Okay, here's the deal:
You take a good, old movie and you remake it. That's Hollywood's formula. I'll admit, some remakes I like better than the older versions. A great example (hopefully) is True Grit. It seems hugely promising. TRON not so much simply because it lacks all the things the original had. Star Trek? I thought it was really good, albeit a little dragging. I do not like The Dark Knight in the least. Don't even get me started. There are the good things I can point out, but there are many more things I DON'T like about the movie.
HOWEVER, that's not why I'm writing right now. Why I'm writing is a common reaction, but it's a majority reaction and it's one that gets on my nerves.
*movie preview that looks kickass* OH man that movie looks good!! *starring Mel Gibson* OH YEAH *with Angelina Jolie* GOTTA SEE IT! *also Johnny Depp* SWEET *along with Robert Pattinson* :/ I'm not seeing that.
Oh, really now? Yes, like THAT makes a whole ton of sense. Firstly, I'm sure that most people would do this only because of Pattinson's role in Twilight and not because of his skill/talent whatever you call it. The majority would remember hearing fangirls squealing about Pattinson and then they'd be like "OH NO NEVER MIND." But my POINT here is that the viewer wanted to see it in the FIRST place, so why let one actor that you don't really like ruin the whole of a movie you may like anyway? The viewer may have only seen Pattinson IN Twilight for their teenage daughter or something, but that's only one thing you saw him work in. Actors, if they are good, are MEANT to be versatile, and who knows? That actor that you don't really care for may surprise you.
And, a bigger case-in-point, so might the director. I can't stand Tim Burton's work (don't even get me started), but I LOVED his collaboration with Sellick on Nightmare and Big Fish. Edward Scissorhands was good, and I was surprised to see Winona Ryder (who also played Beth in Black Swan, one of the newer movies in 2010. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it) in Ed Scissor.
Even more, Johnny Depp: He's played so many roles, been so many different people, it's insane. And the same (for an older audience) can be said of Robin Williams.
Just a rant and a different way of looking at something.
