Prologue

Liu looked around; everything was so bright she felt the cool grass that caressed her feet, as it swayed in the wind. Everything was so lush and beautiful the trees were pink with blooming cherry blossoms. They glistened brightly reflecting there beauty; warm rays from the sun pelted her back making her feel warm and fuzzy. Liu was delighted with the radiant beauty of it all. Then she heard her name being called by a man; he called out to her softly and longingly as if he couldn’t find her. She turned and searched everywhere to locate his voice.

“Who’s there? Were are you?!” She called out to the voice who constantly called out for her.

She whirled and ran across the meadow her short feathery hair waving among the breezes current. She heard his velvet voice call out once more and then it began to fade. She became shocked skidding to a stop; squishing the grass beneath her feet. Her heart longed to here his voice again and it stung like a claw had racked through her body. Her heart raced Liu ran back to were she heard him first. The soft breeze stopped and the grass began to die as the trees slowly began to decay while she scrambled back. The beauty left and Liu was lost heart broken. She fell to her knees and began to weep the dirt was rough and scuffed up her legs. She sat there helpless and not knowing what to do; The dream finally came to a end.

Liu opened her eyes slowly she was still tired; She rested her head back on the hammock. She tried to erase the memory of the dream she had. Her heart was still racing and she still lay heartbroken. Liu’s blanket bundled her softly it was warm as a mother hugging her child. Liu sighed relaxed in her bed, something pressed hard on her leg she sprang up in shock.

“Smoky!” Liu shouted, she began to laugh. Liu held up the black kitten and rubbed against its soft brushy fur.

It mewed softly as Liu set it down, Smoky jumped lightly of her Hammock. She shifted herself sideways and set her feet down on the wooden flooring, it was cold. Winter was here finally, Liu rushed to the window to see snow flakes flouting down reaching the earth. Liu giggled a little as she pressed her hands against the cold glass she felt excitement rush through her. Liu steered herself from the window and rushed excitedly to her door. Smoky bounded after her as Liu bolted out the door, She was halfway down the hall way. Liu nearly set foot on the first step on the staircase when she heard her mother curse in the kitchen. Liu paused for a split second and Smoky finally reached her breaking the silence with a pitiful mewl. Liu looked down and grinned at the little black fur ball that bumped its head affectionately against her leg.


“Looks like moms already got breakfast going, right Smoky?” Liu giggled down to her kitten.

Smoky mewled again as if he answered her question, she picked up him up gently feeling his smooth bushy fur through her fingers. Liu stepped down heavily on the stairs and came to a stop at the kitchen. As expected mom was starting breakfast, the aroma of the cinnamon and cooked butter made Liu’s stomached growl. As she breathed in the mouthwatering scent.

“Hi mom!” Liu said cheerfully cradling the black fur ball in her arms.

Her mother turned one her fingers in her mouth, her mother flushed with embarrassment, she ceased from nurturing it.

“Oh, hi honey,” Her mother replied, “Are you hungry, would you like some pancakes?” Her mother asked feverishly.

“Yes please!” Liu grinned delightedly, her stomach growled once more as Smoky shifted in her cradled arms, trying to make himself comfortable.

Mother nodded and resumed to her cooking. Liu walked over to the cedar table plopping herself down in the chair. The table shined enough for Liu to see her bed head hair, it was all fizzy and puffed out like an afro. Liu snorted in disagreement with the way her hair was and rest Smoky on her lap. He curled in a ball letting his tail rest over his nose. Liu began to mess with her hair it looked so jungle like and seemed impossible to tame with out a brush. She smoothed her fingers through the fuzz only to hit knots in her hair. Liu gave up knowing it was hopeless with out a brush and her hair looked even worse than it did earlier.

Mom set the Pancakes in front of Liu white steam swayed meaning that it was still hot but also fresh. There were sausages to the side of the Pancakes along with scrambled eggs. Everything looked so delicious Liu didn’t even realize Smoky’s big pleading eyes for a little bit of sausage. Until of course Smoky batted at her arm as Liu reached for her fork.

“Hang on there Smoky, we have to say our prayers first, don’t tell me you’ve already forgotten.” Liu giggled taking his little scruffy paws and clasping them in her hands in prayer.

“Blessed our lord for these thy gifts which we are about to receive through thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen” Liu murmured quietly in Smoky’s pointy ear.

“And, God bless the cook!” Liu giggled addressing her thanks to her mother.

Liu’s mom smiled in return and resumed cooking for what Liu guessed was for her father.
