THE BOY

The night was pitch black outside and the street lamps weren’t working for some odd reason but there was one house where the lights were working, but not correctly. They were going on and off and doing weird stuff. Have you ever had one of those headaches in the back of your mind that would not go away? This was worse. This wasn’t just an ordinary headache; it pounded like drums in the back of my mind. It kept growing louder and louder.

“Argh.” the pain was intense. I didn’t even notice the lights flickering. All of a sudden my parents burst in my room.

“What’s the matter?” my mother exclaimed.

“How many times have I told you to knock?” I bellowed. I was lying in my bed in my pajamas. “Anyways, there’s nothing wrong, except for this terrible headache. It’s like it’s in the back of my head.”

Just then, I heard someone unfamiliar, and it seemed to come from every direction in the darkness.

That’s your power waiting to be released.

“Whose there?” I asked.

“What are you talking about? It’s us Vanne.” a puzzled look danced across my father’s face.

“ No, no. That voice. Didn’t you hear it?”

The voice came again, only this time, I noticed that it didn’t really come from anywhere in the room. It seemed to be coming from inside my own head.

They cannot hear me Vanne, only you. I am communicating with you through thought.

This was too much. There was just no way this could really be happening, I thought. It’s simply impossible.

Oh, it’s possible. And it is happening.

“Oh, he’s probably still half asleep,” my mom said, “lets go back to sleep.”

“Alright,” my dad said, “ the lights seem to be back to normal, for now anyways. I’ll take a look at them in the morning. Good night Vanne.”

I was getting ready to say something, and then I thought I should probably find another way to go about this. “Good night.” I replied as they shut my door. I listened to their footsteps, heading back to their room, and waited for the sound of their door closing. I was puzzled by what was happening. I wanted answers, and I couldn’t very well get them with my parents standing there. Whoever he was, I could already tell that he could hear my thoughts, so I tried to communicate with him, and hoped that he would respond.

Who are you? I asked in thought. What do you want?

I could feel a sort of contact beginning. Success! His mind began to touch mine. He responded.

I am a friend, and I am here to help.

Please forgive me if I don’t completely believe you right away. I replied.

Oh, I would expect as much. But I am here to help you in the events to come.

Yeah? Like what? And you still didn’t tell me your name.

My name is not important right now, but you will find out soon enough. But right now, we need to talk about more important matters.

And they would be?

You are special. More special than you realize. You have a gift that could benefit the world. That feeling in the back of your head has been there for some time now, hasn’t it.

Yeah, and its been getting a lot worse recently. But how do you know about that?

That feeling is your power trying to get used. It’s probably been doing this for a while now, and just keeps growing, because you never realized it was there, and never consciously used it. So it has been trying to use itself whenever it can, but in small doses, and that’s why no one really noticed. And you probably felt a dramatic change in its intensity tonight. That was me trying to reach you.

So now what. I asked. It was all I could think of to reply with. I mean, what else could I say to that. It was just all too much.

In the morning, I shall come to your house to meet with you and your parents. I will tell your parents that we want you at our institute for young people with exceptional gifts and skills. And yes, it is real, but it is still a place for special people such as you and I. I will explain this further after I have met with your parents. But I need you to play along. But the decision on whether or not you go is still up to you.

How do I know that I can trust you?

You don’t. that decision is entirely up to you. We shall talk of this more tomorrow. Just try to get some sleep for now.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to get to sleep after this.

Don’t worry, I can help with that.

I don’t know what happened, but I was out like the lights. When I woke up, I found myself hoping that it was all just a dream. Which is funny, because I had always imagined something like that happening. I got dressed and was about to leave my room when there was a knock on my door.

“Yeah? What is it?” I asked.

“Vanne, hurry up and get dressed and out here, there’s someone who would like to talk to you.” my father replied from the other side. I stepped out to see a man in a suit smiling. He was ordinary looking enough. But then again, so did I, I suppose.

“Hello Vanne, it’s nice to meet you.” he said in a deep and familiar voice. “ I am Professor Jonas Sprigg, but you can call me Jonas, or even John.”

There was no doubt about it. He was the man I talked with last night.

“Hello.” I said. I thought that I should probably play dumb. “Umm, what’s going on?”

“Mr. Sprigg is here to offer you a place in a special institute for the young and gifted.” my dad answered. “See? I told ya that if you work hard that someone would notice and make you an offer.”

“Indeed. But remember, you can just call me John, Mr. Dently. Now, why don’t we all just sit down and discuss this matter. I’m sure that you all would like a little information on this.”

“Oh, of course. Yes, please take a seat.” my mom said politely.

“Can I get you anything John.” I asked.

“No, thank you. I’m fine. Now, where should I begin.

Jonas was able to get my parents to think that someone at the school had noticed the kind of work that I did turn in, and asked if I would like to be recommended to a institute, so I played along and said that I had forgotten. To attend at the “Amber Institute for Gifted Youths”, or A.I.G.Y., I would have to live on the grounds of the institute, which was a couple of cities away from here. I wouldn’t mind that. Parents could come and visit at anytime. I would still attend a regular school, and depending on how things were, I could get help with my school work, and get extra courses at the institute that aren’t offered at many other places. He said that they were training gifted youths for the days ahead. What he didn’t say was how they were training them. Still, it sounded pretty good. I decided to check it out.

“Alright,” John said, “you can give it a one month trial run, and if you don’t like it, you are free to come back here. We will even pay for any of your expenses involving your relocation, and that includes gas.”

“How big are the rooms?” I asked.

He took a look at my room and said, “ Big enough to fit everything in here in it, and then some. We also have people, including students, who would be happy to help with moving anything, and other stuff, like dismantling that bed and putting it in your dorm.”

“Sounds fantastic.” I said cheerfully while we all headed outside. “ But I wouldn’t want to put you guys through too much trouble, after all, you are already offering a lot.”

“Oh, it’s no trouble.” said a voice from what I assumed was John’s blue van, parked in our driveway. “We would be happy to help.”

Stepping out of the van were two strong looking guys, and a girl who was about as short as I was. The two guys were twins, one in a red shirt, the other in a blue one. It was the girl who had spoken, and now she just stood there smiling. They all seemed to be around my age. And they seemed nice enough.

“Well, if you insist, I suppose I wouldn’t mind some help.” I said.

“It looks like we’re going to get to make another friend.” said the blue twin to the red twin.

“It sure does.” replied the red twin. “ Hi there, I’m Brad.”

“And I’m Brett.” said the blue twin.

“And I’m Katherine, but you can call me Kat.”

“My name is Vanne. So are you guys students?”

“Yeah, we’re because we like to help out,“ Kat said and then whispered, “and the extra credit points aren’t bad either.”

I gave a little chuckle. I was starting to like the thought of this place more and more. I just hoped that it didn’t turn out to be a mistake.

“We can get you in the institute within four days.” said John.

“Is that gonna give me enough time to pack?”

“Don’t worry,” said Brett, “ with our help, you’ be ready to go in two days.
I wasn’t doubting this, since I didn’t know what their abilities were. I didn’t even know what my ability was. I decided that I should make a note to ask John about this later.

“What about the school that I’m already in?

“We’ve already taken care of that.” said John. You don’t need to go back to that school unless you want to clear out your locker, or say goodbye to friends, or if you later decide to come back.”

“Cool. I guess I’ll go there today and get my things and say goodbye.” I said as a grin crept across my face. I was excited. I didn’t think that I would be coming back, at least not to the school. I would definitely be coming here to see family and friends every so often. But not to the school. No. I was going to go to a new school, where no one has even heard of me. I was getting that second start I always wanted. I was going to a place where I was wanted. I was going to learn to use my ability, whatever it was. I was going to make a difference. I was going to be somebody, and that felt good.
