Chapter 1
This is an experiment...let me know if I should put up the next part! Comments/Feedback greatly appreciated!! thx (:

The flyers were up. They had been for three days, and nearly every open space in the halls of the school was filled. Concert, Gym B, Friday!!! - 7p.m.!!!. No matter where you went, you were reminded of the hometown hero rock band, The Zombies, and their concert for the small town of two thousand people. For sixteen year old Kate and her boyfriend Evan, this was the most exciting thing to happen all year. They loved their school's favorite band. But this story isn't about them; it's about their best friend, June. And she absolutely dreaded the Zombies.
June was not your ordinary girl. She wasn't very tall, yet slender, and she had the face of a Hollywood star. She had dyed-black choppy hair and sapphire blue eyes. Her skin was porcelain, her frame nearly perfect, and a killer smile. Yet this sixteen year old beauty never had a boyfriend. Not one, and as far as anyone knew, no guy was interested in filling the position. Apparently, she wasn't "popular". No designer brand clothes. She wore thrift store finds, ripped skinny jeans with safety pins stuck in them and scribbles from permanent markers, and her dirty old Chucks. The boys at Derby High had an attitude about them; they only wanted "pretty" or "preppy" or "popular" girls. And stupid ones. June was extremely smart; no doubt thanks to her parents, a physics professor dad and a scientist mom.
Though June never really put much thought toward dating or boys, it bugged her every time she saw a couple. Especially Kate and Evan, who she saw everyday. She wanted the same kind of happiness that Kate had. Her parents always pressured her to be the best in everything she did, though she didn't have to try. The hardest subjects came naturally to her. A boyfriend wouldn't distract her from school....not too much, at least. June had one crush, on the same boy since the first grade when they met. A tall, athletic boy, shaped from years of soccer. He was also musical. Lead guitarist, songwriter, music writer, and essentially, the backbone of the Derby High's first garage band to actually migrate out of the garage. You really couldn't blame June for loving him; short, choppy black hair, usually in his face, and icy blue eyes. He even had the emo/scene/rocker style, completed with snakebite lip rings. He and June had been the best of friends all through grade school, but drifted apart in Junior High as he gained popularity. They hardly talked anymore except for a "hey" or "sup" in the hallway. Oliver Grant was heaven on Earth, and the plague that followed June Atwood every day.
***** ***** ***** ***** *****
"RRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG!!!"
"Thank God" sighed June as she fled from the Physics II classroom. It took her five minutes to push through the herd of people and down the next hallway. She crammed all of her books in her tiny locker, grabbed her bag, darted outside before Kate or Evan could find her, and started on the road for home.
"This is it," June thought. "One more day, then, I don't have to be sad anymore." She had pretty much made up her mind. What purpose was there for her to live? She couldn't get a boyfriend, she would never be "popular", her parents were always down her throat about school, and the one guy she did like...well, probably forgot she existed. She would go to the concert tomorrow, watch Oliver show off his newly-picked girlfriend, and go home. She'd cry her eyes out, and end it.
As June walked on, deep in thought, she didn't even realize someone calling her name. Then someone tapped on her shoulder, suprising her and sending her off balance. She regained traction on solid ground and looked up to find him.
"Hey..." he laughed, "didn't mean to scare you." Then he smiled at June.
"It's okay, totally my fault. I was spacing." She gave a small grin. Their eyes met for just a second, then he looked away, also dropping her hand that he had been holding while he helped her up.
"Uh...I was just making sure you're coming to the concert tomorrow."
"Well..." June set her balance on the other foot and kicked at an ant crawling on a leaf.
"C'mon. I promise it's gonna be fun!" He smiled again.
"Okay, I'll go." He smiled larger, and gave her a HUGE hug. "Thanks." He said, and upon hearing his friends call him back, he turned and sprinted toward them. June was ecstatic; a hug; from Oliver! Her heart had skipped a beat. But why was he so concerned that she should go to the concert? It couldn't be that......no. That idea was foolish. She had her plan, and nothing would stop her from sticking to it. He probably just wanted to rub it in everyone's faces even more. June walked on in silence, and not thinking about anything in particular. Nothing, except for the swishing and crunching of red, orange, yellow, and brown leaves beneath her feet.
