I bought a box of old papers at an auction once. In that box, there was an envelope, very full & fat, postmarked sometime during WW2. Inside were 4 sheets of blank paper and folded into them was one more sheet that said, right in the center, “I Love You!”, bright red letters. Maybe written in lipstick.
Her soldier never got the letter.
On the outside of the envelope, in purple ink stamped with a rubber stamp, were the words “Recipient Deceased–Return to Sender”
I wonder what happened to her? And how he died…far from home
