it in her eyes. The small amount of life she had in them sudenly vanished and her eyes became dull. After all, it was true that the eyes were (and still are) the windows to ones soul. "Well, let's see you in action" Adrik tried not to talk about her feelings. He wasn't quite the person to start a serious conversation when he could just try and make the person feel happy making a fool of himself. Yup, that was always the plan.
---She nodded simply and undressed his foot to clearly see, or feel where the injury was. Cassandra applied gently pressure onto the spot as she closed her eyes. Her hair flew back as if a breeze swept it up and a gentle green light came from her and onto the injury. a black stream of his hurt coming back in return. When done she rose, but limped, just fairly. It was barly noticeable. "You'll be able to walk, only with a slight limp though." She answered. A nurse came in and saw this and scolded Cassandra who was still a bit sick after all.
But with the nurse's loud, harsh voice she seemed...rather taken aback. Sensitive people tended to take harsh words seriously and so shouting could be like daggers to one's heart.
Adrik felt a weird sensation running through his sprained ankle. And in a couple of seconds, the green light that had surrounded it, took all the pain away, or so it seemed. "Thanks" he said and noticed that a nurse had gone their way.
The nurse continued scolding Cassandra and Adrik wasn't the kind of person who would just shut the nurse... He didn't have the courage... But maybe, maybe he didn't wake up as Adrik that day. "Excuse me nurse! She was just helping!" he interrupted her and continued. "She just helped me with my ankle! See!?" he started moving it.
It was obvious that Adrik didn't know much about healing. He didn't know that some of his pain would have been sent to Cassandra's body, if he would have known that he wouldn't have accepted her offer. He just looked at her and saw how her world seemed to be on a crashing course towards depression after that rude and hurting speech of the nurse.
The nurse scowled and left. Cassandra smiled gently back at Adrik. 'thanks." She murmured. She wasn't always that well at sticking up for herself, especially with adults. Cassandra sat on the bed and looked up as one of the kinder nurses came over having heard all of it. "I'm sorry sweety." She said gently trying to make her feel better. Rubbing her back gently as Cassandra buried her face in her arms. "I hate this school." Was all she said and she broke down. The nurse looked over at Adrik and started saying that he should go. But Cassandra stopped her. "No...he can stay."
Adrik was about to go when he heard Cassandra. He looked at her and her wet face. Her tears seemed to fomr rivers on her mountain delicate cheeks and they fell like a dropplet of a waterfall into a great abyss that ended with a splashing death sound.
"I hate this school!" Adrik, 12 years old, said to his mother when on vacations.
She just ignored him. SHe used to say he was a small child and he had to broaden his horizons and open himself... That never actually worked
There he was, the nerdy Adrik getting closer to Cassy, putting his glasses back to their usual position (in front of his eyes, and not on the tip of his nose), and just opening his mouth as if about to say something, but no sound coming from it. He knew how that felt, how to wish to be far away, so far away that no one would ever bother you again so you could just, for once, think about whatever you want... Be free... Be you and not feel rejected.
"Don't cry... You'll ruin your make-up" he said as he gave her a light smile, after all, she wasn't wearing make-up. He could get a hold on one of the tears that was falling on her cheeks and then froze it on his index finger.
"I can't help it...words...are stronge agienst me..." She murmured trying to calm down. Cassie, Cassandra sighed taking in a shaky breath. She looked at his finger as the frozen tear stayed there. She leaned her head on the wall next to her bed.
"I'm so...tired of this place. I have no friends, though when meeting you...I felt a bit better, even if your not that popular." She said with a weak little grin. They were alone and she was happy to be with her friend. Or he whom she concidered a friend. She was naive and trusted people sometimes too easily. She hated it when people betrayed her.
He was about to say something that would try to make her cheer up, but as soon as she got to the part of "even if you're not that popular" he just answered without actually wanting to.
"Excuse me! But I AM quite known around this place! I'm pretty popular" he said as he tapped his newly healed foot on the ground. "I mean, when people talk about the latest and ugliest fall of the year... Who do they talk about? ME of course! And what about the only student that gets a perfect with the annoying math teacher? ME!" even though this wasn't a part of his plan, this could make her feel happy, maybe even laugh. "You don't hear the popular guy's names so much as mine, do you?" he said, but this time he couldn't stop hismelf from smiling really widely, almost crying because he was holding his laughter.
She wasn't laghing. She was actually really thinking for a bit before grinning. "Actually that is pretty true." She smiled and patted his shoulder. "You need to laugh then do it, don't hold it in. Its gonna kill ya!" She said pretending holding in a laugh was a big deal. But it was clear he made her feel a bit better.
It was a bit strange. She felt some affection for him, but only as friends at this point. But when she thought about it, she was really greatful about the fact that he was with her. She put the side of her head on his shoulder. "Thanks for visiting me." She murmured quietly into his ear.
He finally let his laughter out, huge sound of "HA HA" mixed with a sudden sound only made when inhaling too much air. Yup, that was his laughter all right. But soon it ceased. He felt Cassey's head fall gently on his shoulder and he suddenly froze. The only girl that was ever that close to him was his smaller sister which was five years old.
Adrik suddenly felt tense but tried not to show it so much. Even though, when he opened his mouth it was really noticeable that he wasn't used to those kind of things. "Don't... m-m-ention it" he stuttered just in one word. 'Oh great... stupid nerves...' he thought as he also sighed in his head.
He wondered... 'Am I... falling in love?'
She noticed how nervous he was and moved her chin off of his shoulder blushing. She murmured a small sorry to him. That was the first time she seemed to make someone really, that nervous.
She looked at him for a moment in a thoughtful look. She took his glasses off and said gently. "Don't squint for a sec. I want to see something." She said and smoothed back his hair in a way with her fingers. Looking at him she smiled. "You should get contacts a bit and sometimes comb your hair. You look handsome." Cassy said with a small smile as she settled his glasses back on his face carefully.
It was hard not squinting, but everything returned to normal just as soon as his glasses were back. "Well... Once I tried contacts, but not for the looks really. Anyways, it wasn't a good experience..." he started saying and then his neves had gone away. "I had chemistry laboratory that day... And well, I touched some elements with my hands... I didn't quite washed them well and then I had to move the contact lense I don't even remember what for... It wasn't pretty" he said as he shook his head and got somewhat closer to her. "If you want, you can ask any of the nurses how bad my eye was. You'd be surprised" he whispered.
About the hair... He would have combed if it wasn't winter and snow was falling... But he didn't want to sound mean so he just let it pass. Of course, maybe if his hair was combed she'd still experiment with it.
"Just be thankful you don't have to use glasses... or are those contacts you have on?" he asked now taking a closer look at her eyes.
"Well...ow." She said after a moment of looking at him. "Well you could try again, though I'm not forcing you." She pointed out quietly. She noticed he had moved closer, they were touching slightly now, but she didn't mention it as it wasn't a big deal with her.
"No...I did have glasses to read once, but I got rid of them. I didn't really need them. I only used them because I used to play the game boy really close to my face. The glasses helped, but I don't need them now. But I don't hold books or gameboys close to my face anymore." She said with a small laugh.
Adrik laughed with her. "Well... I have glasses because when I was little I always wanted to have them. I mean, my mom and dad had them, and so did my grandparents. And every night my mother would tell me... Don't watch tv so close, Adrik!" he imitated his mother's voice at the last sentence. "So I did... not listen to her, and I ended up with glasses!" he smiled with a victory grin.
Suddenly the bell rang. "Oh great... I gotta go..." he said, feeling interrupted.
She smiled at him with a nod. " Well, you shouldn't need the crutches, you might walk with a small limp, but nothing much.' She assured him. Cassey got to her feet. "Well talk to you late maybe huh?" She asked and give him a friendly kiss on the cheek and a small pat. "Have a good time." She said and retreated behind the screen to her own bed.
He just waved like an out of order machine, never knowing when to stop. Suddenly he woke up from that quick spacing out and grabbed his crutches. Walking, he gave the nurse the crutches and opened the door. "See... ya" he said and left for his classes.
He couldn't concentrate, all the time he was thinking about Cassandra and the kiss, even though t was on the cheek. He was daydreaming and once in a while he was called back to earth by his chemistry teacher. It was going to be a long day...
the day passed rather quickly and Cassandra stayed still in the nurse's offic. They couldn't find out why she couldn't eat sitll when she was perfectly fine and decided to keep her in another day before they'd have to take her to the hospital, for elementals of course.
She was getting weak from the lack of food, but still couldn't eat a thing, except drink gatorade and water of course.
Adrik was lost in thought as he put his books inside his locker. In the moving of books to and fro he found a picture of his family. 'I miss you...' he thought as he placed it on top of all the books and closed it.
He had gotten used to walking again, no hunchback of Notre Dame for walking weirdly. He kept walking automatically, his intention was on going to his room and start his homework so he would finish it early, but his feet took him directly to the infirmary. That was odd... But then again, he had been thinking about her all day.
He knocked in the door as usual and his head popped inside the room with a wide smile. "Hi Cassandra"
She loooked...pale, from lack of sunlight and food, but a spark of energy glimmered in her eyes and she turned to look to Adrik as he came in. It looked as if she were waiting for him and had spared only her smiles and happiness for him being there.
The nurse had noticed this, she was happy to Adrik's sudden apperances compared to those of her classmates. She chuckled a bit and closed a curtain so they could talk as they wished without others watching or disturbing them as others wre coming for their meds and such.
Cassandra sighed. "How are ya?" She asked, leaning back to the pillows she had propped up so she could sit up for him. The glimmer staying gently in her eyes.
"I'm doing well!" he answered, still wearing that same smile he always had when visiting Cassandra. Now that he noticed, he never smiled so much before, unless he was having a good time with his family. "...Even though this day's been weird" he chuckled and then took a better look at her.
"What about you? You look pale... ish" he told her, "You haven't been cutting on snacks, have you?" he asked, almost soldingly, as he imitated their English teacher's voice as he swung his index finger up and down.
She patted the edge of the bed, moving over. Obviously wanting him to take a seat next to her. "Come over here...I missed you." She said gently with friendly affection, maybe a bit more if you payed attention. "Whats weird hmm?" She asked raising a brow in confusion.
She sighed and shrugged. "Haven't been out in the sun for awhile so...yeah." She said with a nod, there were still faint freckles on her face which gave her a innocent, adorable look at times but otherwise weren't always noticed. The nurse though watched them for a moment before putting the bed shades around them so they could talk among themselves while she had to tend to others.
Adrik slightly chuckled, and then added in a low voice "Yeah, I missed you too". Who was this Adrik that was going to sit next to that girl? Obviously it wasn't the usual nerdy and timid one, because if it was that one he had changed a whole lot.
Even though he did seem mor confident of himself, he didn't want to answer what had been wrong that day... Maybe because what was wrong, or actually right, was in front of him. That girl just made him loose his fears all of a sudden.
"Hey, do you think you can walk? Maybe that's all you need, a little exercise!" he told her looking at her face, the one that just made him get lost in his thoughts.
She smiled, glad that he sat down by her. "Well, I'd never see the day when you'd really sit down next to me." She said with a little laugh which was teasing and joking with him.
"Yeah...I can walk. I wouldn't mind hanging around outside. I need it anyways." She said with a grin. She moved to the end of the bed to stand up. She stood up easily. A little bit of color seemed to come up, apperently glad for the chance to go outside. She talked to a nurse and finally got her to let her go, as long as she was with Adrik.
"Great" he said as he walked towards one of the nurses to get his coat and Cassandra's. It was still cold outside, and he didn't want anything to occure to her, after she was still delicate, but a little fresh air was needed from once in a while.
"Should we go?" he asked as he handed her her jacket, and then oofered her his hand. He was truly changing, and it was a change for good. Too bad classes were ending for this semester, and as usual he would go back home with his family for Christmas celebration. He would miss Cassie, but he really wanted to be with his family, especially his sister.
She took the jacket and fixed it on. She was skinnier then before, but she was apperently eating enough so that she was healthy and she was able to walk around for awhile. She zipped up the jacket before taking his offered hand. She looked at him in awe. He sure dind't seem clumsy like he said her was.
She smiled. "Yeah." She said and gladly walked outside with him, a blast of winter air hit her, making her freeze for a moment having not known it was so cold before she seemed to get used to it. People stared at her having not seen her for so long.
"You doing okay?" he asked her, noticing that the change in temperature might have taken her by surprise. Luckily for him, he could control ice and was used to it... Maybe he could do something for her. Using the other hand that was free he made some movements with it, and the chilly wind blowing in their direction turned away to another direction. "That should do it".
Yet, there was something keeping him uneasy. Maybe it was the fact a lot of eyes were watching them. He never liked a lot of people to watch him, he felt as if they were trying to murder him with their gaze or something like that. Nevertheless, he was with Cassie, and that did make things a whole lot better.
"Do you wanna go to somewhere in particular?" he asked, looking at her, before a snowball hit the back of his head.
"Sorry!" yelled a guy that was snowball fighting with his friends.
"Yeah, just a bit surprised is all. I haven't been outside forever." She said, but with a happy sounding voice. She rmembered the first time she'd seen snow she just sat in it since she was alone and just enjoied the cold. She smiled at him. "Your so sweet you know that?" She asked with a little grin and the temperature seemed to grow warmer around them. The snow stayed, but it seemed warmer.
She heard the snowball hit Adrik's head and grinned almost wickedly. "Why don't we join in? The nurses won't let me go anywhere too far after all." She explained with a nod. She looked at the guy who through the snowball and quickly made one and sent it back where it hit his shoulder. "There you go."
"You know, I think we shouldn't" he started saying, as he saw the snowball hit the guy on his face. Ouch!, that had to hurt. All of a sudden, Adrik found it funny, and began laughing a little bit.
He started to cry because of his laughter, and just when he dropped on his knees because he couldn't help it, a snowball slightly touched his hair. His laughter stopping immediately, he looked at the direction from which the snowball came, and without any more delays, he made a snowball of his own. "Aim, set... Fire!" he said as he threw the ball. He then looked at Cassie. "You know, this won't be such a safe place right now" he smiled. It had been a really long time since he actually had a snowball fight.
"Well I thik we need to...I can't be out for long, might as well make the best of it!" She said as she patted another snowball together and hurled it at another guy whoch could make forcesheilds. The snowball blasted on his sheild and he fired one back hitting her in the leg as she tried to dodge it.
She was in the snow, lieing there and laughing. Her slow heat rate, as it was winter went up just slightly so that more color returned to her face, showing that she was happy. She slowly got back up to look at Adrik with a grin. "I know...." She said and put a loose snowball in his face and dashed away.
The only place of his face that had snow was his nose. He wasn't expecting that, and less from her. He gave her some time to run away as he slowly wiped the snow from his nose. "I'll catch you!" he said as he started running towards her, but not as fast as he could.
The funny picture was that he was chasing Cassie, as he also dodged random projectiles of snow. But, soon enough he was close to her. Still running, he told her "What are you going to do now?". And with that said, he tripped.
Maybe if Cassie sidestepped, he would fall with her to the snow... But that depended of her reflexes.
Since it was winter and her weak point of the year her feflexes were a bit slow and they fell into the snow. He on top of her while she had tried to turn after scooping up snow. But she landed partly on her saide and back with his face by her neck.
"Um..." A blush was clear on her face. Most people seemed to ignore them and went back to their snowball fights before tackling each other into the snow. Cassie looked down at Adrik.
His sight, being a little bit blurry because of the fall, didn't let him see what was happenning, until he got his right hand to put his glasses back on place. He looked at her pinkish cheeks and seemed to space out just for one second, until his love buble got popped by reality and he just stayed there.
"Umh, you okay?" he asked her, not moving from his position. She was just so close to him... He wasn't a know-it-all as people tended to call him... Because if he was, he wouldn't be wondering what was that feeling he had in his stomach after a long while ago. No, it wasn't his stomach rumbling for food.
She looked down at him, her gaze clouded with a bit of thought as if she were suddenly tired again. She felt her heart rate speed up for a moment from the fall before relaxing and going back to its slow state, almost as if she were sleeping. She closed her eyes, breathing in the smell of his hair...Wait...why was she sniffing? She shook her head and looked down at him, listening.
"Yeah...I'm okay but I think I have to go." She said as she glanced to the nurse's office by the dinning hall where a nurse was motioning for them to come inside. She pressed her hands at his chest gently and pushed him off slowly as if it took all her effort again.
"Yeah..." he said as he also noticed the nurse. He stood up from the snow covered floor and helped Cassandra stand up.
"You know, you look better already... I think you're just sick of feeling imprisoned in that infirmary. Not that they're bad, but you know... Fresh air is good for health" he said, trying to get the previous moment out of his head, but it was useless.
'...' his minds just focused on the moment.
"Actually its worse being out here. I can die easily, thats why I wear such a big jacket." She pointed out. "Many plants die in winter conditions. My heart rates slows down and my body becomes cold internally. Thats why I'm nearly always in there durning these winter months. But with the virus I"m improving. I can eat a bit now more." She said with a nod.
She smiled and grasped his hand gently in her own with a slightly squeeze before she hugged him. "C'mon, we can get some hot chocolate or something." She offered leading him to the infirmary. The nurse's made the hot chocolate for them and let Cassie turn on the TV as she gently dragged Adrik down to sit next to her.
Adrik followed her as he thought one thing... 'Ice isn't that bad...'
Sitting down with a perfect view of the T.V. he turned to look at Cassie. "Well, is there any special program you'd like to see? I bet you're dying to see Name the Price, aren't you?" he asked, actually joking. Even he didn't like that show, even though it was better than nothing from time to time.
"Well... I'll let you think while I look for the chocolate" he smiled at her and went towards the nurse. This one gave him the hot drinks and a smile with them, it seemed as she was enjoying this scenery more than them. Ignoring that without even noticing it, he had returned towards Cassie. "Here you go" he said, handing her the hot chocolate.
"Maybe." She said with a little laugh. She flicked through the channels, pausing to see him go off. "Okay." She said quietly with a nod. Cassie felt weird. She remembered earlier in the snow when she had landed on him. She wanted that closness again and she blushed a bit. Her heart pace quickened a bit.
She jumped suddenly seeing him before nodding and taking the cup with a smiling 'Thank you'. She tasted it before smiling and looking over at him um. "Um...Adrik...do you like me?" She asked. Clearly shy. But she felt like she just needed to know. He was such a sweet kid and she wanted to be around him. The nurses wouldn't keep her around forever.
He was drinking from his hot chocoalte when she asked him the question, and you can guess the reaction. And as the pandemonium was released at the same time the hot chocolate was spit from his mout, his mind was running crazy.
'Is it that noticeable? Should I tell her now... What should I?' he was quite nervous, to the point that the hand that was holding the cup was shaking a little bit.
"I, uh... Umh..." he started saying with his tongue twisted around his heart. He knew what he wanted to say, but he didn't know if he was prepared for that... But, just being spontaneous for once, he continued. "I... I guess we could say that" he let her know without actually saying it.
That was a good way to tell stuff, just like secrets. "Umh..." he then looked at her and smiled. It had been a long time since his geeky side hadn't appeared, I guess it was saving its energies for that moment.
