The 2007 Eisner Nominations have been announced!
So, what are the Eisners? Basically they're the highest awards that the American Comics Industry gives out. Essentially they're the Oscars of the American Comics scene.
Some interesting changes and additions have been made to them this year. Most notable is the addition of a "Best U.S. Edition of International Material-Japan". This is basically a "Best Manga" category and was probably added so that other countries would be still be able to get an award in the "Best U.S. Edition of International Material" category. They've also changed "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition" to "Special Recognition" for some reason as well.
In addition to getting its own category this year, Manga has quite a presence elsewhere in the awards as well. Monster is up for "Best Continuing Series", and Tezuka's Ode the Kirihito turns up in the "Best Archival Collection/Project—Comic Books".
Tokyopop's OEL series pop up in several categories as well, with Becky Cloonan's East Coast Rising garnering a nomination in the "Best New Series" category. Dramacon and The Abandoned also turn up in the "Special Recognition" category.
