The shock of Midori’s vibrating cell phone nearly caused the girl to crash into a wall. Running a hand through her short, green hair, she checks the caller id, her face breaking into a grin. The silver skull and crossbones charm attached to the phone gently slaps her fingers as she flips open the phone saying, “Ani’s Acupuncture, Ani speaking. Try our newly added boil lancing service!” She pauses. “Ah, you were always the only one to call me that. ‘Yotsuba-chan’ was for when I was little; I’ve grown up now.” Another pause, then a laugh. “But I’ll always be two years younger than you! Didn’t you say that that made me cuter so that you’d want to take care of me?” She sits on the curb, adjusting her plaid skirt and tugging lightly on an earring. “Oh, come on. You of all people should know- my mother can’t do everything. It’s getting so bad that I almost went looking for a job today. Oi! What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Midori screams as a car drives by, nearly splashing her with rancid water. “Huh? No, not you, just this random asswipe.” A rude gesture at the departing car, then back to the phone. “Look, babe, can I stop by? I haven’t eaten anything today and I’m in the mood for some shougayaki. Cool. Get the peach coolers. All right, I’ll be there in a half hour.” Tightening her laces, Midori slips the phone into her left boot and stands up, lifting the wallet of the first person to walk by. “Today might not be so bad, after all.”
