Chapter 4: The Witches' stories
Chapter 4:
The Witches' Stories

“All right everybody, listen up! I think we shall start with the past, because every present has its past, which is known to repeat it’s self. I shall start with how we came to be.” said Ms. Frelox, everybody excitedly gathered around her. No matter how many times we hear this story we all love it as if it were a story about Cinderella told to young girl, thought Jade.

“Well, long ago, before the ages of man or animal, the sun had rose and set for nobody. God could see how bare and bland his miracle creation had become. So he brought his council of angels together, they decided that the world know as Eaonth would need inhabitants. But, we now call Eaonth Earth because the gods and his angels had such a complicated language that people living on Earth could not possibly pronounce it. All thought many people have tried, thus forming the different languages of the world today. They brought together all of Reusan, the angel world, to create there beings. They started with the simple beings of rodents, then on to marine animals, and finally, the most complicated, mammals. They also felt that everybody needed a leader so than on to the complex humans. Evon, an extremely curious and creative angel, suggested that humans have emotions like the angels, and looked like the gods did when they were in their mortal form, as a form of unknown worship towards the gods. She was praised for her idea, from then on everybody had went to Evon for help or advice. After years of this, she became a god, Evon the goddess of Intuition. Her life was filled with worship and treachery, but that is a story for another time. The angels had called each individual kind “Evon majesties”, which in English had come to be known as species. God sent his creatures down in stages as to not overwhelm them. The last of species to take the trip to Eaonth was the humans. The humans and the animals were the perfect inhabitants. Harmony and peace had a place on Eaonth. The sun rose and set with glee every day. The angels took great interest in watching the humans adapt and thrive in their new environment. The gods had created a perfect heaven for their universe. Everyone was happy and content. But, that is not how it is today.” said Ms. Frelox ominously.

“What happened to the angels?” asked Sean as he unnoticeably squeezed Jade’s hand; well it was unnoticeable to everyone but her. It was then that Jade realized with a shock that he was still holding her hand. I hope he never lets go Jade thought romantically.

“They’re still up there today. Watching down on us as the saints they are.” Ms. Frelox said while looking up at the white ceiling, an angelic expression on her face.

“And Evon? What is her story? What did she do?” asked Sean quizzically.

“This is a rather long story. You are not the first to ask. Her involvement is the reason why, and when I say we, I mean witches, are alive today. She is the reason why we were ever created; we are a mistake, a curiosity to many, with disastrous consequences. She thought we would worship her, boy, was she wrong! Evon, the goddess of intuition, is the bane of our existence, she is the resentment in our voices, she is why we are feared, she is why we must hide, she is a punishment, but, she is also a wonder, she is a deifier of rules, she has wronged many, and she had been murdered for her dastardly dead.” By the end of her speech Sean had been burning with curiosity, but suppressing it with fear.

“Don’t worry it’s all right.” Jade whispered in his ear, while squeezing his hand.

“Well, first you need to know how Evon thought so that you can understand her decisions. Evon was a blonde haired angel; I am not talking about her species either. She was kind, she was forgiving, and she had a heart of gold. She was the epitome of loveliness; she had given Aphrodite a run for money, so to speak. She had vibrant blue eyes that whenever Poseidon looked into them he swore they were more beautiful than the ocean on a warm summer evening. Which was a great honor seeing as how Poseidon loved his waters more than anything in the world. She was the daintiest and fairest creature in the world.”

“Past tense?” Sean asked, while glancing quickly at Jade, and then Violet. Jade had to resist the strong urge to punch her sister when she saw that flirty smile on her face.

“Well, the day before her death, this is what she had looked like.” she replied while handing Sean a photo. He took it gently, noticing the slight rips on the side. It was a picture of Evon. All though the color had faded he could tell that from what Ms. Frelox told him, that her puffy, cloud-resembling hair was a tangled mess on her head, and it had also lost its luster. Her blue eyes were no longer vibrant oceans, they were now murky puddles. Her skin was blotched, either from sleep deprivation or she had been sick for a while. You could tell just by looking at her that she was no longer the ‘daintiest creature’ and far from the ‘fairest creature’ in the universe. Her ribs and the bones in her arms stuck out at odd angles, but not as if they were broken. Just then Ms. Frelox had started another story about Evon, interrupting Sean’s analysis.

“After the sun had set three hundred times Evon could take it no longer. This was her first night as a goddess. Now see, angels and gods could take the form if humans, when they wanted to. Just seven sun rises ago she had had her life wrecked. For the last few months before that, she would take the form of a human and one time she had done so and fallen in love. He was a boy named Ramussen, he was everything she wanted, athletic, strong willed, smart, caring, and sweet. Then a week ago she had found Ramussen with somebody else, she would never forgive him. Her heart had been broken, her conscious not quite clear of sympathetic thoughts. Her life was once a cherish, a life to be lived, a song to be sung, a book to be written, a thought to be finished, but why had fate thrown her such a curve-ball? It was because of her past, her present, and her future. Destiny had not meant to have her meet Ramussen, so the course of her life had to be changed, it was just a matter of time before her radiant life turned into a prison cell for her to endure. Day in and day out she wept, but she could not fight fate, it was an invisible force guiding, or as she thought of it, shoving, her down the path to fulfillment. After twenty sun rises her tears dried, her heart put back together, her thoughts straightened, but her soul would remain a desolate black hole, never to be warmed by the touch of a loved one.”

By this time Lucy and was crying while Elizabeth comforted her. We all had heard these stories, they were not Cinderella stories, and they had Hamlet endings. Where the cherished had been taken and the unwanted forced upon them. But this was not the reason that she had been crying, she just remembered the desolate destructive person that had her life destined this way, our Aunt Rosie, or Rosalie as she had demanded us to call her after that faithful day. Our poor aunt Rosalie, Jade thought as her eyes started to tear up.

“Don’t worry everything is all right.” Sean comforted her while he, yet again, squeezed her hand. This time he noticed her heart rate increase and threw her a blinding smile and showing all his teeth. Jade’s head quickly turned to hide her blush, a smile threatening to appear on her face.

“NO! It is certainly NOT okay!” shouted Ms. Frelox. “Do you realize that this is the same fate that Jade’s aunt Rosalie met? Are you the one that had to watch her suffer? Rosalie was like there other mother, and then one day she just came over and told them that she never wanted to see them again! Imagine what-“she was cut off by Lucy.

“HOW DARE YOU! You speak as if you were the one hurt! How could you possibly even try to believe the pain I was in! I was only eight-“screamed Lucy through her tears. Elizabeth tried to comfort and quiet her at the same time while putting a hand on her shoulder.

“Luc” Elizabeth muttered. Lucy turned on Elizabeth; she glared and abruptly swiveled around to face the stairs.

But, before rushing down the stairs she said calmly “Elizabeth, I only needed you as another mother because Rosalie left. I never wanted another mother, I wanted a fun older sister, and now that person is Jade. You always told me I acted older than I was. But, you still have to remember that I’m still an emotionally scarred kid. I have never grown up since then. I have always done what you told me to do, that stops now.” Lucy walked grimly down the stairs.

“Oh! My poor baby!” Elizabeth cried out the tears she was holding back. “I’m so sorry! Please forgive me! I just wanted to make you happy!” Just than Christine threw her arms around Elizabeth, to make her stop her incessant sobbing. We all knew that this was exceptionally hard on Lucy, she was the closest to Rosalie, and thus, making it hard on Elizabeth. Lucy never knew how good she had it, with somebody to help her every step of the way. While I was forgotten, left alone to wallow in my own tears. I always blend into the background, Jade thought; maybe I can go over Rae’s house later and ask her for some help.

“We will continue our discussion next week.” said Ms. Frelox coldly.
