Ah, a question I get asked the most! xd
The bare truth is, I don't know 100% why or how the Admins choose who they choose to become mods. I have never been told specifically what exactly they look for in a potential mod candidate. So I am afraid I can not give you an absolute answer on this.
However, from my year and a half of experience being a mod, *I* would say that one should be pleasant, helpful, courteous, and committed. You'd need a solid knowledge of the whole site, the rules, the ToS, and all things concerning Gaia law.
You'd need to be able to show you're committed to modding/helping... that you wouldn't just up and quit or lose interest the next day or month down the line. It's not easy and it can be VERY time consuming and frustrating. So the ability to be committed and patient for the long term would be good.
Be nice and courteous to people when you're helping them. No one likes a snotty snippy mod with a bad attitude. But at the same time, you'd need to be able to be firm and just and get your point across and not be a push-over.
You'd need to be trustworthy and dependable of course. The Admins would have to trust you a GREAT deal to give you mod abilities and you'd need to be able to keep yourself from getting a big head about it and power tripping.
Those are just some of the things *I* personally would look for if I made the decision, but like I said, I don't, so please don't take this as an absolute answer.
However, I do know that when the Admins decide to invite you to be a mod, they send you an invite and you can either accept it or decline it. I accepted my invite, and here I am. To this day, I have never been told specifically why I was chosen among others, but maybe it's best that I not know! ninja
