In the event of a larger than average eruption, the communities around Stromboli would be in immediate, immense danger. As the land around the crater of Stromboli has a history of collapse, there is a certain chance that this could happen again if an eruption was powerful enough. Collapse of the Sciara del Fuoco, the current crater, would send large rocks from the slope down the flank of the volcano into the ocean. Although the two villages on Stromboli do not lie below this area on the northwest side, a collapse of this capacity would endanger anybody, tourists especially who may be located around this area during the eruption. San Vincenzo and San Bartolo are most likely to be affected by avalanches and pyroclastic flows, sweeping down the flanks and through and over the village. Bombs and blocks could also pose as a threat to life on Stromboli, destroying homes and businesses, however the eruption would have to be immensely larger than any standard Strombolian activity.
