A very important....
...message from Penny Arcade.

You could almost call it a public service announcement.

"People seem to think that by posting in threads and agreeing with other people they are changing the world. They are not. They are posting in threads online. The universe will not be altered by forum threads, even those which are very wry."
_Tycho Brahe

It's bullocks, as you would have known if you had read the PA forums. razz

The first step on the road to change is people talking to one another.
Now it is true you can't expect that venting your opinion on a webforum will change anything immediately, but when you have a serious discussion with someone and you listen/read to what the other has to say. Your views may change, someone's opinion may change. This are the very basics of how any change in politics and society ever happened.

People talk, people make decisions, something happens.

Right. Of course, because the internet is SERIOUS BUSINESS.

I'm pretty sure that he was referring to the kind of superficial "yes, that's a great idea" bullshit that happens all over the internet including (almost) everything on Gaia. Basically, just saying something should be some way and having some random collection of anonymous people agree with you over the internet does not create any real progression toward something being the way you wanted.

Of course having a real actual conversation might work. The likelihood of actual serious business happening on almost any forum is generally quite low.

Ironically PA has one of the best webforums on the intertubes at the moment. That's why Tycho's comments weren't appreciated by nearly everyone posting on a webforum that is properly regulated. It's kind of silly to think of gaia when you're talking about webforums, no one drops by here to debate about serious subjects, at most people post around here to vent their anger on something or try to feel better about their own wildly revolutionary views.

The OP is on the lengthy side and the first few posts are by people who are running along with the joke Tycho made, but this is the thread about it on PA and a pretty decent example of how things roll on.

It's funny: the joke with the kitties got old real soon, but the moment a mod tells people to knock it off, no one mentioned kitties. If someone *did* make that joke again, s/he would have been banned or jailed for a few days. No excuses, no fancy bureaucracy. That is the difference between the ******** that site-not-allowed/ED and the PA-boards.

Also: I don't consider debating over the internet as SERIOUS BUSINESS, I consider it a fun thing to do when I have nothing better to do. 3nodding
