Shania Hue walked quietly to class looking over at Robert every now and then. He seemed a bit off to her, she couldn’t place why. He had been her friend for a few years now and he never acted like this unless…
She couldn’t think about that. It was a long time ago, and he had gotten over it. She still couldn’t help it.
“Hey Robert, I have something to tell you,” she said looking into his eyes.
Robert Green had been thinking and walking silently until Shania interrupted his thoughts.
“Alright, but I have to go to the bathroom. Could you tell Ms. Reed that I’ll be late?” He looked a bit shaky and could only think of what was in his bag.
“Sure,” she replied. “I’ll tell you after class."
“Why not now,” he questioned a bit tense.
“It’s not that important, I’ll wait.”
“Ok, hurry up before your late too,” Robert shooed her and she nodded going on to class.
She didn’t know what was taking him so long. It was almost fifteen minutes into class and he wasn’t back. She heard a loud bang-like sound; she dismissed it as someone running into a wall again.
Finally, she raised her hand, with only ten minutes left in class, asking to be excused to the restroom. Ms. Reed agreed and Shania shot out of the room with all of her stuff. She saw caution tape and a police man at the door to the restroom.
“Robert,” she whispered. “I should have known. I should have seen it.”
She ran for the bathroom door and the police man caught her in his arms.
“Robert!” She screamed at him. “Where’s Robert?”
“I’m sorry Miss. I don’t know a Robert, there’s just a…” The police man looked over her, the tears on her cheeks. “Come on. You might be able to tell who he is.”
She followed him meekly and looked around the man as they entered. A stall door had a hole in it, and the whole bathroom was covered in blood. She gently pushed open the stall door and saw what remained of Robert; her dearest Robert.
She fell to the floor sobbing and looking at how he died.
“He locked the stall door, put the gun to his chest, then fired using his thumbs,” Shania told the police man through sobs. “We had an argument over how it’s harder to kill your self with a hand gun; that you can’t pull the trigger. We watched too many of though police shows and court cases, you know.”
The man helped her to her feet and took her to the front office and she passed out.
Robert opened his eyes. He knew he was dead, and that he killed himself. Yet there he lay on the bathroom floor, he blinked and sat up. He was no longer in the bathroom, but in a blank white gap of no origin.
“Well, there he is. I’ve been waiting for you to open your eyes for an hour,” said a voice. It was female and he could tell that. He rubbed his eyes and got up from the floor.
“Where am I?” He looked around and spotted a strange woman.
“No questions yet,” she commanded. “I’m Melissa Poe. I guard the gates to hell and heaven. Well, sort of. I’m more of a temp until they can put my effects in order.”
“Melissa? You went to Haricot High School, you were the head cheer leader and in the French Club. Why did you kill yourself?” Robert looked at her in awe.
“Why did you?”
“I… Err…”
“I know that feeling exactly! Now, you and I have business to do.” Melissa walked over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder, then snapped the fingers on her other hand.
“Sir, I’d like to take my daughter home now,” Robert heard Shania’s mother say. Her father had died several years before. “She’s seen her best friend’s dead body, has been questioned for 3 hours, and she needs to get home.”
Everything came into view: the office of the school, Shania’s mom, the principal, two cops, Shania, and Melissa. Robert looked around and stepped to Melissa.
“This is strange,” he whispered.
“You’ll get use to it,” she said back. “They can’t see or hear you unless your alive, which your not, so just listen.”
“Please, I don’t want to go home Mom.” Shania looked shaken and small. “I don’t want to do anything.”
“Robert would want you to go with your life,” Mrs. Hue said. Shania looked at her, pure anger, and frustration in her eyes.
“You don’t know that. You don’t know what he was like. You never liked him because you were afraid I’d love him. I do love him, and it’s something that I won’t get over easily.”
Melissa snapped again, taking them to Shania’s room. Robert noticed that everything was black, purple, and green with in her room. It no longer held the warm red and brown colors he once knew.
“This is after two months. She got rid of everything that reminded her of you, and took to wearing only black. She quit the gaming club, and her grades nose dived.”
Robert stared at the new Shania as she sat on her bed. Her long blonde hair was gone and was now brown and to her ear lobes. It would be June at this point, and she wore a long black skirt and long sleeved shirt covering her whole body. In the past she had wore bright colors and jeans, with lots of necklaces. Now she wore only chokers and silver earrings.
“I miss you,” Shania whispered. She pulled up her sleeve showing her arms cut in amounts unimaginable. “I know you may not hear me but, when my blood flows I feel close to you. Crazy isn’t it?”
She to a blade from between the mattress and box spring of her bed then slashed her wrist swiftly. She let her wrist bleed onto a silver tray that lay near her bed. “I love you, Robert.”
“Shania,” he whispered and sat on the bed next to her bed. He looked at her and saw her tears being shed. “Don’t cut yourself.”
“But I can’t help it. It’s the only thing that keeps me sane,” Shania whispered. “I can’t help but cause the pain to feel near to you. I just want to hear your voice.”
Melissa clapped her hands and they appeared at a grave site.
“Why are we here?” Robert looked around the lonely hill with one grave stone.
“It’s your grave,” Melissa said solemnly. “You need to save her from destruction. I’ll give you one more shot to save her, but you mustn’t kill yourself or try suicide again.”
“What happens to her?” Robert looked desperate. “What is it that happens?”
“She killed herself. On your grave exactly six months after you did. She drank poison then shot herself in the head. She couldn’t wait the four hours for the poison and just ended it in the second hour. Do we have a deal?”
Robert stared at her. “Yes. I agree to your deal.”
Finally, she raised her hand, with only ten minutes left in class, asking to be excused to the restroom. Ms. Reed agreed and Shania shot out of the room with all of her stuff. She ran right into Robert on his way to class.
“Robert, I was worried you wouldn’t show up again,” she said with a smile. He grinned back.
“Shania, I love you.” She let the smile fade.
“How did you know what I was going to tell you?”
“I guessed.”
They walked back to class and the bell rang to let class out. The last thing that Robert remembered before his mind was whipped his suicide was Melissa walking out of class with her boy friend, and waving to him and Shania.
