The world is a cold, dark place. That is what I was always told. I now know that to be a fact. The year is 3150..The end is near.
My name is Toji. Well, at least that’s what they call me. I forgot my real name a long time ago. The world is now a desolate wasteland. Weapons much worse than nuclear bombs have ravaged the earth. These weapons were so destructive that the air from the area simply disappeared, never to return. All buildings and signs of life are destroyed, yet, miraculously, there are still some people alive.
The biggest war in history has ended. Now, the earth is waging its biggest campaign. The last war was man against man, but now we are against Him.
You probably thought I meant God, huh? No, I’m talking about the man downstairs, Lucifer, the devil, whatever name you call him. He has sent his most feared henchman to collect his dues. That’s right, the Grim Reaper. None can escape his grasp...
******
Sirens start to sound. The distant screams and cries for help ring through the muggy, night air.
“And so he comes once again..” Toji says as he looks through a pair of binoculars. Through them he sees a giant deity close to the cliche representations of Death. With his giant sickle, he kills every ‘survivor’ in the already ravaged area. “No man, woman, or child is safe from this...creature,” he said as the binoculars fell out of his hands. As they hit the ground, the lenses shattered. Tears streaked down his cheeks as he fell to his knees and said, “What god brought this upon us..This-...This is worse than death!”
Suddenly, a phoenix flew right passed him as if in slow motion. Its effervescent, red and orange feathers gave off an inspiring shine as glints of gold slid off its body. Toji’s eyes followed it, in total awe of its splendor. “Could that have been..” Toji rubbed his eyes. “No...Couldn’t have been. I just-...Need rest, yeah. That’s all.”
He got up and started walking, to where was unclear. After a couple minutes of wandering, he decided to lay down. “This is as good as it’s gonna get,” he said as he drifted off to sleep.
*****
Toji is running as fast as he can, but there is nowhere he can go. Death is hot on his heels. Toji pushes his body past its limits, and his knees buckle. As he falls to the ground, thoughts of what life could have been like if he was born in a more peaceful era flash before his eyes. He was paralyzed in fear. He could do nothing besides marvel at the massive creature that was about to kill him. Suddenly, the phoenix he saw before appeared right beside him. As the Grim Reaper slowly raised his mighty sickle, the phoenix started to float gracefully in between Death and Toji. As the phoenix nodded it’s small head, Toji’s last word was ‘why’...
*****
Toji woke up with a jolt. Cold beads of sweat slowly drip off his face as he pants. “Only...dream..” He sighs as he stands up. “Better get out of here quick.” As he starts to walk away, the air in the area slowly starts to dissipate. Toji stops dead in his tracks and starts trembling. He manages to muster enough courage to turn around, but isn’t quite prepared for what he sees. “No,” is all he can say. Toji found himself face to face with Death, literally.
*****
This can’t be real... This is just like my dream. If that’s the case... That phoenix will come! Argh! What the heck am I thinking! That couldn’t possibly happen... That dream was not a premonition.. Merely my mind thinking about that image. Yeah, that’s it! Ah, who am I kidding. My dream really is coming true...
*****
Toji’s eyes frantically searched for any signs of the phoenix. “I don’t want to die! Please! Help me!!” Unfortunately, his pleas went unanswered. As Death’s sickle slashed through Toji’s body, he saw the phoenix float above the Grim Reaper.
He doesn’t know how exactly, but Toji, well his soul anyway, is now in a room. This room was unlike anything he has ever seen before. One half of the room was darker than the shadows. The other half was as white and pure as the moon’s shine. Right in the middle of the room where the light and darkness meets was a small sapling. This small tree bore nothing but dead fruit. As each fruit fell, they instantly burned up, leaving no trace of their existence. Perched upon this sapling was the phoenix.
“Why! Why didn’t you save me?!” Toji said as he walked towards the bird. It merely cocked its head and cooed. “You!” As he reached out to strangle the innocent creature, giant flames appeared before him. As the phoenix brought its wings back, it turned into a human from the tail up.
It was now a beautiful woman. She looked to be twenty-one, but you could see thousands of years of knowledge in her eyes. She wore a dress that had a slit that went above her knee, and there was a ribbon that was tied at the back. This woman had long, black hair that flowed as if there was wind. Under her left eye was a mark that looked like yin-yang.
“Enough!” She yelled at Toji as he trembled. “Why did I not save you? You know nothing!!” Toji clenched his fists as he said, “You didn’t come like in my dream! I died!!” “So are you saying you would have rather lived? Constantly running away from Death?” Toji remained silent. “Do you want to know the truth, Toji?” “Well..y-..yeah,” he mumbled as he wondered how this woman knew his name. “I SAVED you. Yes! I saved you from a fate MUCH worse than dea-” “What could have possibly been worse than that?!” “SILENCE!” He grit his teeth and glared at the woman. “Apparently you aren’t getting the bigger picture. First of all, I’m God. Surprise. Secondl-” “Wait! Isn’t God supposed to be a man?” “Secondly, the Grim Reaper works for me.”
Geez, how could this rude woman be God, Toji thought to himself. God cleared her throat. “So you doubt me? Look at the tree. There is but one fruit left. You, oh omniscient one, are about to witness exactly what I have saved you from.” As the last fruit fell, the flames it burst into created a gigantic screen. The screen was separated into three parts. One part showed the universe. Another showed the Milky Way, and the final part was filled with various cities on earth that were still filled with people. The terrible scene that followed took only a minute to unfold, but to Toji it seemed to take an eternity to finish. Starting at the earth’s core, the entire universe imploded. Flames and magma engulfed the earth’s surface. The worst part was that people did not simply burn up and die. They didn’t die until the end of the implosion. In their last seconds of life, they screamed and tried to escape the fire, but their efforts were for naught. In the end, everything was gone save for a few remnants of stars.
Toji fell on his knees and bowed his head. “I understand now... Please, forgive me for doubting you.” As a tear slid down his face, God went down on one knee and lifted up Toji’s head with her hand. She flashed a small smile and said, “Go. Be in peace. Live out the rest of eternity in the place you belong.”
