Chapter 1
Kam put another packed box down at the bottom of the stair. She had just finished packing up the attic before she started bringing the boxes down. Kam didn’t want to pack up her grandmother’s belongings. Even though she knew better, she still expected her grandmother to pop out from behind a door and tell her it was only a joke, that she wasn’t dead. But Kam knew that no matter how much she wished otherwise, her grandmother wasn’t coming home, she was gone for good. All that she had left were memories and old photos of her grandmother. The pictures always showed her grandmother happy, but when Kam looked at them, all she saw was her own pale face and green eyes staring back at her.
She was just like her grandmother. Same face, same eyes, same waist length brown hair, even the name was the same, except her grandmother went by Maria. Kam wished her grandmother were still alive, though she knew nothing could bring back the dead.
Kam felt a tear starting to form in her eye. As she sat down on the top stair, all her feelings came out at once. Crying made her feel better, though not taking away all the pain.
“Kamaria,” a voice called from the attic, pulling the distraught girl from her misery, as she pushed away the tears.
Kam turned around and opened the closed door behind her. The voice called to her again, beckoning from across the room. She looked around. “Kamaria this way.” Kam wiped away the tear that had secretly made its way down her face. Who is calling me? She thought to herself. She walked towards the back of the attic, afraid, though knowing for some reason that she had to find the owner of the voice.
The voice called out to her once more. “Who is there?” she yelled out. “What do you want with me?”
“To find the answer, you must find the key.” Came the riddled reply.
Kam began looking behind boxes of her grandmother’s old clothes, but as she looked she said, “The key to what?” The voiced seemed to be by the clothing boxes, but at the same time, it seemed to float all around the room.
“The key to Dusk,” the voice said as it faded away. Kam was confused. The key to dusk? Was it a riddle of some sort, needing to be figured out?
“To find the answer, you must find the key,” Kam whispered to herself. “Well then, lets continue searching. The young girl looked in boxes of books, old toys, and even old china before she decided to look around where she thought the voice sounded the loudest, the clothes. Kam didn’t think that a key would be in a box of old clothes, but where else could it be? She had looked almost everywhere else. Though as she was shifting through the box, her hand bumped into something hard.
Kam reached in her other hand to grab the item. It was a small, wooden jewelry box. She looked closely at it. It looked almost new, like her grandmother had bought it right before she died. She decided to open the box to see what was inside.
When she did, she found a beautiful locket. It seemed to be very old. It was gold, with swirling flowers all over the heart shaped front. Kam picked it up out of the box. Even though the attic was cold, the locket itself was very warm.
“Kamaria,” The Locket! Was that where the voice was coming from? She thought silently. Could it be the key? Kam didn’t know for sure, but, being curious, she opened the locket.
It came open effortlessly, surprising the young girl. Kam looked at the inside. There was no picture in it, but merely the symbols of the sun and moon, one on each side. If possible, the teen became even more confused. What was so important about this locket? She thought. But as she looked closer at the moon, she noticed that something was inscribed at the bottom, but it was too small of writing for her to read.
Putting the locket back in place, she ran downstairs, careful to not be seen by her mother, who was cleaning up the bedroom. Kam had to find her mother’s purse. In it, she knew she would find a switchblade that had a magnifying glass in it. Her mother never went anywhere without it.
“You can never be too careful, Kam.” Her mother was always saying that someone could try to hurt her, so it was always safe to carry something that could save her.
After looking around for a few minutes, she finally found the purse lying on a small table in the garage. Kam quickly found the switch blade, and dashed back upstairs to the attic, once again avoiding her mother.
She sat down on the floor by the box of clothes; as she flipped open the magnifying glass out of the blade, gently, as to not get cut. Kam grabbed the locket back out of the jewelry box, and once again opened its front. She brought the glass over to the locket, positioning it over the inscription.
The teen was expecting a name to be written on the inside, but now seeing the word, Kam thought other wise. “Fintos?” She questioned out loud. “What type of a name, or word for that matter, is Fin….” Kam never finished her sentence. As she said the spell, the locket became warm again.
All at once, a bright beam of vibrant light came out of the locket, blinding the surprised girl. Kam became scared. Her body felt as if she was being pulled into the locket, piece by piece. The distressed girl tried to run from the light, but her body was stiff, and she was unable to move. She opened her mouth, screaming for help. The last thing she saw was her mother rushing into the attic, as the room went dark, and the world disappeared.
